Three cities in south central Kansas will be receiving federal grants to develop
plans to improve safety and prevent deaths and serious injuries on local
roadways.   The grants are under the Safe Streets and Roads For All program.

Hutchinson, Newton and El Dorado are among seven Kansas communities receiving a
combined total of $1.47 million in funding through the SS4A program.   Kansas
Governor Laura Kelly announced the grant recipients

Hutchinson Public Works Director Brian Clennan said the $160,000 grant will be
used to create an Action Plan to prevent roadway deaths and injuries.

Newton City Engineer Suzanne Loomis said the SS4A award of $320,000 will be used
by the City of Newton in collaboration with Harvey County to develop a City and
County Safety Action Plan and to conduct supplemental planning such as road
safety audits, intersection analyses and corridor analyses at known high-crash
locations.

El Dorado City Manager David Dillner said in a press release, “The funding
received will empower us to craft a comprehensive safety action plan,
prioritizing roadway safety with data-driven strategies.  This critical
assistance enables us to engage stakeholders, implement inclusive processes and
work toward our goal of zero roadway fatalities and reduced serious injuries.”
El Dorado will receive $160,000 in funding.

Other grants were presented to Eureka, Russell, Shawnee County and Chautauqua
County.
