COLONIAL ST. AUGUSTINE

In September 1565, Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Aviles founded St. Augustine, which
evolved into a multicultural hub of Spaniards, criollos, Native Americans,
Africans, and mixed-race individuals. Following Spain’s cession of Florida to
Britain in 1763, the city experienced a population shift as residents left and
new settlers arrived from England, Africa, and Menorca. Spain regained Florida
in 1783 until it became part of the United States in 1821. Explore our digital
portal to learn how archaeological research has enhanced our understanding of
everyday life in colonial St. Augustine.
