VILLAGE PUB BEGINS A NEW FURROW

We are very happy to be beginning a new furrow at The Old Plough.

After 15 very successful years at The White Horse we have the opportunity to add
another offering for the good folks of Birstall and our customers from further
afield.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SERVING YOU!

We plan to offer you a ‘village pub’ which will be very different to what we do
at the White Horse, it will however have our signature of friendliness,
reliability, quality, cleanliness and our Birstall community focus.

You will find a new atmosphere at The Old Plough, smiley  faces, a great
selection of drinks and some quality bar fodder. We have opened with a
much-changed pub with new carpets, furnishings, and a fresh coat of paint.






DRINKS AT THE OLD PLOUGH

The drinks come first at The Old Plough, immediately as you walk in, there’s a
bank of traditional hand pull real ales and that is how we want to set the tone.
The drinks offering is a well thought through selection of beers, lagers, and
ciders, different from the White Horse to tempt you,  with an entry price lager,
bitter and spirit selection. There’ll be a good range of Rose, White and Red
wines all by the glass or bottle too.

The Old Plough will have traditional bar food fayre with a selection of crusty
cobs, doorstep sandwiches, Ploughman’s platters, and scotch eggs on offer to
compliment your drinks.





ENTERTAINMENT



We offer our customers great drinks and lots of reasons to venture out, whether
it’s for a daytime drink at a bottomless brunch, or for dancing at a disco
afternoon, there is live Sky sports on the TV screens.



We’ve got live music lined up monthly on the first Saturday of the Month (& Bank
Holidays) until March 2025! check out our socials for more information.

It’s only 150 paces (yes we’ve counted them!) between The White Horse and The
Old Plough so why not make a night of it? Have a meal at the Horse then pop up
to the Plough for a night cap or catch a band at the Plough and meet up with a
friend first at the Horse? The choice is yours!

We will hold our own Birstall Beer Festival, Octoberfest, in October!


We have darts boards, lots of playing cards and traditional pub games available.



Watermead Park is only a short distance away so why not pop in for some
refreshment after a walk, we are dog friendly too.

The pub will be available for parties, wakes, and other private events, please
just ask a member of our team.

A RICH HISTORY

The White Horse and The Old Plough share some common history, did you know…

The Old Plough (Inn) is the oldest public house in Birstall and until 1811
brewed its own ales.  It was these ales that were taken down the lane to provide
refreshment for the labourers who were building the canal, and this outpost then
became The White Horse.


BOTH THE WHITE HORSE AND THE OLD PLOUGH WERE OWNED BY THE STRETON DERBY ALES
COMPANY, AND BOTH WERE REBUILT IN 1929.


The Old Plough was originally a picturesque, thatched building which had an
ancient outbuilding which served as the village mortuary when bodies were
recovered from the nearby canal.

In 1955 The Old Plough boasted Leicester’s most original cocktail bar when Ex
Sailor Bernard Fawkes was landlord.
