Batch processes are notoriously difficult to optimize. They are highly nonlinear
dynamic processes where key variables, such as conversion rates, are not always
available in real time. Besides that, quality can only be determined at the end
of the batch.

These specific process characteristics lead to very different optimization
approaches compared to continuous processes. In this presentation, IPCOS will
provide a broad overview of different methodologies, expected outcomes and
actual examples of how digital solutions can improve operational excellence,
specifically for batch operations:

 * PID Tuning
 * OEE
 * Golden Batch

Urs ZimmerliSite Manager
CABB Chemicals AG
Dr. Thomas SchambergVice President Supply Chain Excellence

Philipp KohnVP Global Operations
Huber Engineered Materials
Alexander PlumHead of Energy Excellence
Covestro AG

While the world population is growing, the availability of natural resources and
raw materials such as oil, natural gas, mineral ores, and water is decreasing.
It is also of importance to significantly reduce CO2 emissions to counteract
further climate change. Energy efficiency is a key resource for economic and
social development, bringing significant benefits to various stakeholders, from
companies developing energy-efficient measures to all members of society. In
addition to cost savings, numerous benefits can be achieved by supporting better
alignment between energy issues and strategic business professionals: e.g.,
improved competitiveness, profitability, quality, etc. Energy efficiency can
therefore be a strategic advantage. However, most companies, especially small
and medium enterprises, face many problems and in some cases rejection when
trying to effectively implement energy efficiency measures.

Considering the energy crisis and global warming, it has become imperative for
industries to focus on higher energy efficiency. It is well known that energy
consumption in the chemical industry is one of the highest of all industrial
sectors. Energy efficiency is a top priority in the chemical industry, and many
companies are turning to novel technology to help them achieve this goal. It can
help chemical companies reduce energy consumption by optimizing their processes
and improving their production methods.

Energy consumption and the energy-efficient production of goods in a supply
chain have so far played only a very minor role. Important tasks in this area
are the creation and verification of energy supply chain models and the analysis
of their effects on production networks. At the same time, supply chain
management and logistics or intralogistics must move closer together and include
aspects of supply processes. Although the optimal structuring of information and
material flows within a production network is central to supply chain
management, integrated supply concepts for media, energy and other means of
production do not exist. The biggest barriers are access to capital and lack of
awareness (especially of lifecycle cost impacts). Looking at the supply chain is
one of the most important ways to overcome these barriers and improve energy
efficiency.

 * How can energy consumption in supply chain management contribute to more
   energy efficient processes?
 * How can we achieve “maximum profit from a minimum of resources” instead of
“maximum profit from a minimum of capital”?
 * Have you implemented or planned technological innovations and long-term
investments that will lead to increased resource/energy efficiency?
 * Do you have plans for a systemic assessment of resource efficiency, e.g., for
optimizing production processes? Or are you already structuring your
manufacturing processes by optimizing maintenance and servicing cycles?
 * How do you deal with energy consumption and energy-efficient closed-loop
production? How does the integration of resources in process chains and
   systems work?
 * Energy Efficiency Regulations and Directive in EU & Germany: support or
inhibition of energy efficiency in supply chains and chemical production?

Climate neutrality 2030 is on the horizon – but how do we now transform, and
develop a circular economy?
Alexander PlumHead of Energy Excellence
Covestro AG

The chemical industry is at a pathway. Geopolitical and economic challenges lie
ahead and rising energy prices and shortages looming. A global CO2 reduction
strategy can go different directions, but always starts in own productions.
Circularity over the value and supply, instead of linear routes, is the driver
of climate neutrality and implicates a highly transformative effort. Since
Covestro is working with an energy management system for 15+ years, the
integration of the Covestro climate neutrality target (2020 to 2030: -60% Scope
1 & 2 GHG emissions and climate neutrality by 2035) in the energy management
system is one major topic after it has been announced in 2022. Heat transition,
access to renewable energy supply and transformation of our production sites to
climate neutrality are in focus of Covestro’s transformation efforts. Alignment
with the strategic climate neutrality target requires programmatic initiatives
as well as the adaptation of integrated management processes to transform around
50 production sites worldwide into climate-neutral operations.

