BRIEFING

UK: Labour market statistics published; BBC Sports Personality of the Year award
prizegiving.

France: Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought award ceremony at the European
Parliament in Strasbourg.

ON THIS DAY

In 1903 the first powered flight in a heavier-than-air machine took place at
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Orville and Wilbur Wright made four brief flights in
their Wright Flyer; in 1942 the foreign secretary, Anthony Eden, told the House
of Commons that Germany was carrying out “Hitler’s oft-repeated intention to
exterminate the Jewish people in Europe”; in 1983 an IRA car bomb killed six
people and injured 91 outside Harrods department store in Knightsbridge, central
London; in 1986 Davina Thompson, aged 35, received the world’s first heart, lung
and liver transplant, at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, in a seven-hour
operation. She died on August 13, 1998; in 1999 the British government
officially lifted its ban on selling beef-on-the-bone, which had been in force
since December 15, 1997, as a result of public health fears.

NATURE NOTES

In the cold soil beneath trees, on trunks, twigs and branches, and deep in leaf
litter and brush, millions of next year’s moths and butterflies are spending
winter pupating in protective cocoons, ready to emerge next year: one reason why
it’s so important to try to leave as much of your garden undisturbed until
spring as you can. The puss-moth caterpillar constructs a hard cocoon from
chewed-up wood pulp cemented to the trunks of trees, so well disguised as to be
almost invisible. The blackish-brown, pointed pupa of the poplar hawk-moth can
often be found in quite large numbers in the soil beneath poplars and willows.
Orange-tips create a crescent-shaped chrysalis that hangs from plant stems by
threads of silk. Melissa Harrison
