On Saturday afternoon France's foreign ministry said that according to its
information Nasrallah was indeed dead.

"According to the information we have, Hassan Nasrallah, secretary general of
Hezbollah, would indeed have died," the French foreign ministry said in a
statement.

The ministry said it was working to prevent any escalation.

"The security and protection of civilians must be guaranteed, including that of
French people in the region, which is also our priority," it added.

France's foreign ministry said it was in contact with its regional and Lebanese
partners to avoid escalation.

France and the United States were working this week on the sidelines of United
Nations General Assembly and Security Council meetings to hammer out a 21-day
temporary ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel to allow time for broader

pressure Israel to accept a plan for the 21-day ceasefire.

LEBANON ASKS IRANIAN PLANE NOT TO LAND

13:04 CEST

Lebanon's transport and public works ministry asked an Iranian plane not to
enter Lebanese airspace after Israel warned on Friday air traffic control at the
Beirut airport that it would use "force" if the plane landed, a source at the
Lebanese transport ministry told Reuters.

The source said it was not clear what was on the plane, adding: "The priority is
people".

Late on Friday, Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said
Israeli air force planes were "patrolling the area of the Beirut airport" and
would not allow "hostile flights with weapons to land" there.

"We know about Iranian arms transfers to Hezbollah and are thwarting them," he
said.

Hezbollah has fired hundreds of rockets and missiles at targets in Israel,
including Tel Aviv. The group said it had fired more on Saturday and Israel's
military said sirens had sounded in northern Israel. Israel's air defence
systems have ensured the damage has so far been minimal.

The Israeli military said the country is on high alert for a broader conflict.

Nasrallah, its leader for 32 years.

IRANIAN LEADER KHAMENEI CALLS ON MUSLIMS TO CONFRONT ISRAEL

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Muslims on Saturday "to
stand by the people of Lebanon and the proud Hezbollah with whatever means they
have and assist them in confronting the ... wicked regime (of Israel)".

Khamenei, in a statement after the Israeli army said it had killed Hezbollah
leader Hassan Nasrallah, said: "The fate of this region will be determined by
the forces of resistance, with Hezbollah at the forefront", state media
reported.

Khamenei has been transferred to a secure location inside the country with
heightened security measures in place, two regional officials briefed by Tehran
told Reuters.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been transferred to a secure
location inside the country with heightened security measures in place, two
regional officials briefed by Tehran told Reuters.

The sources said Iran was in constant contact with Lebanon's Hezbollah and other
regional proxy groups to determine the next step after Israel announced that it
had killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in a strike on south Beirut on
Friday.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in the Iranian capital Tehran in
July.

Haniyeh was killed by a missile that hit him in a state guesthouse where he was
staying for the inauguration of the new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Israeli officials have not so far claimed responsibility for the killing of
Haniyeh.

Israel said on Saturday it had killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
in an airstrike in Beirut's southern suburbs, in what would be a devastating
blow to the group as it reels from an escalating campaign of Israeli attacks.

Reuters could not immediately reach Hezbollah officials for comment.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah has yet to issue any statement on the status of
Nasrallah, its leader for 32 years.

If confirmed, Nasrallah's death would mark a major blow not only to Hezbollah
but also its backers in Iran.

He has long been a leading figure in the Tehran-backed "Axis of Resistance",
helping to project Iranian influence across the Middle East.

The Israeli military said in a statement that Nasrallah was eliminated in a
"targeted strike" on the group's underground headquarters under a residential
building in Dahiyeh - a Hezbollah-controlled southern suburb of Beirut.

It said he was killed along with another top Hezbollah leader - Ali Karaki - and
other commanders.

"The strike was conducted while Hezbollah’s senior chain of command were
operating from the headquarters and advancing terrorist activities against the
citizens of the State of Israel," it said.

Friday's airstrike on Dahiyeh shook Beirut. A security source in Lebanon said
the attack - a quick succession of massively powerful blasts - had left a crater
at least 20 meters deep.

The attack, followed on Saturday by further airstrikes on Dahiyeh and other
parts of Lebanon, have escalated the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

The escalation has sharply increased fears the conflict could spin out of
control, potentially drawing in Iran, Hezbollah's principal backer, as well as
the United States.

LEBANON'S NASRALLAH - WHO ISRAEL SAYS IT HAS KILLED - HAS LED HEZBOLLAH TO
BECOME REGIONAL FORCE

11:13 CEST

FILE PHOTO: Boy scouts carry a picture of Hezbollah leader Nasrallah during the
funeral of Hezbollah member Ali Mohamed Chalbi, after hand-held radios and
pagers used by Hezbollah detonated across Lebanon, in Kfar Melki, Lebanon
September 19, 2024.

Lebanon's Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who Israel said on Saturday it has killed,
has led Hezbollah through decades of conflict with Israel, overseeing its
transformation into a military force with regional sway and becoming one of the
most prominent Arab figures in generations - with Iranian backing.

The Iran-backed Hezbollah has yet to issue any statement on the status of
Nasrallah, who has led the group for 32 years.

The Israeli military said it had killed Nasrallah in an airstrike on the group's
central headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut a day earlier.

The Israeli military "eliminated ... Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the Hezbollah
terrorist organization," Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee wrote in a
statement on X.

If the Israeli claim of his death is confirmed by Hezbollah, Nasrallah will be
remembered among his supporters for standing up to Israel and defying the United
States. To enemies, he has been head of a terrorist organisation and a proxy for
Iran's Shi'ite Islamist theocracy in its tussle for influence in the Middle
East.

His regional influence has been on display over nearly a year of conflict
ignited by the Gaza war, as Hezbollah entered the fray by firing on Israel from
southern Lebanon in support of its Palestinian ally Hamas, and Yemeni and Iraqi
groups followed suit, operating under the umbrella of "The Axis of Resistance".

"We are facing a great battle," Nasrallah said in an Aug. 1 speech at the
funeral of Hezbollah's top military commander, Fuad Shukr, who was killed in an
Israeli strike on the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut.

Yet when thousands of Hezbollah members were injured and dozens killed, when
their communications devices exploded in an apparent Israeli attack last week,
that battle began to turn against his group.

Responding to the attacks on Hezbollah's communications network in a Sept. 19
speech, Nasrallah vowed to punish Israel.

"This is a reckoning that will come, its nature, its size, how and where? This
is certainly what we will keep to ourselves and in the narrowest circle even
within ourselves," he said.

He has not given a broadcast address since then.

HAMAS LEADER KILLED IN DAHIYEH EARLIER THIS YEAR

The Hezbollah stronghold in southern Beirut where Israel said it killed Hassan
Nasrallah is also where deputy Hamas chief Saleh al-Arouri was killed on Jan. 2,
2024 by a drone strike.

Israel did not claim the strike on Arouri, who founded the West Bank arm of
Hamas' military wing, the Qassam Brigades.