This presentation covers:

 * Operationalization of Climate Neutrality Strategy: How does it work? What are
major experiences? How do I manage my resources?
 * Process component: Innovative process technologies with the potential of
   saving CO2
 * Framework conditions: Carbon reduction strategy and climate neutral growth –
energy must be affordable, and it must be possible to transform the business
   at the same time
 * Regulatory Guardrails: Purchase of renewable energies, ecological obligations
from state aids in EU, and the effects on the economic competitive edge
 * Scope 3 reduction, alternative feedstocks & digitalization: do you rely on a
successful data management? Where is the date coming from? How about the
   competition with open data?

Strengthening Digital Data Chains through collaboration and novel technologies
across the whole process industries
Christoph Attila KunManager Digital Data Chain Consortium | Head of Maintenance
& Inspection, Service
BASF SE

Strengthening Digital Data Chains works best with a collaborative effort from
which all companies and the whole industry can benefit. The exchange of e.g.,
data and technical information is a plus for manufacturers of machines and
products, service providers, plants managers and employees. Processes and
operations can be made more efficient by automation and to a higher degree: the
most important step to the Factory of the Future! To ensure that everything
works smoothly, standards and platforms for the exchange of information between
all partners are required. It is precisely these standards and technologies that
companies and technology suppliers in the process industry have developed
together.

This presentation covers:

 * Which technologies get used in the Digital Data Chain? How do we implement
   efficiently, safely, and quickly?
 * Which standards must be met? How can we exchange data? How can physical
objects be identified? What are we doing with digital manufacturing data?
 * Obsolescence Management: Which technologies are we using in our plants, e.g.,
digital twins? How are we documenting, and which ID´s are we using? How do we
   manage e.g., successor models?
 * Which solutions does the Digital Data Chain Consortium offer regard Lifecycle
Management, Digital Data, Track & Trace and Digital Twins?

A people-centered approach for digital transformation – Digitalization
initiatives have revolutionized the way chemical companies increase the
collaboration between people and systems. Whereas we have been focused on
getting process-relevant data and an overview of all plant states, it takes
people to align the information with strategic priorities. With the right
knowledge, creativity and the ability to respond to unexpected events, people
build the greatest asset of chemical manufacturing plants. Grace recognized the
importance of their shop floor workforce and manages interactive plant
operations with future-proof human-to-human and human-to-machine communication.
In doing so, Grace unlocks the full potential of a people-centered approach for
digital transformation and brings workers and managers into the age of Industry
5.0.

This presentation covers:

 * How digitalization initiatives have proven to drive plant performance
 * Why a people-focused approach is key for successful manufacturing
 * How chemical companies facing new challenges can achieve resilience

Internal development, partnering with suppliers or buying commercial
applications – how to source AI solutions?
Yves-Gorat StommelDeputy Head of Function Evonik Digital
Evonik Industries AG

In the last couple of years, many larger companies have built internal Data
Science know how, with a significant fraction of this capability being deployed
towards internally developing AI solutions. However, building, maintaining, and
operationalizing an expanding portfolio of AI solutions across the enterprise
quickly becomes a significant, if not overwhelming effort. In order to prepare
for a future in which AI solutions are paramount, early and transparent
decision-making on how to source AI solutions becomes more important. Evonik has
developed a process that allows well-informed decision-making on how to source
AI solutions, taking into account criteria around internal and external
resources and know how, application maturity, IP, value, cost, and others.

