By Pete Hegseth’s account, his heavy drinking began after a brush with death
when an RPG ricocheted off his vehicle but didn’t explode while he was serving
in Iraq with an Army infantry unit. When he returned home to a Manhattan
apartment after the deployment ended in 2006, disconnected from the people he
served with while his wife at the time worked long hours, he turned to alcohol,
he said.
