MATERIALS EVALUATION, APRIL 2022



In this special Technical Focus Issue of Materials Evaluation, guest editors
Surendra Singh of Honeywell Aerospace and Peter Collins of Iowa State University
explore the paradigm shift in additive manufacturing (AM). AM has revolutionized
manufacturing and reinvigorated various economic sectors (especially aerospace),
largely due to its design freedom, reduced costs and lead time, and Industry 4.0
integrations. Despite these successes, nondestructive evaluation (NDE)
challenges need to be addressed before it is widely adopted.

Papers in this issue include a perspective on the role of in situ process
monitoring in the certification of additive manufactured space hardware; an
overview of thermocouple process monitoring for AM; a review of ultrasonic
characterization of porosity in components made by binder jet AM ; a paper on
thermal calibration of an on-axis melt pool monitoring photodetector system; and
a review of the needs and opportunities for coupling materials science and NDE
for metals-based AM.