This session covers:

 * What some of the main differences are between AI applications and classic
software that directly impact the “make or buy” decision
 * Why now is the time to implement a process on “make or buy” for AI
   applications
 * What evaluation criteria can be used for decision-making regarding “make or
   buy” for AI applications
 * What competencies are needed to manage a balanced AI application portfolio in
   the medium term

 * Implementation of a digital twin will require expertise beyond that of the
process modeling : specialists in on-line analytics and sensor technology,
ICT, programming, optimization, statistics and artificial intelligence need
to work together with the industrial production experts (including modelers
but, operators, management, supply chain that will potentially use the IoT
apps). Adding on the employees will increase fixed costs – How will Chemical
Industry solve (or mitigate) that negative equation?
 * Do we need a comprehensive method describing how to perform reliable
technoeconomic analysis of the profitability of the digital mature plants and
   digital twin technology?
 * Digital Twins: The Next Phase of the AI Revolution? Can we create future
digital twins without AI? Augmented reality and Digital twins – Is that the
   way to proceed?
 * Computer models based on digital twins could be very complex and demanding.
   Who will develop that technology?
 * Big data management and Big data analytics – is the future for the Chemical
Industry to rely on IoT service providers like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, GE,
Siemens and so on? (that would be paradigm shift- almost everything else is
in-house assets). Is it a new business model necessary to implement?
 * Again.. If we can push digital maturity in the chemical industry; why don´t
   we?

Supply chain transformation on its way to digitalization
Dr. Thomas SchambergVice President Supply Chain Excellence
Evonik Industries AG

The chemical supply chain has been without notable significance for several
years, if compared to other industries. The chemical industry overall focused on
the manufacturing and production supply chain part. Therefor many foundations
and basics are missing, giving digitalizing of supply chain or Industry 4.0 in
specialty chemicals a huge challenge. What do you need to start first and how to
prioritize a transformation, that also needs to address strong cultural change
in the way of working?

This presentation covers:

 * Comprehensive supply chain transformation
 * How to deal with the remaining lack of visibility and understanding of the
chemical supply chain in the industry overall
 * Why fancy digital apps alone don´t help with your supply chain transformation
(AI in forecasting is great, but you need a forecast first)

How clean is your Supply and Value chain? The rising relevance of 3rd party
customer and vendor compliance screenings in the global chemical Value Chain
Guy ThompsonHead of Global Credit Risk
Sun Chemical

Why are 3rd party screening becoming more relevant and more people are aware of
them? Whereas in previous years companies just were in the position to say that
they went into a collaboration with e.g., a bad supplier (drug trafficking,
false labor,…), this is not as easy nowadays. A supply or value chain, in
particular the chemical supply chain, doesn´t need to be 100% clean, but it must

Philipp KohnVP Global Operations
Huber Engineered Materials | Martinswerk GmbH
Dr. Thomas SchambergVice President Supply Chain Excellence
Evonik Industries AG
Urs ZimmerliSite Manager
CABB Chemicals AG

Connecting the Evolution on the Shopfloor with the Evolution of the People
Pasquale Di SarnoPlant Director
Barilla Group

Digitalization is revolutionizing production in many ways by enabling new
possibilities and shaking existing processes in their core.

Hand in hand with the evolution of processes on the shopfloor goes the emergence
of new ways of working. While digitalization makes many processes for workers
safer and easier, it also requires new skills from the people on the shopfloor.

Pasquale Di Sarno, Plant Director at the Barilla Group, shows in his
presentation how the company is tackling the digitalization of their
manufacturing processes while not loosing sight of the most important factor in
manufacturing – the people.

AI - from a feasibility study to a sustainable solution in production
Petra HildebrandtManager Test Systems Technology & Platforms
Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co KG

In recent months, Sennheiser has focused on optimizing its existing AI models
and services. The monitoring of the AI models has been significantly expanded
and a good method has been found to detect whether an AI model is still
performing correctly or whether it needs to be retrained. The re-training is
partly automated, the triggering is still manual. The training will be further
automated, as this is the only way to create a sustainable solution. The
presentation will deal with how a sustainable solution for manufacturing was
developed from a feasibility study and what is important in the process.

