MANIQUEER MANIQUEER MANIQUEER MANIQUEER Welcome to the celebration of my dream nail salon, a performative gathering for racialized queer and trans folks to come rest and find joy in the presence of one another. Blessed with a special guest performance by the iconic @yrstrlyae. The performance centres on the subjectivities and gathering of queer bodies in spaces, opening up to other bodies, as a way of resistance and claiming back public spaces. Date & Time: 18:30 - 19:15 Place: The Finnish Museum of Photography, 0th floor Cable Factory, Kaapeliaukio 3, staircase G, Helsinki (See accessibility here) ༺ Free entrance ༻ To participate, Do you identify as part of the QTBIPOC* communities? YES NO *QTBIPOC - an acronym for Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, is used to encompass folks in the LGBTQ+ community who exist at the intersection of racism, ethnocentrism, xenophobia, queerphobia, and transphobia. Some people might not resonate with the term as we recognize the distinct and socially situated experience of each other while many of us occupy the space in between categorizations. For the lack of a commonly understood word or phrase that speaks to the vast and diverse group of people, I have adopted the term QTBIPOC here to establish solidarity and bridge connections with other racilized queer and trans folks, showing the plurality and subjectivity of our experience by having each of us speak for ourselves, and not to reduce ourselves in order to be recognized. *ੈ✩‧₊˚༺ ༻*ੈ✩‧₊˚ ABOUT THE PROJECT As a reply to the lack of spaces for racialized queer and trans people, ManiQueer, meaning “queer hands”, conceptualizes a resistance of radical softness through queer pleasures, gender and sexuality exploration in shiny nail polishes, claiming of public spaces for communal sanctuary. By appropriating the inherently gendered nail salon practice, a home-making notion that is specific to the Vietnamese diaspora, I speculate on a trajectory where I follow my aunt’s footstep to make a home for myself and imagine a nail salon as a communal space that opens door for the people who I care for.
