Homeland Security Investigations responded to a call from San Antonio police
after officers say 80 to 100 people escaped from the back of an 18-wheeler when
an officer arrived to investigate the suspicious big rig at a far East Side
truck stop.

Lt. Jesse Salame, with SAPD, said police received a call for the suspicious
18-wheeler that was eastbound on I-10 East around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

When a Park Police officer responded to the call at a truck stop near I-10 and
Foster Road, he went to confront the truck driver when a group of people bailed
out of the back of the 18-wheeler, Salame said.

Police estimate about 80 to 100 people — a mix of men and women — were in the
trailer, but officials are still investigating to get an accurate count.
Twenty-nine people made contact with San Antonio police and fire crews,
according to Salame.

Only one person was taken to the hospital out of precaution due to dehydration,
according to Joe Arrington, public information officer of the San Antonio Fire
Department. The other 28 were healthy and taken on VIA buses, Salame said. It’s
unclear where the buses were headed, and police directed further questions about
the transportation of those individuals to HSI.

A meeting between Bill and Melinda Gates and convicted sex offender Jeffrey
Epstein in 2013 left Melinda upset at the relationship between her husband and
the financier, as reported by The Daily Beast on Thursday.

Sources told the outlet that her soon-to-be ex-husband’s friendship with Epstein
— who had already pleaded guilty to soliciting an underage girl in 2008 when the
two struck up a relationship in 2011 —”still haunts” Melinda, according to The
Beast.

According to the outlet, the couple met with Epstein in New York City at his
Upper East Side mansion in September 2013. Sources told The Beast that soon
after the meeting, Melinda told friends of her discomfort during the encounter.
Several people close to the couple told The Beast she was “furious” over her
husband’s relationship with Epstein.

Gates’ ties to Epstein were first reported by The New York Times in late 2019
following Epstein’s death by suicide in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in
New York, where he was being held pre-trial. Epstein had been charged with
multiple counts related to sex trafficking underage women in July of 2019.

Gates was among many several high-profile figures who faced backlash over ties
to Epstein following the sex offender’s July 2019 arrest, but among the
billionaires, politicians, and royals who parlayed with Epstein, Gates was rare
in that he began his relationship with the financier after Epstein had already
been convicted of sex crimes, according to The Times. 

The Times reported that Gates and Epstein met multiple times from 2011 to 2013.
In 2013, Gates rode on Epstein’s private jet from New Jersey to Palm Beach,
Florida, according to the outlet, though Gates had previously denied he’d ever
traveled with Epstein in a 2019 interview with The Wall Street Journal. 

“I didn’t have any business relationship or friendship with him,” Gates told The
Journal. “I didn’t go to New Mexico or Florida or Palm Beach or any of that.
There were people around him who were saying, hey, if you want to raise money
for global health and get more philanthropy, he knows a lot of rich people.
Every meeting where I was with him were meetings with men. I was never at any
parties or anything like that. He never donated any money to anything that I
know about.”

The two men’s relationship appeared to cool in the fall of 2014, according to
The Beast, following a $2 million donation to MIT’s Media Lab by Gates that the
lab’s former director claimed was facilitated by Epstein. (A spokesperson for
Gates denied this claim to The Journal: “Although Epstein pursued Bill Gates
aggressively, any account of a business partnership or personal relationship
between the two is simply not true. And any claim that Epstein directed any
programmatic or personal grantmaking for Bill Gates is completely false.”)

According to The Times, Epstein had soon after complained to an acquaintance
that Gates had stopped speaking to him. 

This week, Bill and Melinda announced they were separating after 27 years of
marriage.

“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have
made the decision to end our marriage,” the two said in a statement on Twitter
on Monday. “We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that
works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive
lives.”

But the couple had reportedly already separated prior to the announcement, and
divorce filings shared by TMZ, revealed Melinda said the marriage was
“irretrievably broken.”

The Beast reported Thursday that financial and public relations specialists had
been working on specifics of the duo’s split “for weeks,” before the
announcement. 

Gates and Melinda married in 1994 and have three children together. They also
set up the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation together. 

A representative for the couple did not immediately respond to Insider’s request
for comment.

An attorney for an accused Capitol rioter claimed his client had been
radicalized by Fox News, saying he had “Foxitus” and “Foxmania.”

Anthony Antonio watched Fox News for six months prior to the Capitol riot, the
attorney said during a multi-defendant hearing on Thursday related to the
Capitol siege.

