FIRESIDE CHAT: SUPPORTING COMMUNITY AND CULTURE TO GUIDE METAVERSE GROWTH

Since the metaverse entered the cultural consciousness, it hasn’t loosened its
grip on marketers’ minds, fueling FOMO and building urgency to invest in the
fast-growing space. While forays in the metaverse will indeed shape brand
engagement in a new era of virtualization, what types of talent and partners
should the C suite seek out? What are the skills that will become table stakes
for success in the metaverse? Sir Martin Sorrell, Chairman of S4 Capital, will
lead a discussion on the macro outlook for the Metaverse, from 5G and the
machinery of the Metaverse to customer engagement, from retail to entertainment
with leaders that are building the future.

FIRESIDE CHAT: HOW CAN WE ENSURE THE METAVERSE IS OPEN, SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE?

Sponsored by Meta:

The metaverse is at a critical early stage in its development. There is nothing
deterministic in the way technology impacts society. People will use it as they
see fit – and people will misuse it as well. Just as we have seen how problems
in our physical society have manifested on the internet, they will reoccur in
any system or platform regardless of what it is or who builds it. Who will set
the rules and standards for the metaverse? Whose interests should those rules
seek to protect? Join us for a discussion of the system of governance that can
maximise the metaverse’s potential for good and minimise its potential harms.

THAT EXCEEDS USER EXPECTATIONS

Fireside chat: from science fiction to everyday life: assembling a
      metaverse that exceeds user expectations

Neal Stephenson is a best-selling author, futurist and visionary. Known for
his works of speculative fiction, Stephenson has written on topics ranging
from science fiction to technology to mathematics to philosophy over the last
   five decades.

Stephenson grew up among scientists and engineers in Midwestern college
towns. After studying physics and geography at Boston University, he penned
his first novel The Big U, a campus satire, published in 1984. Four years
later, he published Zodiac, a thriller about an environmentalist’s fight
against corporate pollution. In another four years, Stephenson would achieve
his breakout moment with Snow Crash, a cyberpunk novel most known for
creating and coining the term “metaverse.” Now a critically acclaimed New
York Times million-selling novel, Snow Crash a is a must-read for many of the
greatest minds in business and technology today. His subsequent novel The
Diamond Age went on to explore the possibilities of distributed payment
systems in a worldwide media network, and won the Hugo and Locus Awards in
   1996.

In 1999, Stephenson went on to publish Cryptonomicon, a novel exploring
everything from codebreaking and cryptography during the Second World War to
what a modern “data haven” or unregulated data server might look like in the
future. Cryptonomicon went on to win the Prometheus Hall of Fame Award and is
frequently credited with inspiring a generation of cryptocurrency pioneers.
Outside of writing, in the early 2000s, Neal became Employee #1 at Jeff
Bezos’ space flight company Blue Origin, where he spent nearly seven years.
While at Blue, he worked with a small team of physicists and engineers to
evaluate alternate approaches to space travel and propulsion systems.

Between 2003 and 2013, he went on to publish several additional novels as
well as various shorter nonfiction pieces. His 2015 novel Seveneves appeared
on the summer reading lists of Bill Gates and Barack Obama. In 2014,
Stephenson was hired as Chief Futurist by Magic Leap, the world’s leading
spatial computing company. There he ran a content R & D squad that developed
new augmented reality experiences. In June 2021, Stephenson and several
colleagues released New Found Land: The Long Haul, an Audible audio drama
based on the world they developed at Magic Leap. After departing from Magic
Leap in 2020, he received an Epic MegaGrant to fund a virtual production
project based on ideas from The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., a 2017 novel he
   co-wrote with Nicole Galland.

Thirty years after Snow Crash was first published, Neal partnered with crypto
pioneer Peter Vessenes to finally bring his idea of the Metaverse to life. In
   June of 2022, he launched LAMINA1 , a Layer-1 blockchain purpose-built for
the Open Metaverse, where he now serves as co-founder and chairman.

PANEL DISCUSSION: PLAY, CREATE AND LEARN: A YOUTH PERSPECTIVE ON DIGITAL

The metaverse and immersive technologies present opportunities for a different
version of education. A future of learning where young people are actively
shaping their own experiences, playing and learning in collaborative
environments that are inherently meaningful to their community and interests.
However, the current use and prospects for metaverse and technologies are often
following a different path. What are the ways we can support engagement and
learning through digital technologies? What do young people think about the
opportunities and balance of physical and digital modes of engagement? And how
do we enable children’s play, creativity and learning with the many
opportunities that are presented to them?

