Contact meniu free predictions sports 80% winner HOW A WEBSITE CAN HELP A BUSINESS in our mini-series learning web design from scratch this video is going to be all about how a website can help a business I'm gonna be using some cutting-edge technology the classic whiteboard to show you guys how it all fits together so in the last video and I'll link it in the description we covered how to learn coding from scratch how to get up to speed on HTML and CSS now we need to start figuring out how we can use that skill set to help a business so just because we know how to make a website just because we know some coding doesn't necessarily mean we can help a business we also have to have additional skill sets we got to know how business operates we got to know how they get new clients new sales and where we might be able to help them do that using a website for us to become a great web designer we not only have to understand web design we also got understand business and sales so for today's video I've broken that into three general sections we got visibility creating action and then our end results I'm gonna break each of these down in detail show you exactly what they mean and get those concepts really nailed in so you can start putting this to use right away first up visibility hugely important concept we can build the best website in the world but if nobody's using it it's going to be totally pointless so whenever we look at a potential client whenever we pitch our services we got to make sure that it's gonna be part of some larger Sales System it's not just gonna be the website there's got to be some way to get people onto that website and start putting it into use think of this like building a racing car you build a best racing car in the world you give it to somebody but they never put a driver in it they never put it on the track it's never gonna win any records it's never gonna get any results just like a website if we hand that off to a business or a person and they just have nobody on there nobody using it nobody's seeing the content that you've produced it's never going to get any results for them no matter what the price is it's gonna be a complete waste of time and money so when we look for potential clients when potential clients approach us we have to make sure that this website's going to be part of some sort of marketing sales system we can either create that further and I'm going to show you some options or they already have something in place if they want us to create it if they don't have anything at the moment there's a few things that we can do so we can do SEO we can make this website over time show up higher on Google search results so that more people will come across it true natural searches true Google if they really want some fast results and they have the money to spend on it we can also do AdWords we can set up an AdWords system so that when people search on Google our different search engines our results our website comes up at the very top but that actually isn't always necessary sometimes businesses have their own marketing systems maybe they rent out billboard space maybe live ads in the radio they might have a TV commercial there might be in the newspaper maybe they have a lot of trucks that drive around with their website printed on the side they might have some way of just naturally driving customers to a website that doesn't have to do with Google it doesn't have to do with search results and that's completely fine also they could have really good word-of-mouth a lot of people might really like this business they start sharing it naturally start talking about it telling their friends hey check out this website check out this business another way could be that the business is linked from a lot of different websites so Martin show up on Google so well but it's talked about in a lot of different places maybe it's on a lot of forums maybe it's some some other directory websites maybe it's just linked from a few Authority websites and this is a way that they could be getting a lot of traffic a lot of users naturally of course as well you've got social media this could be something that's shared a lot on Facebook on Instagram on Twitter or it could also be that they're running ads on those platforms as well but in either case it could be that this website's getting a lot of users not from Google not from other websites but just off social media you'll see that a lot nowadays with certain sorts of products certain sorts of services the final one that I've listed is material so maybe this company has produced something that's out in the real world that helps bring people back to the website could be a t-shirt with the website on it it could be a book could be pamphlets leaflets whatever now the important concept to understand is this has to already exist or it has to be something that they're willing to pay us to create has to be one or the other or maybe even both but it definitely can't be neither nobody's visiting this website doesn't matter what we build doesn't matter how good it is it's just never gonna get any results so if a business who potentially wants a website if they don't have marketing out there in the real world if they're not renting billboards if they don't have you know t-shirts directing people back if they're not showing up on Google if people aren't talking about them if just nobody knows about this business nobody knows about the website then a long way investing in the website they also have to invest in a way for people to find that website they either have to pay you to set up SEO Adwords or to get you out there promoting it on social media or another websites but they can't expect from just having a good website to have people finding it and using it those are two different things this is a really important concept to get into your mind from the very very beginning you need to work with businesses that are not only willing to invest in the website but are also making sure that people are actually going to get on there put it to use and hopefully potentially take some end-result action as well okay so once we've made sure that people are actually going to use this website we can start focusing on the website itself so we got this class magic wizard here which is gonna be you creating all this action from this amazing website that you're gonna build so this channel in general is gonna break down exactly how to achieve that using different formatting with your design using copywriting using certain images writing styles call-to-action different forms etc that's gonna be a much bigger topic that I'll cover in much detail but for now as an overview we need to realize that we have all these different people coming to the website for a certain reason and we need to start turning that into some form of action for these people to potentially take so how do we do this good question this is the skill set that you're gonna want to develop as a web designer a lot of web designers like to focus on design on coding on certain features of a website which is fine but to get those end results to really have this website producing the most that it can for your clients it really has to be built in such a way to turn all this potential energy into some sort of action to some sort of end result so there's certain ways you can set it up to certain things you can focus on that are really going to improve the chances of that happening that's why I've created this YouTube channel that's what I'm hoping to teach you over time is different ways to turn potential clients into actual sales actual results actual new customers new leads for the people that are paying you to design this website so your ability to do this the better you can do this the more people you can turn from just a casual browser on a web site into an actual paying customer for the person you're building the website for that's gonna justify your money your wages as a web designer the best web design is out there can capture as much people's attention as possible get them interested get them motivated to take some form of action and then turn that into an end result we're gonna cover those results in a second but that is the core skill set here that is what you should be working on your ability to make something that turns all these potential people at different stages of the buying cycle they might be highly interested they might be somewhat interested they might just be casually browsing trying to capture as much as you can educate these people inform them get their interest get them motivated