The attorney said his client started “believing what was being fed to him” by
the news outlet and former President Donald Trump, HuffPost’s Ryan Reilly and
The Daily Beast reported.

Antonio, who was wearing a black tactical bulletproof vest with a “Three
Percenter” patch when pro-Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, was
included in a “Seeking Information” list posted by the FBI following the
incident, according to court documents.

Federal investigators interviewed Antonio on February 4, and he admitted to
being at the Capitol on January 6. However, he did not answer when investigators
asked if he entered the building. Court documents allege that Antonio entered
the Capitol through one of the broken windows.

“Although his face was not visible, he was identifiable by the tattoo on his
wrist and the distinctive black gloves with white writing,” according to the
document. A video also captured Antonio inside the building “picking up a piece
of furniture, which appeared to have a broken leg, with another individual and
tossing the furniture
off to the side,” the documents said.

In the February 4 interview with investigators, Antonio described his account of
what happened when protestors confronted police officers outside the building,
saying he saw “death” in the eyes of one officer who he said was asking for
help.

Metropolitan Police Officer Mike Fanone was tased by accused rioter Danny “DJ
Rodrguez,” who has been charged in relation to the incident. Video footage
showed Antonio near Rodriguez at the time of the incident, who was holding a
stun gun, HuffPost reported.

A criminal complaint was filed against Antonio on April 14, charging him with
unlawfully entering restricted building or grounds, violent entry and disorderly
conduct, obstruction of law enforcement, obstruction of an official proceeding,
and destruction of government property.

A representative for Fox News did not immediately return Insider’s request for
comment.

Janeiro on Thursday and at least one officer and two dozen others died after
being shot, authorities said. 

The civil police’s press office confirmed the death of the cop and 24 alleged
“criminals” in a message to the Associated Press. 

A police helicopter flew low over the Jacarezinho favela as heavily armed men
fled police by leaping from roof to roof, according to images shown on local
television.

One woman told The Associated Press she saw police kill a badly wounded man she
described as helpless and unarmed who they found after he had fled into her
house.

Felipe Curi, a detective in Rio’s civil police, denied there had been any
executions. “There were no suspects killed. They were all traffickers or
criminals who tried to take the lives of our police officers and there was no
other alternative,” he said during a press conference.

Police had to struggle to enter the favela because of concrete barriers built by
the criminals, according to the detective. Shooting spread throughout the
community. During the operation, several people Curi described as criminals
invaded neighboring houses trying to hide. Six were arrested, he said. 

The police also seized 16 pistols, six rifles, a submachine gun, 12 grenades and
a shotgun.

Service on a subway line was temporarily suspended “due to intense shooting in
the region,” according to a statement from the company that operates it.
Earlier, two subway passengers were injured when a stray bullet shattered the
glass of one car.

BRAZILIAN PRESIDENT JAIR BOLSONARO SUGGESTS CORONAVIRUS MADE IN LAB TO WAGE
‘BIOLOGICAL WARFARE’: REPORTS

Jacarezinho, one of the city’s most populous favelas, with some 40,000
residents, is dominated by the Comando Vermelho, one of Brazil’s leading
criminal organizations. The police consider Jacarezinho to be one of the group’s
headquarters.

Thursday’s operation was aimed at investigating the recruitment of teenagers to
hijack trains and commit other crimes, police said in a statement.

A group of about 50 residents in Jacarezinho poured into a narrow street on
Thursday afternoon to follow members of the state legislature’s human rights
commission as it conducted an inspection. They shouted “justice” while clapping
their hands and some raised their right fists into the air.

Human Rights Watch Brazil said in a statement that the public prosecutor must
immediately investigate possible police abuses.

The police statement said the criminal gang has a “warlike structure of soldiers
equipped with rifles, grenades, bulletproof vests, pistols, camouflaged clothing
and other military accessories.”

The Candido Mendes University’s Public Safety Observatory said that at least 12
police operations in Rio state this year have resulted in three or more deaths.

BRAZIL BANS RUSSIA’S SPUTNIK V COVID-19 VACCINE DUE TO CARRYING LIVE COLD VIRUS:
REPORT

Observatory director Silvia Ramos said Thursday’s raid was among the deadliest
in the city’s recent history.

Many of them appear to violate a ruling by Brazil’s Supreme Court last year that
ordered the police to suspend operations during the pandemic, restricting them
to “absolutely exceptional” situations.

