April Chu 199 Customer Engagement Leader in San Francisco 09/20/21 at 7:13PM GMT I cannot stress #3 enough especially right now. It is important to get out, get fresh air and move (however you want to do it). We all need an outlet and the easiest is a walk or any favorite physical activity. 1 like Reply See more comments Anonymous 09/20/21 at 8:18PM GMT in GenX Women Feeling like a complete failure. I did everything think I was "supposed" to do. Went to college and grad school, majored in marketing, and I now am 42 an unemployed ( again) right now. I've had a series of set backs in my career from losing jobs due to a recession or layoff during corporate restructuring so I've never really had a solid "career". Just all bad luck. I keep landing interviews for my dream jobs over the years but nothing ever ...More Like 4 comments Share Join the conversation... Anonymous 09/20/21 at 8:55PM GMT I was literally having this same conversation over the weekend: I did "everything right" and "what I was supposed to" (good grades, practical major, internships and jobs that went nowhere, but I still put in the hours and effort) and nothing worked out the way I planned or wanted and there are days that I am, quite frankly, miserable....like cry in bed when my alarm goes off miserable. I say this because 1) you're not alone 2) it's never too late to try again or try something new I'm currently realizing that I need to think outside the box more, because "doing what I'm supposed to do" has imposed more restrictions on me for no reason other than trying to meet other's expectations and sometimes those people don't even have those same expectations for me! Obviously with bills to pay, I can only take so many risks, but as Heather mentioned: "what do you really WANT to do?" I only say this as a caution: try not to let your sub-conscious self doubts have too much power. I've always suspected that people pick up on those kinds of things more than we realize. Next time you have an interview, treat yourself for the entire day before hand and make sure you only view yourself positively so that you present yourself confidently both consciously and subconsciously! Like Reply See more comments Anonymous 09/20/21 at 8:34PM GMT Are recruiters typically apathetic (or unempathetic - not as nice or friendly) once you have signed the offer? My recruiter was super nice when she was trying to hire me, but now after I signed the offer, it's like I am talking to Emily Charlton (the snooty assistant in the Devil wears Prada). Like 1 comment Share Join the conversation... Anonymous 09/20/21 at 8:46PM GMT Now the hard part for your recruiter is over. She has successfully recruited you. The on boarding process and interaction will most likely be handled electronically and HR will most likely handle your orientation and handoff to your supervisor. Anonymous 09/20/21 at 5:34PM GMT Not Happy at my current job. As we all know the unemployment of the pandemic brought a lot of stress, depression and anxiety to those looking for QUALITY work and getting rejection time and time again. I was very much so one of those people but in July that turned around. I was hired by a well known company and given more pay than at my last job, I was given healthcare and an opportunity for them to help pay for some of my school since I’m also ...More Like 2 comments Share Join the conversation... The first time, the scammer had all ducks in a row...the company's letterhead (it was a German company that the scammer claimed was opening a US branch), the persona of an actual employee, the logo, and the CEO's signature. If I had not done extensive research on the little red flags, I probably would have had my ...More 2 likes 7 comments Share Join the conversation... I'm looking for guidance and not sure what group might be most helpful. My personal life is changing and I've been working remotely since 3/20 and my company is not approving me to continue to work remotely. I'm willing to leave my current position for a remote only one, if I can find it as it's best for my personal situation. I've been in my position almost 20 years and not sure what I'm qualified for at another ...More 2 likes 3 comments Share Join the conversation... Maureen Drinkwater 101 Orchestrating a career reentry like no other! 09/20/21 at 7:50PM GMT Welcome! It is unfortunate that your employer is not joining the ranks of so many others and allowing for positions that changed to remote during the pandemic to remain remote. FGB in general and its groups such as the Career Crossroads and Remote Work & Job Interview Tips have supportive members. I encourage you to investigate all that FGB has to offer. As you consider your next steps, it might be useful to make a list of your on-the-job successes, both major and minor. Think of times you received positive feedback about your work performance from supervisors, colleagues and, if applicable, people outside of the organization with whom you interacted. Additionally, there might have been times when you did not receive recognition for a job well done but you felt a great sense of accomplishment. In the course of your tenure, you must have witnessed lots of change. How did you deal with the change? Have you held the same role in the almost 20 years you have worked for this employer? If you have been promoted, or if you made any targeted, lateral moves, these are achievements to think about as you prepare to find another job and to draft your resume. You indicate that parting ways with your employer will be bittersweet. Is this because of the sense of belongingness that you have felt working for this employer? Is it that its values are aligned with yours? What motivated you to remain working for this employer for as long as you have (outside of the very tangible needs for income and benefits!)? What excited you about your job and what were less desirable aspects of it? Are there skills and interests of yours that you have been developing outside of work that you would like to be a part of your next role? Are there trusted individuals who know your talents and abilities who could help you brainstorm about a new opportunity for you? There are many resources for people in career transition and for those who would like to find remote work. Of course, FGB is one of those resources. Another is The Mom Project (not just for Moms!). FlexJobs offers free, limited and paid, full access to its job board and free webinars. US state career centers offer free career counseling and assistance with job search activities such as resume and cover letter writing, networking, interviewing and negotiating salaries as well as skills training. As another post mentioned, you will find career coaches on FGB but also on LinkedIn and elsewhere online and via networking events. Some offer free, initial consultations. There is much to do in switching jobs. Try to set and track manageable daily and weekly goals. Wishing you find the role that is, as you state, best for your situation! How bad is it to accept and then change my mind if the better one comes along? 2 likes 5 comments Share Join the conversation... Healthcare worker 303 09/20/21 at 7:15PM GMT Contact the company you are waiting on and inquire where they are in the offer process. Let them know you just received an offer but would prefer to be with them pending the compensation package. Don’t worry it’s a perfectly acceptable practice. For the company who made the offer ask for a day or two to review the offer and let them know you will contact them in that time. 2 likes Reply See more comments Anonymous 09/20/21 at 3:34PM GMT Is it appropriate to ask for a raise when I just applied for another job internally? I did some research and I am paid 20% less than industry standard for my role. On top of that a male colleague at the same level as me, with less experience and less education makes 20k+ more than me. And he just got a raise for “inflation” we live in the same city… so is it appropriate for me to ask? how do I ask? #payequality! 1 like 2 comments Share Join the conversation... Anonymous 09/20/21 at 6:41PM GMT You can certainly share this inequity if you came by the info from these people personally. Others it just rumor or hearsay and confidential personnel info. If you want to share your market research that is wise. You can use this info to support your request for a raise and maybe a promotion if you are working at higher level than these comps in terms of job responsibilities.
