St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church belongs to the Serbian Diocese of Eastern
America, governed by His Grace Bishop IRINEJ. Our parish community was founded
in 1904 in Wilmerding, PA, but moved to Monroeville in 1971. Our original Church
building was sanctified by St. Tikhon, the former patriarch of Russia, which is
a great blessing that’s been following our Church since the moment of its
dedication. The altar table blessed by him now resides in our Monroeville
church.

Our services are mostly in English, but contain a few parts in Church Slavonic
to celebrate the rich musical and liturgical traditions of our community’s
Serbian heritage. Though the parish is “Serbian Orthodox,” we are Orthodox first
and Serbs second. Everyone is welcome to our parish, regardless of their
cultural or national background! Join us in our worship of Our Lord and God and
Savior Jesus Christ!

 * Saturday Vespers and Confession 6:00 p.m.
 * Sunday/Saturday Divine Liturgies 10:00 a.m.
   
   Notice: June-August, these are at 9:00a.m.

 * Weekday Liturgies (Mon-Fri) 8:00 a.m.

 * Sunday School After Communion

FAQS ON ORTHODOXY

What does the word "Orthodox" - in addition to being Christian - mean?

The word Orthodox comes from two Greek words: Orthos and doxia, which together
mean the right opinion and belief. Stating that we are Orthodox Christians, we
believe we are Christians of right belief.

Do you have sacraments?

Yes. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, we believe in the sacraments of baptism,
chrismation, repentance, unction (anointing of the sick), wedding, ordination,
and the eucharist.

Do you worship the Virgin Mary?

No! In the Eastern Orthodox Church, the Virgin Mary is held in high regard and
as the greatest human being after the God-Man Christ. However, the word
‘worship’ means to revere as God. Since Mary is not God, we do not worship her,
but we pray to her and ask for her intercessory prayers.

Do you believe that there are deadly sins?

We believe that every sin brings spiritual death but we also believe that every
sin can be forgiven if the one who is asking for forgiveness truly repents.

How do I become Orthodox?

You become Orthodox by going through a period of learning with your priest. This
learning includes some basic doctrinal introduction to faith as well as
practical aspects. When your priest decides that you are ready, you are
officially chrismated and accepted into the Orthodox Church.