 * How to measure AI performance
 * Monitoring of AI implementations
 * Creating a sustainable AI solution in production

Reducing Cost and Carbon Footprint with Industrial AI
Dr. Benedikt HofmannCTO Innovation & Technology, CEO Voith Robotics
J. M. Voith SE & Co. KG

Voith developed a proprietary AI Algorithm to reduce costs and carbon footprint
in industrial processes:

 * Predict quality parameters and optimize production setup / cost and resources
 * Identify maintenance needs early on
 * Predict and protect production interruptions and break events

The AI builds an automated digital twin of the entire production/system
including the dependencies (based on an AI-generated stochastic differential
equation system). This allows predictions and definition of measures.

WHAT IS A WORLD CAFÉ?

World Café session are designed to help you discuss with colleagues and peers
similar issues and challenges that everyone is facing in the industry.

Not only will the conversation be moderated by an expert speaker, the aim of the
session is to find real solutions to real world problems with the 4 rounds of
this session. Share you knowledge during the World Café session and deepen your
networking experience!

HOW IS IT ORGANISED?

Based on the theory of the power of collective knowledge, participants are
brought together to share challenges and jointly gain new perspectives and
develop solutions. A medium sized group of participants are allocated to the
offered 4 World Café session tables. The host (moderator, possibly with
co-moderator) of each round table welcomes the guests and briefly introduces
controversies, challenging or project related questions.

After 45 minutes (round 1&2)/30 minutes (round 3&4), participants move to the
next table based on the assigned order on their name badge to enter into a new
discussion. At the beginning of each new World Café round, the moderator gives a
short conclusion of previously discussed aspects and questions emerged. This
offers the opportunity to build up on the discussion continuously. Be part of
several thematic conversation rounds with changing topics and team
constellations – Join our unique World Cafe Sessions!

Requirement for modern corporate governance in securing the future viability
Harald KirschHead of Automation and Industrial IT
ALD Vacuum Technologies GmbH

With regard to their future viability, companies should aim to use innovative
technologies holistically, for example, to ensure the principles of sustainable
production or circular economy. In view of profound technical, economic and
social changes, the manufacturing industry must question the organizational
structure, project characteristics as well as its current portfolio of products,
services and adapt its business models. To do this, it should continue and
accelerate the transformation process that may already have begun. Topics are
the expansion of the technological basis, the expansion of competence and
awareness in dealing with sustainable or circular business. It is therefore no
longer a question of if – it is more a question of how- by identifying the right
approach, taking into account the maturity of my organizational structures.

In the age of advancing digitization and hyper-automation, many transformation
projects still suffer from the fact that, as an example, the physical
integration of production modules takes place much faster than the “logical”
automation technology adaptation or complete integration into continuously
networked, sometimes spatially distributed constructs of production capacities
and the associated planning and control systems. Efforts in which the production
resources work autonomously, knowledge-based, “intelligently” and can control or
configure themselves situationally and exchange information with each other are
made more difficult.

In the planned World Café we want to discuss lessons learned in the circle of
involved and curious discussion partners and provide food for thought in the
safer handling of the matter.

 * How to identify the maturity of the socio-technological environment?
 * How to manage the risk of implementing future oriented organization /
   technological fundament
 * What are the requirement for modern corporate governance
 * Which strategy is the right one: Following an incremental approach or rather
   a radical one?
 * Speed and structure. What is the level of maturity?
 * Which stumbling blocks have you already encountered?

Building new networks for data exchange - New ecosystems and value chains in the
automotive industry and manufacturing sectors
Johannes DiemerR&D Coordinator
ARENA2036

The current transformation of the manufacturing and automotive industries is
additionally massively influenced by geopolitical disputes, pandemics and
climate change. Material flows must therefore be traceable throughout the entire
value chain. This is a challenge that no company can solve on its own today. To
do so, it is necessary to enable the digital flow of information across entire
supply chains. But many suppliers in the manufacturing and automotive industries
are extremely uncertain about the added value of sharing their data. This is
where open data ecosystems come in. A trusted architecture for these ecosystems
is provided by Gaia-X, the project that introduced the idea of data sovereignty,
security and interoperability for decentralized systems. The presentation will
explain the concept of the architecture and the ecosystems of Catena-X the
network for date exchange.
