WHAT CAN AI DO FOR AGRICULTURE?WHAT CAN AI DO FOR AGRICULTURE?

Farmers are tapping into artificial Intelligence to grow more with fewer
resources, but adoption could be slow.

Ben Potter, Senior editor

Farmers are already benefiting from artificial intelligence in ways they may not
fully realize.

By now, you’re likely aware of the buzz surrounding generative artificial
intelligence. Many consumers have incorporated this technology into their daily
lives — whether that’s creating recipes, using a chatbot for customer assistance
or relying on your smart-phone’s autocorrect function.

But how can farmers specifically tap into AI? And how might it affect their
day-to-day operations moving forward?

Curt Covington, senior director of partner relationships at AgAmerica Lending,
is interested in
these sorts of trends. He expects some potential pushback that is similar to the
adoption of precision ag technology a decade or more ago.

He sees people saying: “It’s too new; it’s too risky.” And he remembers many
saying the same thing about precision ag.

“And here we are today, and most of the Midwest is using precision agriculture,”
Covington notes. “So, as a general rule of thumb, farmers can be slow to adopt
and then quickly able to adapt.”

Covington is convinced that AI is going to allow farmers to grow better crops
with fewer resources. Predictive tools from past experience could reduce labor
costs tremendously, as one example. Algorithms are on the way that will help you
decide on which hybrids to plant, which inputs to use and when to use them.

RIPPLE EFFECT

AI won’t replace a good agronomist, but it could disrupt other areas of the
industry that require frequent points of contact, Covington says.

“The decision-making process, the inspection process, the collateral valuation
process — that is going to be totally dominated by the AI world,” he says. “My
industry is going to be impacted by that benefit."

“On the other hand, AI may be able to define what a problem is, but it’s not
going to be able to take care of the problem for you.”

Like it or not, the proverbial genie is already out of the bottle, he argues.
“Some of the more pressing problems in agriculture can maybe not be solved but
dealt with using AI technology,” he says. “Those who don’t embrace it are going
to get left behind.”

Arkansas farmer Shane Eason asks: Why wait to get started? Over the past year or
so, Eason is increasingly using ChatGPT instead of more traditional search
engines such as Google.

“With Google, it’s going to send you to a website or source that you’ll have to
dig into and research,” he says. “If you prompt ChatGPT correctly, it’s going to
spoon-feed you everything you want to know.”

Eason, who is also a commodities broker, says farmers who are interested in
becoming more savvy marketers could use AI as a learning tool.

Are you overwhelmed about understanding puts, calls and other options basics? AI
can help you start to chip away at those anxieties and better understand those
concepts, Eason says.