The Supreme Court declined to comment when asked by The Associated Press if
Thursday’s operation would qualify.

The man suspected of stabbing two Asian American women on a San Francisco
sidewalk was reportedly released early from a 25-year prison sentence due to a
left-wing criminal justice diversion program.

Years before allegedly stabbing two elderly woman at a Tenderloin bus stop,
Patrick Thompson, now 54, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon in 2017
and sent to a mental institution, according to the San Francisco Chronicle – but
he was granted entry into a mental health diversion program in 2019,
“successfully” completing it in August 2020.

A spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
deferred questions to San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin, noting the
CDCR is not responsible for sentencing decisions.

Boudin’s office did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment. He
was elected in November 2019, and it was not immediately clear how much of a
role, if any, he played in Thompson’s release.

On Twitter, where his handle currently includes Chinese characters that
approximate the pronunciation of his name in solidarity with Asian Americans and
Pacific Islanders, who are facing a nationwide rise in hate crimes, he said he
met with the victims and their families earlier Thursday before he announced the
charges against Thompson.

Graphic video shows the man, who police allege is Thompson, walking up behind
two elderly women as they stood at a bus stop near the city’s Tenderloin
Station, a thriving commercial district, in broad daylight Tuesday.

He pulls out a knife and slashes them both before bystanders rush over and he
eventually flees.

The victims, 84 and 63 years old, and suffered multiple stab wounds and remained
hospitalized as of Wednesday.

Thompson faces two counts each of attempted murder and elder abuse charges. 

San Francisco police said Wednesday they were looking into whether racial bias
was a motive in the attacks as anti-Asian hate crimes spike around the country.

In late March, horrific video showed an Asian woman being punched, robbed, and
then dragged by a vehicle in a San Francisco neighborhood in broad daylight. A
national Asian American advocacy group, Asian Industry B2B, called on the Biden
administration last month to take action to address the spike.

Boudin, whose own parents were convicted on felony murder charges in connection
with the deadly 1981 Brinks’ heist, had lobbied New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to
grant his father, David Gilbert, clemency earlier this year.

His mother, Kathy Boudin, was paroled in 2003.

Gilbert, the unarmed getaway driver, is still serving a 75-years-to-life
sentence for his role in the robbery, which left two Nyack police officers,
Edward O’Grady and Waverly Brown, and a Brinks security guard, Peter Paige,
dead.

Before the robbery, Boudin’s parents dropped their then-14-month-old son off
with Weather Underground leaders Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.

As an adult, he used his upbringing with incarcerated parents as a campaign
talking point and called for criminal justice reforms.

But in January, he was forced to defend his office’s actions after a parolee
allegedly ran a red light on New Year’s Eve in a stolen car in an incident that
left two pedestrians dead.

Then in March, he drew backlash in another case involving an unprovoked attack
on an Asian American. In that case, he caused an uproar when he referenced a
19-year-old suspect’s “temper tantrum” in the killing of an 84-year-old Thai
immigrant, but not racial animus.

Mr. Biden’s nominee to lead the Civil Rights Division, Kristen Clarke, had a

March, after the Georgia law had been signed by Gov. Brian Kemp, that the

White House official said that the president, in his comments, had been assuming
the issue was one the department would review.

Democrats argued on Thursday that the Republican crackdowns on voting in Florida
and Texas had made it more urgent for the Senate to pass the For the People Act,
which would radically reshape the way elections are run, make far-reaching
changes to campaign finance laws and redistricting and mitigate the new state
laws.

“We are witnessing a concerted effort across this country to spread voter
suppression,” Jena Griswald, the Colorado secretary of state, said Thursday on a
call with progressive groups in which the new Florida law was condemned. “The
For the People Act levels the playing field and provides clear guidance, a floor
of what is expected throughout the nation.”

The scene in Austin on Thursday was tense, as Republicans in the House decided
to replace the language of a bill that passed the senate, known as SB 7, with
the language of a House voting bill, known as HB 6. The swap removed some of the
more onerous restrictions that had originally been proposed, like banning
drive-through voting, banning 24-hour voting and adding limitations on voting
machine allocation that could have led to a reduction of polling locations in
densely populated areas.

But the bill before the House included a host of new restrictions. It bans
election officials from proactively mailing out absentee ballot applications or
absentee ballots; sets strict new rules for assisting voters and greatly raises
the punishment for running afoul of those rules; greatly empowers partisan poll
watchers; and makes it much harder to remove a partisan poll watcher for bad
behavior. The expansion of the authority and autonomy of partisan poll watchers
has raised voter intimidation concerns among civil rights groups.

