Billionaire entrepreneur and Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos revealed he will make
the cross-country move from Seattle to Miami, making the business mogul the
wealthiest new resident of the Sunshine State.

Bezos, the third-richest man in the world according to Forbes, confirmed in an
Instagram post on Nov. 2 that he plans on leaving the Emerald City for the Magic
City to be closer to his family and Cape Canaveral space exploration venture
Blue Origin LLC.

"My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They recently moved back to
Miami, the place we lived when I was younger (Miami Palmetto High class of ’82 —
GO Panthers!) I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami.
Also, Blue Origin’s operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral. For
all that, I’m planning to return to Miami, leaving the Pacific Northwest,"
Bezos' caption read.

The Amazon founder with a whopping $114 billion net worth according to Forbes
made the announcement just a week after his trust purchased an Indian Creek
mansion for $79 million. The home is next to the mansion at 11 Indian Creek
Island Road that he bought for $68 million in July.

The Bezos family purchased several neighboring mansions in Coral Gables in
2022.

During his 29 years in Seattle, Bezos helped transform the region's tech
industry and revitalized the downtown area with Amazon being the city’s largest
private employer. In his Instagram post, the serial entrepreneur shared a video
from 1994 of himself in his Seattle garage, where he founded Amazon. He stepped
down as CEO of the company in 2021.

South Florida has seen an influx of high-net worth and ultra high-net worth
individuals migrating to the area; a trend which ignited during the pandemic and
has been sustained by the appeal of Florida's pro-business incentives and no
state income tax.

Last year, billionaire hedge fund founder Ken Griffin of Citadel moved his
company headquarters to Miami and acquired multiple properties in Miami-Dade and
Palm Beach counties.

The increased concentration of wealth could have impacts on home values, as
housing demand grows in correlation with the wealthy population, and so does the
marginal propensity of consumption in the region. That additional spending
benefits local businesses and the economy, but is also what contributes to
higher prices for things like food, gas and rent.

And while average wages and the year-over-year rate of growth have increased in
Florida, the state and local average still sit below the national level and
annual wage growth still lags behind the 7.8% year-over-year inflation rate
growth in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro area.
