Skip to content Kaz Murphy’s musical journey spans from South Jersey coffee houses to stages shared with legends like Pete Seeger and Allen Ginsberg. His songwriting, which flourished early under folk hero Dave Van Ronk’s mentorship, led to diverse collaborations including Captain Beefheart and two successful Seattle musicals. Now on his fourth solo album, “Ride Out The Storm,” Murphy continues crafting what No Depression magazine called “quintessential Americana,” weaving together mandolin, baritone guitars, and soulful vocals to tell tales of underdogs and redemption. Based in Los Angeles, he tours internationally while his instrumental works feature in television and film. NEW RELEASE Listen & Purchase Here Award-winning Americana songwriter Kaz Murphy’s fourth solo CD, “Ride Out The Storm,” has climbed to #1 on the Roots Music Report True Country Album Chart. Following 2007’s “Home For Misfits,” this collection of originals was produced by Scrappy Jud Newcomb (Slaid Cleaves, Patty Griffin), who was drawn to Murphy’s storytelling and melodies. The album showcases a Tex Mex influence that reflects Murphy’s decade in New Mexico and Austin during the ’70s and early ’80s. Recorded at The Zone in Dripping Springs, Texas, the eleven songs blend gospel, bluegrass, folk, and Country/Western traditions. The live studio sessions, captured on 2″ tape, feature Newcomb’s musical talents alongside drummer Pat Manske (Dixie Chicks, Flatlanders), Jon Notarthomas (guitars, bass, vocals), and backing vocalist Penny Jo Pullus. The warm production highlights Murphy’s distinctive voice and songwriting, with arrangements that pair soaring mandolin against baritone guitars.
