CITIES-HEALTH


CITIZENS LEADING THE RESEARCH ON URBAN POLLUTION & HEALTH




OUR MISSION

CitieS-Health aimed to put citizens’ concerns at the heart of research agenda on
environmental epidemiology by tackling health issues that concern them.

Citizens along with scientists in five cities in Europe co-designed and
implemented epidemiological studies to explore how their living environment is
affecting their health.

The project co-created an interactive toolkit.eu with customised tools and best
practices for the replication of the studies in other locations by researchers,
individuals and citizen groups.

 * ENVIRONMENT
   HOW POLLUTED IS THE ENVIRONMENT WHERE I LIVE, WORK, TRAIN?
   CITIZENS COLLECT DATA ABOUT THEIR ENVIRONMENT TO MEASURE THE LEVEL OF
   POLLUTION
   
   
 * CITIZEN-LED GOVERNANCE
   I WANT TO MAKE DECISIONS OVER THE RESEARCH PROCESS AND THE FATE OF THE DATA I
   COLLECT
   ETHICAL AND GOVERNANCE ASPECTS ARE KEY CONCERNS IN CITIES-HEALTH. CITIZENS
   ARE ENGAGED NOT AS MERE ASSISTANTS TO RESEARCHERS, BUT MAINLY AS SCIENTISTS
   WHO PLAY A CENTRAL ROLE IN IDENTIFYING RESEARCH PRIORITIES. MOREOVER,
   CITIES-HEALTH PROMOTES DEBATES ABOUT DATA SHARING IN RESEARCH AND PROVIDES
   CITIZENS WITH KNOWLEDGE AND TOOLS TO MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT THE CONDITIONS
   UNDER WHICH THE DATA COLLECTED CAN BE USED AND RE-USED.
   
   
 * HEALTH
   HOW POLLUTION IS AFFECTING MY HEALTH AND THAT OF MY NEIGHBOURS?
   CITIZENS MONITOR THEIR HEALTH PARAMETERS TO KNOW THE EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL
   EXPOSURES IN THEIR HEALTH.
   
   
 * TOOLKIT
   I WANT TO REPLICATE THE STUDY IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD, CITY, UNIVERSITY… WHERE DO
   I START?
   THE CITIES-HEALTH INTERACTIVE TOOLKIT WILL PROVIDE GUIDELINES, TOOLS AND BEST
   PRACTICES TO INSPIRE OTHER PEOPLE TO REPLICATE THE STUDIES. IT CATERS TO
   THREE KEY ACTORS:
    * SCIENTISTS WHO WANT TO ADOPT CITIZEN SCIENCE APPROACHES IN THEIR RESEARCH
      STUDIES
    * NGOS, PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCIES AND NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS WHO WANT TO TACKLE
      HEALTH ISSUES IN THEIR COMMUNITY THROUGH A PARTICIPATORY APPROACH
    * INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT A PARTICULAR ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE AND
      WANT TO UNDERSTAND ITS IMPACT ON THEIR HEALTH.
