BASICS AND THEORY OF OPERATION

THE WHEATSTONE BRIDGE CIRCUIT

Dear reader,

Strain gauges convert the applied strain into a proportional change in
resistance. To measure even the smallest change in resistance with a high degree
of accuracy, a Wheatstone bridge circuit is the most convenient way.

In this article, we will introduce the basics and theory of operation and take a
look at the dependence of the geometrical position of the strain gauges, the
type of bridge circuit used, and the resulting bridge factor.

New Nitril Rubber Covering Agent

NG120: OIL-RESISTANT COVERING MATERIAL

The quality of a measurement made with a strain gauge essentially depends on the
type of installation and the design of the measuring point.

NG120 nitrile rubber is a brown, single component covering material in a tube,
designed to protect strain gauge installations from environmental influences.
The solvent adhesive is oil, fuel and plasticizer resistant and cures in contact
with air at room temperature − available for delivery shortly (can be
pre-ordered now).

Selection Guide

SELECT THE RIGHT COVERING MATERIAL

After installing a strain gauge on a component, the measuring point on the
surface of the component must be carefully protected from environmental
influences by a covering material. Find out how to select the right covering
material for your strain gauge installation in our selection guide.

STRAIN GAUGE MEASUREMENTS BEYOND THE BENDING BEAM

Standard strain gauge training often starts by applying strain gauges to a
semi-rigid bending beam. While this is ideal for demonstrating and visualizing
strain combined with a load attached to the bending beam, it varies a lot from
your individual application.

This paper, originally given at the Western Regional Strain Gauge Committee in
October 2021, showcases some of the more unique and challenging strain gauge
projects that have been undertaken by the authors.

Results as a service

MEASUREMENT OF RESIDUAL STRESS

Residual and mechanical stress play a role in the strength of a structure,
although residual stress is harder to predict. A reliable method of measuring
residual stress with minimal damage to the surface is essential. For accurate
results, let our service technicians perform the residual stress test on-site.

STRUCTURAL TESTING SEMINARS

Strain gauge measurements are very often used to monitor structures. The quality
of such a measurement essentially depends on the quality of the installation. In
the seminar 'Installation of Strain Gauges' you will learn how to install strain
gauges even in difficult conditions.

To evaluate your measurement data, our DAQ software catman is ready to help you.
Learn the basics of operation and special functions for monitoring in our
seminar 'Working with catman'.

Would you like to learn everything at once? Ask for our individual seminar on