CASE STUDY: HOW AND WHY UNITED STATES SPACE FORCE IS BUILDING A DIGITAL TWIN

United States Space Force (USSF) Guardians are the custodians of American
Spacepower, charged with preserving freedom in space, enabling joint defence of
national interests, and executing space operations. Unfortunately, Guardians
today are equipped with antiquated tools, techniques, and technologies for force
design, system development, training, and operations which limit the Space
Force’s ability to support full-spectrum, multi-domain operations. The USSF is
exploring the emerging world of commercial Metaverse technologies to try and
address these limits on Guardians and space operations, and driving the Space
Force forward as the first U.S. born-digital service within the Department of

THE GHOST PROBLEM: CAN WE TRULY IMMERSE PEOPLE IN VIRTUAL WORLDS WITHOUT
REALISTIC TOUCH FEEDBACK?

Sponsored by HaptX:

Some believe touch is the most important missing element of the metaverse.
Particularly so in enterprise and industrial applications which seek to train
workers to perform manual skills, with productivity, profitability, and even
life or death consequences at stake. How critical is touch to the future of the
enterprise metaverse? And what technologies can organisations deploy, today and
in the future, to create virtual and mixed reality environments with the sensory
richness of real life?

PANEL DISCUSSION: IS WEB3 THE SOLUTION TO DOING A BETTER JOB WITH DATA? THE
PRACTICALITIES OF RETURNING CONTROL TO CONSUMERS

      Automation, technology and democracy

Andrew Yang is an entrepreneur, author, philanthropist, non-profit leader,
   and former 2020 presidential candidate.

After working as a lawyer and executive at several early-stage technology
companies, Andrew eventually became CEO of an education company that became
#1 in the country. He then started a national entrepreneurship non-profit,
Venture for America, which worked to empower thousands of young entrepreneurs
to bring their dynamism to communities across the country, from New Orleans
and Baltimore to Denver and Detroit.

Andrew was named a Presidential Ambassador of Entrepreneurship by the White
House under the Obama administration and a Champion of Change for his work
with Venture for America. Initially dubbed a “longer than long shot”
candidate by the New York Times in 2018, Andrew became a top-tier contender
for the presidency, raising nearly $40 million in grassroots funding.

With a vision to rewrite the rules of the United States economy through a
“Freedom Dividend” of $1,000 a month for every American adult, Andrew became
one of the most exciting stories in the 2020 race. Andrew’s nationwide
support, known as the “Yang Gang,” propelled him to seven Democratic primary
debates, outlasting six senators, four governors, three members of congress,
   two mayors, and one secretary.

Following this unexpected run for president, Andrew formed the non-profit
Humanity Forward, successfully lobbying Congress for direct cash relief for
struggling American families during the pandemic while simultaneously
distributing over $8 million directly to struggling families.

From his presidential and New York mayoral runs, Andrew has seen first-hand
what’s preventing our country from getting things done, and he is now
directing his energies towards fixing the machinery of our stagnant
democracy. With Forward – Notes on the Future of Our Democracy, Andrew lays
out the case for a variety of democracy reform measures that can unclog the
pipes of our system and realign the incentives of legislators with the
   wellbeing of the American people.

But where is there the greatest value in their application and how can artists

MAKING THE METAVERSE MORE HUMAN: WHY DIGITAL HUMANISM HOLDS THE KEY TO UNLOCKING
VALUE

In this nascent phase of its evolution, organisations are still trying to figure
out what people want from the metaverse. Some will be looking for a more
advanced form of escapism – Instagram on steroids, if you will. But NEOM’s
vision of the metaverse is not a place to get lost, but rather a place to be
found. It’s an opportunity to extend the human experience without losing the
very essence of what it is that makes us human – a chance to interact and
connect with people, to build communities and to live immersive experiences that
have genuine emotional value.

What a way to make a living: to what extent is “play-to-earn” a golden
      opportunity for greater prosperity?

A veteran technology entrepreneur/investor based in Hong Kong, Yat Siu is the
co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, a global leader in
blockchain and gaming with the mission to deliver digital property rights to
the world’s gamers and Internet users, thereby creating a new asset class,
play-to-earn economies, and a more equitable digital framework contributing
to the building of the open metaverse.

Yat began his career at Atari Germany in 1990. In 1995 he moved to Hong Kong
to establish Hong Kong Cybercity/Freenation, the first free web page and
email provider in Asia. In 1998 he set up Outblaze, an award-winning pioneer
of multilingual white label web services. In 2009, he sold Outblaze’s
messaging unit to IBM and pivoted Outblaze to become an incubator of projects
and companies to develop digital entertainment services and products. One of
those incubated companies is Animoca Brands, which was created in 2014.

