LATEST NEWS Nobel Prize in Physics for Geoffrey Hinton : CAIAC is happy to congratulate Geoffrey Hinton for being the co-winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024, together with John Hopfield. Among many other recognition, Geoffrey Hinton is the ACM 2018 Turing award, a CAIAC Fellow and has received the 2018 CAIAC Lifetime Achievement Award. He is known for numerous pioneering works in artificial intelligence and in particular machine learning, such as for instance the backpropagation algorithm which is the basis of the training of artificial neural networks and the development of the AlexNet architecture in computer vision. Geoffrey Hinton is sometimes called « the Godfather of AI, together with Yoshua Bengio and Yann Le Cun for their seminal work on deep learning that has led to many breakthroughs in machine learning. Originally born in Britain, he moved to Canada and has been working at the University of Toronto since 1987, before also joining Google from 2013 to 2023 at which time he left the company to « freely speak out about the risks of A.I. ». Besides his scientific works, Geoffrey Hinton is also very vocal in warning about the potential risks for society linked to an uncontrolled development of artificial intelligence and has been pushing for the creation of regulations and standards to supervise its development for the good of society.
