Behind many of the challenges facing us today is a failure of leadership. This
is not a new problem. Yearning for wise guidance and effective authority is a
perennial human longing. We need leaders who are credible, competent and
committed. But many leaders seem to be caught up, even consumed, with their own
power and agendas. Some see the leadership crisis as an intellectual problem,
believing we lack a clear theory of leadership. Others view the breakdown of
leadership as a result of increasing deficiency in moral character.
Most leadership books today revolve around the concepts of motivation,
inspiration, empowerment, and teamwork. Helpful as these themes might be, they
miss something more fundamental. Leadership needs a theological foundation, that
will be useful for shaping the undergirding principles, and evaluating current
leadership theories and practices. We need to view leadership from the vantage
point of God.
In Rooted Leadership, John E. Johnson explores how Christian theology provides
an overarching leadership framework and applies that theory to leadership
practices. Spiritual reflection, guided by scripture, points us to the very
center of leadership--God--and the purpose of leadership--that we might display
his glory. All the best forms of leading take their cues from who God is, his
purposes, and his ways of working with people that he has progressively
revealed.
Building on three decades of research, study, and experience as a global leader,
Johnson surveys the landscape of contemporary leadership theory, unpacks the
assumptions and beliefs that underly current trends, and responds by offering a
robust approach to leadership, founded on the character, work, and words of God.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
John Johnson is associate professor of pastoral theology at Western Seminary in
Portland, Oregon. Previously, he served as lead pastor at Village Church in
Portland. He has over three decades of experience leading churches in the United
States and the Netherlands, and has worked with leaders in Europe, Asia, Africa,
and the Middle East. He has a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Dallas
Theological Seminary.
John is the author of Life Under an Open Heaven as well as Missing Voices:
Learning to Lead Beyond Our Horizons and has written journal articles for
Bibliotheca Sacra, Trinity Journal, Resonance, and Didaktikos. He writes a
weekly blog (drjohnejohnson.org).

As one who has been a practitioner and trainer of leadership most of my life I
found "Rooted in Leadership" refreshing - really refreshing!
Today when more and more people are asking, "where have the leaders gone or do
we even need leaders? To read and understand the theology of leadership and that
at its core, leaders are required to join God in carrying out his will - his
way.
John is a master at developing for us the footings, the underpinning of the
leadership principles and practices we know all too well. For example, Leaders
cast vision, leaders know that and do that. However, did you realize that is a
theological mandate?

John has taught me so very much about leadership by serving as a living example
of the principles outlined in this book. He masterfully blends the best of
secular theory and biblical concepts to create a balanced approach to leadership
that is life-giving and deeply rooted. I highly recommend this read to both
seasoned vets and individuals new to the leadership arena.

In my experience, few Christian "leaders" actually understand what leadership
really is. While there is a plethora of Christian writing on leadership, few of
them truly understand its true meaning. As is evident from the bibliography.,
Dr. Johnson has done his homework in this regard. And then to root the entire
matter in a theological context makes this work, in my opinion, a classic and
foundational book.

Whether you are a young MBA, seasoned manager or seminary student, what you
understand about leadership is going to affect how you lead or help others to
lead. Dr Johnson scours the record on leadership, takes a fresh approach from
how God might look at it and packages it in a readable book for academics and
others to learn. Couple that with Johnson’s years as a Pastor leading industry
executives, and this becomes a tour de force on Leadership.

Good book. I have not really read book like it before. It does not offer a bunch
of "how-to's", but instead takes you through what God has to say on leadership.
As you read these chapters, the "how-to's" come as you see more and more
leadership fleshed out in the Scripture. As someone who is a Christian and a
leader--I have intuitively believed that the Bible has the best things to say
about leadership...Rooted leadership communicates those truth's in a clear and
exciting way!

This is a great book on leadership! Dr Johnson does an admirable job of pulling
together examples of good and bad leadership as well as relevant quotes. Even
though he writes from a Christian perspective, which is admirable, the book is
flat out just an excellent book on leadership which should be read and re-read
by all who have any interest in leadership.

John finished your book a couple days ago. Your level of knowledge of leadership
literature is quite impressive! You obviously know what you are taking about
from the academic perspective. I think you did a good job of merging it with
your ministry experiences. I can see the book being a text in many ministry
classes in evangelical seminaries. Overall – good book, very impressed.
