UNCOMPROMISING AND FANTASTIC



As a rule, I don't do horror, but I was intrigued by the premise of this one so
I went for it and within minutes I was hooked. (My dog got an extra-long walk
out of this one-and-done listening binge!) An Audible Emerging Playwrights'
commission from James Fritz, this experimental piece employs audacious
storytelling and sophisticated sound engineering to create a horrific but also
incredibly beautiful production. Amid the backdrop of madness and horror there's
so much humanity here. The father in the story is 100 percent Nick in Gone Girl.
He's guileless but untrustworthy, with that 'aw shucks, who me?' quality that’s
both enraging and endearing. And the two women in the story are so recognizable,
so sympathetic—even if their stories push the boundaries of believability—that
your heart will hurt for them. My verdict: Skyscraper Lullaby is the most
bizarre and compelling thing I've listened to all year. I love that this story
didn’t hold back, it just went for it. And so should you.

CONNECTION THAT SPANS GENERATIONS



I haven’t felt this connected to characters in a long time. Good Enemy tells
multiple stories, time-jumping between 1984 and 2021, as Howard (Francis Jue)
tries to improve his relationship with his daughter, Momo (Geena Quintos). As
things unfold, you begin to understand that Howard’s past life in China is his
ticket to a future with his daughter. It’s hard to pick my favorite part, but in
a play filled with complex topics of oppression and isolation, the comedic
timing of Yilong Liu’s production cannot be overlooked. From Howard meeting
Momo’s boyfriend to his disdain for social media, I couldn’t help but think of
my own father. I still remember teaching him Facebook and regretting it
instantly. Now, I wouldn’t give up that memory, though my dad might! It’s a
reminder that the unspoken bond between people matters. Human connection
matters. And so does this listen.

Anyone who’s ever witnessed Ali Stroker onstage never forgets the joy and
enthusiasm she brings to her roles. I first saw her when she made history as the
first actor in a wheelchair to appear on Broadway when she appeared in Deaf
West's acclaimed 2015 revival of Spring Awakening. Then she transformed the role
of Ado Annie in an unconventional revival of Oklahoma! in 2019, winning the Tony
Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Now, Ali brings her warmth and
passion and jaw-dropping singing to her one-woman show, which she developed with
her husband, director David Perlow. Recorded this past spring at the Minetta
Lane Theatre in New York City, it encompasses personal stories, favorite songs,

I straight up humiliated myself while standing in line at a taco truck because I
couldn’t stop cracking up while listening to this title. Tony Shalhoub is a
national treasure, his performance as the doctor is so real and so effortlessly
hysterical. Really wonderful story that digs into men’s insecurities and lays
them bare, both figuratively and literally.