In 2017 he set up the Dalton Learning Lab, an afterschool digital lab for
skills not emphasized by most education systems, including divergent thinking
and design thinking. He is the founder of ThinkBlaze, the research arm of
Outblaze investigating socially meaningful issues in technology.

Since 2018, Yat has been an early advocate for the use of blockchain and
non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the gaming industry, which will allow gamers to
enjoy true ownership of their own game assets, data, and, consequently,
equity. With a clear vision of the potential of decentralized apps and
assets, Yat quickly steered Animoca Brands to a leadership position in
blockchain, gaming, NFTs, and the open metaverse. Recently valued at $5.8
billion, Animoca Brands operates a series of NFT-centric subsidiaries and
products, and has invested in over 170 blockchain-related companies to build
one of the largest blockchain portfolios in the world.

Yat has earned numerous accolades including Global Leader of Tomorrow at the
World Economic Forum, Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the DHL/SCMP Awards,
and recognition as one of the Cointelegraph top 100 notable people in
   blockchain.

A classically trained musician, Yat is a member of the advisory board of
BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) and a director of the
   Asian Youth Orchestra.

INTEROPERABILITY AND STANDARDS: HOW WILL WE MOVE BETWEEN VIRTUAL WORLDS, AND
WILL WE BE ABLE TO TAKE OUR ASSETS WITH US?

The metaverse, for now, is a siloed collection of separate virtual worlds,
rather than one big open platform akin to the internet. This makes transfer of
assets between these spaces difficult, limiting their value. How realistic is
the vision of the open metaverse? What are the barriers to overcome to enable
interoperability between platforms?

DESIGNING FOR ‘THE PROTEUS EFFECT’: HOW WILL METAVERSE CHANGE OUR BEHAVIOUR AS
IT RESHAPES OUR EXPERIENCES?

The metaverse will likely have sweeping consequences for human behaviour. The
“Proteus effect” is a phenomenon describing how people change their behaviour in
virtual worlds based on the characteristics of their avatar, such as visual
features. In other words, people will engage in behaviours different than they
would normally and conform to what is expected or stereotypical behaviour based
on the appearance of their avatars. Embodied cognition theory means that “states
of the body modify states of the mind”. As we enter Web3, understanding these
psychological principles of empathic design is more important than ever if
society is to be better off.

Panel discussion: answering the million-dollar question and stopping the
trolls in their tracks: who should moderate the metaverse?

Dr. Louis Rosenberg is an early pioneer in the fields of virtual and
augmented reality. His work began over thirty years ago in labs at Stanford,
NASA, and the US Air Force. He earned his PhD from Stanford University, has
been awarded over 300 patents for VR, AR, and AI technologies, and writes
often about the metaverse for academic and mainstream publications.

In 1992, Rosenberg developed the first interactive augmented reality system
at Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). In 1993 he founded the early virtual
reality company Immersion Corporation, which pioneered a diverse range of
metaverse technologies from medical VR systems for surgical training to
haptic interfaces for consumer markets. Now a public company on NASDAQ,
Immersion is possibly the oldest VR company still around from the early days.

Rosenberg also founded Microscribe 3D, a company that helped bring 3D
graphics to gaming and entertainment. Launched in 1996, their Microscribe
digitizer was used in the making of many classic films, from Shrek and Ice
Age to Titanic. In 2004 Rosenberg founded the augmented reality company
Outland Research, developer of early geospatial media technologies and AR
interface technologies acquired by Google in 2011.

In 2014, Rosenberg founded Unanimous AI, an artificial intelligence company
that amplifies the intelligence of human groups in shared environments. Their
award-winning Swarm software is used by Fortune 500 corporations to amplify
the intelligence of human teams, enabling significantly more accurate
forecasts, predictions and decisions while keeping humans in the loop.

Louis Rosenberg is currently a leading voice on the need for metaverse
regulation, sounding the alarm that without regulation metaverse platforms
could wield unprecedented power over the lives of consumers. As an advocate
for metaverse consumer protections, Rosenberg is currently the Chief
Scientist of the Responsible Metaverse Alliance, the Global Technology
Advisor to the XR Safety Initiative (XRSI), a technology advisor to the
Future of Marketing Institute, and a regular contributor to VentureBeat and
Big Think on metaverse and AI related issues.