In the debate Thursday evening, Mr. Cain, the sponsor of the House bill, was
unable to cite a single instance of voter fraud in Texas. (The attorney general
found 16 instances of minor voting fraud after 22,000 hours of investigation.)

migrant processing center in Donna, Texas Thursday night, but cameras will not
be allowed inside the facility. 

The visit comes two days after the Biden administration released images under
the caption “DHS Action on the Southwest Border Yields Results,” showing
drastically improved conditions from what the public saw back in March when
images emerged of migrants packed into “pods” amid the surging crisis at the
border.

While the photos appear to highlight a drastic improvement, Texas Democrat Rep.
Henry Cuellar said the images only tell part of the story. According to Cuellar,
the administration is engaged in a “shell game,” and is deceiving the public by
moving migrant children from one tent to the other.

DHS RELEASES IMAGES OF EMPTY BORDER PATROL FACILITY

“All they’re doing is moving kids from one tent to the other tent and saying oh,
they’re out of Border Patrol custody but they’re next door, next door in HHS,”
Cuellar said.

Fox News correspondent William La Jeunesse said that while “it’s true that
the administration has dramatically reduced the amount of time that these
unaccompanied minors are spending in border patrol processing, that does not
mean there are fewer children entering illegally or that are in U.S. Custody.”

Criticism of the administration’s handling of the border crisis was exacerbated
in March by images that showed more than 5,000 children were in Border Patrol
facilities in Donna. According to the new images, that number has now dropped
into the hundreds.

La Jeunesse pointed to drone footage that showed two tents belonging to border
patrol processing. The drone also picked up five additional tents nearby, which
belong to HHS, according to Cuellar.

 “This snapshot will show you the revolving door,” La Jeunesses said. “May 4,
451 unaccompanied children apprehended. The border transferred 376 to HHS, which
then discharged 420 to families and foster care.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday praised the return of congressional
earmarks as a transparent way to support community projects.

“It is for the good of the community and we encourage people to have as much
community support for a project as possible, and so I’m very proud of it,”
Pelosi said Thursday at a San Francisco event celebrating the Golden Gate
National Recreation Area’s Crissy Field.

Pelosi, D-Calif., said Crissy Field benefited from a congressional earmark and
argued that members of Congress, rather than the executive branch, are best
equipped to determine what projects need the most funding in their districts.

She noted the new round of earmarks will have strict transparency rules that
require members of Congress to publicly post their funding requests and certify
that neither they nor their family will benefit financially from the project.
The House Appropriations Committee will also release a full list of the
“community project funding” before the lawmakers consider the bill. 

“You have to show what your project is,” Pelosi said of the new rules. “It’s not
we’ll just slip it in.  … You have to demonstrate that you have no personal
aggrandizement from it and that it is not for private sector advantage.”

Congressional earmarks were banned in 2011 when Republicans took control of the
House during a Tea Party wave as an overall effort to cut down on wasteful
spending and demonstrate fiscal discipline. But after a decade-long retreat,
earmarks are back and Republicans and Democrats alike are requesting them for
the upcoming budget. 

The House Appropriations Committee asked members of Congress to submit their
funding projects by April 30. The proposed projects have been posted online.
 Requests range from $2 million for a pickleball and fitness circuit in Orange,
California to $3 million for a smartphone app to track bus locations in Utah.

INVESTIGATION FINDS

Fox News found that 326 members of the House, including 220 Democrats and 106
Republicans, submitted earmark requests this year for the upcoming 2022 federal
budget. 

In all, the requests totaled $9.6 billion worth of projects, with Republicans
wanting $4.7 billion in earmarks and Democrats requesting earmarks worth $4.94
billion, according to an analysis by openthebooks.com.

Under the new rules House Democrats put in place, earmark spending will be
capped at no more than 1 percent of the federal government’s roughly $1.5
trillion discretionary spending budget. Pelosi called the earmarks a “minor”
percentage of overall spending and an opportunity to meet the needs of
individual communities. 

She didn’t think the return of earmark spending would cost Democrats during the
2022 midterm elections, since Republicans are also requesting individual
projects.

“I don’t think it’ll have an impact on the election,” Pelosi said. “As you see,
it will be bipartisan. Republicans and Democrats in the House and in the Senate
have said that they would be participating in the congressionally designated
allocation of resources.”
