If you hear scratching in your ceiling or walls you may think it’s a mouse.
Chances are you are hearing the sound of bat claws on your drywall. Bats like
very warm spaces therefore underneath your insulation and down your walls is the
perfect spot. Bats in Michigan are cavity-dwelling bats so they roost in caves
or cave-like structures. Your attic is set up like an artificial cave, a perfect
environment. Bats are nocturnal mammals, so the sounds you hear at night are
bats coming and going to feast on mosquitoes. Bat removal and bat exclusion work
are essential because bats carry many diseases like rabies. Their droppings (bat
guano) can cause lung infection diseases like histoplasmosis. When the tiny

TIME OF YEAR

To determine the time of year: it's essential to check if it's the right time to
remove bats from the attic. If it's spring or summer, it may be illegal to
remove the bats as they may have young ones that can't yet fly.


BAT INSPECTION

Inspect the attic: Check for any entry points that the bats use to enter the
attic. These could be small gaps or holes that the bats can squeeze through.


ONE-WAY BAT DOOR

Install one-way exclusion devices. One-way exclusion devices are designed to
allow bats to leave the attic but not re-enter. Install them on all entry points
that were identified earlier. It's important to ensure that no bats are left
behind in the attic, and the devices should be left in place for several days to
make sure all the bats have left.


SEAL ENTRY POINTS

Seal entry points after all bats have left the attic. This will prevent future
entry. Materials like caulk, mesh, or foam insulation can be used to do this.


ATTIC RESTORATION

Cleaning bats' guano is important since they can be a health hazard. To ensure
the safety of the area, it's essential to remove all droppings and thoroughly
clean and disinfect the area.

Install a bat house. Since bats are beneficial for the environment, it is
recommended to install a bat house nearby. This will provide them with a safe
place to roost and raise their young.
