FROM STAY-AT-HOME MOM TO BRANCH DIRECTOR: FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE AT RBC
WEALTH MANAGEMENT

When Terri Edwards had her first child, she drafted up a resignation letter. She
was ready to leave the workforce to become a full-time stay-at-home mom.

But she never sent the letter.

The same thing happened again when she had her second child: She wrote the
letter, but never had the heart to submit it. She cared deeply about her work,
but also loved her kids and wanted to give them 100 percent of her attention.

Juggling a 5- and 3-year-old, she eventually resigned to take a step back from
work and raise her kids.

“It was really tough, a very emotional decision,” she said. “But it was
necessary at the time for me.”

Ten years went by, and as her kids grew up, she decided to return to the
workforce full-time. When she started her job search, it was important for her
to find a reputable company with a great culture that would support her
transition back into the industry, while also allowing her to be the mother she
wanted to be and the employee she was striving to become.

“Once you have kids, you’re forever changed. Your empathy goes up, and you look
at things completely differently,” Edwards said. “You’re constantly multitasking
because you have to get so much done and you’re pulled in different directions.”

Edwards quickly realized that the culture at RBC Wealth Management was exactly
what she needed at that critical time of her life.

And RBC Wealth Management saw and valued her skills, too. Edwards says firm
leadership has done a good job of letting women, and mothers especially, know
that they mean it when they say family comes first. At RBC Wealth Management,
Edwards found the freedom to work flexible hours, as well as resources to help
support her growth. Within two years at the firm, Edwards was promoted to branch
director of the Houston, Texas office.

“It’s a huge responsibility and one I take very, very seriously,” she said. “I
took six different tests to get back in the door, and now I manage one of the
largest branches here at the firm.”

Edwards’ children are now in college, high school and pre-teen years, and she’s
been with RBC Wealth Management for five years. While becoming a branch director
has been a daunting experience, especially after so much time away from the
workforce, she was up for the challenge that leadership entrusted her with.

“Many companies claim that they care, but when push comes to shove, that’s when
the true character of a culture comes through,” she said. “If you work hard and
you really care about your people, they will promote you, or they will look for
positions for you where you can shine.”
