OCC FOUNDING MEMBERS

IN 2004, THESE 14 LEADING LAW FIRMS FORMED THE OCC TO JOINTLY SOLVE THE PROBLEM
OF THEIR MANDATORY AML TRAINING REQUIREMENTS. THEY WERE CONVINCED THAT THE ONLY
WAY TO CREATE TRAINING THAT WOULD WITHSTAND REGULATORY SCRUTINY WAS BY WORKING
TOGETHER. IT WAS DEFENCE IN NUMBERS. ANY FIRM COULD TELL THE REGULATOR THAT 13
OTHER LEADING FIRMS WERE USING THE SAME TRAINING.

THE BUSINESS MODEL

HOW THE OCC MODEL WORKS

PLANNING

A company expresses a need or a compliance problem to VinciWorks and the seeds
of a new core group are planted. VinciWorks approaches other companies in the
sector to determine whether there is common interest in a solution. VinciWorks
organises a meeting to determine high-level specifications for the product.

EXECUTION

A group of firms agree to actively participate in ongoing meetings and advise
VinciWorks on product details. The VinciWorks team manages the project and
creates the solution in close consultation with the group. Firms who participate
in the core group benefit from enhanced access to the development team and the
ability to add features that they require. The combined investment in
intellectual as well as financial resources by all Core Group firms ensures that
the solution is of the highest quality in terms of practical requirements,
reduces the risks one firm takes in trying to develop a solution independently
and reduces the cost to each individual firm.

MAINTENANCE

The finished solution is tested and then implemented by the Core Group firms,
and the tested and approved solution is offered to other firms at a licence fee
determined by the Core Group. Uptake by the Core Group and other OCC firms
establishes the new solution as an industry standard, while the Core Group
remains responsible together with VinciWorks for enhancing and maintaining the
solution.

Che Odlum, DLA Piper

> People are often surprised that we managed to persuade so many major law firms
> to collaborate and agree on a single draft but we had very senior people
