Once you sign up for a health plan with an HSA, and your plan becomes effective, you can start adding money tax-free to your account. You can do this through payroll deductions or through additional deposits whenever you want. BASIC CONTRIBUTION RULES Although anyone can contribute to your HSA, contributions are typically only made by you–and in some circumstances, by your employer. Contributions can be made in 1 of 2 ways: 1. Pretax contributions1 designated through payroll 2. Post-tax contributions2 that require an above-the-line deduction when you file your annual income tax return If your employer allows pretax contributions through payroll, this is typically the easiest and most beneficial way to contribute to your HSA. It also provides tax relief from various payroll taxes. ANNUAL MAXIMUM CONTRIBUTION LIMIT In some cases, HSAs provide a higher annual contribution limit than Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA). And if you’re age 55 or older, you can make an added catch-up contribution up to $1,000 in the calendar year. The IRS provides maximum annual contribution limits, based on the type of underlying high-deductible health plan (HDHP) coverage you have: Single or family. If you have more than one person covered under your HDHP, you are classified as a “family.” The annual IRS maximum contribution limit applies to all contributions made to your account, regardless of who makes the contribution. The annual maximum contribution limits are as follows. 2021 2022 Single $3,600 $3,650 Family $7,200 $7,300 Use our HSA calculator to help you decide how much to contribute REAL-TIME HSA ACCOUNT ACCESS 24/7 ON MYCIGNA.COM * Log in at myCigna.com or through the myCigna® app * Go to Spending Accounts in the main menu and select Health Savings Account (HSA) from the dropdown menu * Select Manage Your HSA 1HSA contributions and earnings are not subject to federal taxes and not subject to state taxes in most states.