get them having some form of desire and then turning that into an end action and end result so that's why I got this cool wizard character because I think this is a pretty cool skill set you can turn potential buyers into actual paying customers just true what you have in that website true great copywriting great design different images different layouts etc so pretty cool skill set to have when you see it done properly it's really really impressive and there's a lot of different things happening behind the scenes even on a very simple website that you might not realize so Third Point is the end result what does this all actually mean what are we actually working towards what does a client actually want to see from a great website so if you asked someone what main result would somebody want when they build a website for a business their probable answer is going to be more sales that's definitely the case no business is going to turn down more cash for but there's also a lot of other different goals that a business might be trying to get true having a better website I've listed a few here like getting better leads better sorts of customers maybe targeting a new niche that their business didn't target before maybe it's better productivity having a website with systems in place that can reduce the workload for their actual staff so a classic example is a better contact forum that grabs a lot of different information and then that saves people doing that later offline another thing could be they're trying to improve their company image maybe they're trying to look more prestige maybe they're trying to look more friendly maybe they're trying to break into a new market and they need to create that image from scratch whatever exactly their goals are they're gonna have some form of goals it's our job as a web designer to discover what these are discover how important each one is and then how we can produce that result using the website again our ability to do this is going to justify us charging you know quite a large amount because in return they're getting so much more if they're getting this huge amount of value from the work that we produce this is what separates great web designers who make a lot of money from people who really struggle to sell their services to get new clients to get the word out there the difference is one group of people are making a website that produces an end result that has a huge impact for the business at har ism the other people are just designing websites that look kind of cool but they're not thinking about this bigger picture stuff and there's no real great end result from their work of course it's hard to charge money when there's just nothing in return for the people who are potentially gonna hire you one last concept to keep in mind is a website not only increases certain things but it also reduces other things that a client might want to just cut down on or remove altogether things like waste of time maybe they're always telling clients certain information that could be on the website instead if their services their location their opening hours have certain things work about their product or their service maybe they're getting the wrong clients reaching out and contacting them people who they just can't cater to people they can't help the good websites going to reduce those clients even thinking that this business is suitable and things like repetitive tasks what we just talked about a few moments ago getting information from the website that reduces people doing an offline or having content or systems on the website that reduces action elsewhere for that business guys here's the cool thing if you can get this in your mind if you can start putting this to use from the very beginning you're going to explode your business as a web designer businesses want to work with people to understand these concepts who can produce real end results and not just a website that looks cool but does nothing keep this in mind REE watch this video if you need to from the very very beginning as you learn web design you need to also start understanding how a website can really help a business and how it links into other parts of their sales system guys thanks for watching this one hopefully it wasn't too advanced any questions any comments suggestions feedback leave them in the comments below I will write back to you hit subscribe if you want I'm gonna have a lot more content on this coming up soon I'm gonna take you from complete beginner stages the whole way up making your fresh sale starting to grow your web design business thanks for watching HOW TO MAKE A WEBSITE FOR FREE For those of you who wished you had your own stunning, professional-looking website or have one that doesn't really thrill you, I'm going to show you where and how you can create one for free at Wix.com. Wix has an amazing tool that fills it for you automatically it's called their 'artificial design intelligence'. In addition Wix allows you to edit any of your website's sections with its intuitive drag-and-drop editor, and other built-in features using Wix makes building an awesome-looking website simple easy and fun. Go to their website at Wix.com. You can create a website for free, or upgrade to a premium version. But with the free version, you get pretty much everything you need to begin. Click start now, if you're new to Wix you'll need to sign up. Type in your email then type in a password The first page asks what kind of website you want to create. for this example I'll build a website for an online consulting company, so I'll click business you can build your website two different ways one is with the Wix editor which is a great drag-and-drop editor, or we can work with Wix ADI. ADI is wix's artificial design intelligence. I suggest starting with ADI, since it does most of the 'heavy lifting' automatically and then edit your site in the Wix editor later. Adi works by asking us a bunch of different questions. For example, it asks what kind of business do you want to create a website for. I'll type in consulting Wix automatically populates a list of types of consulting companies I'll click consulting firm, then click next. It then asks does your website need one of the following features. If your website doesn't need any of them just click skip or next you can always add any of them later if you want next we'll type in the name of our business. I'll type in James consulting and click next. Then it asks you where your business is located. You can skip it or type in its address and click next. ADI is gathering existing information about your company on the internet so for example if you already have a public Facebook site it'll scroll that site and add your information however since this is a fictional site, we'll skip this section next it asks us to check our company's info if you want to upload a photo, just click on this icon or we can add it later. I'll add our company's email address and phone number. Then, click next. Now the ADI software is putting all of our information together and is starting to build our site. Next, we'll pick a theme or general look for our site. For now I'll click classic, and then click continue ADI will begin to create your website's initial design section by section, so just sit back and relax. The purple dot is ADI's eyes cursor and is automated it found some high resolution images and text on the internet that applies to the type of company your website represents keep in mind you can replace your images and text at any time in the Wix editor for now it's just showing you how your website will look overall I'll click this button on the lower right which opens this list of options that will guide you to create your full web site. let's preview the site. Click preview at the top you'll notice that they installed a cool effect with the photo called parallax, you can change that or any other aspect of your website later if you want, after previewing it click the blue X button. If you want to change the entire website design just click the next line in the list. Adi asks you if you like it to choose a new design for you or if you'd like it to show you how to do it yourself I suggest to click show me how, because it's easier to change or reverse any changes that are made click site design the one that says customize is the classic theme that we already picked so for example if we click the elegant theme ADI automatically revises your design to reflect the elegant theme to preview it click keep it preview your site and preview at the top. As you can see it's a similar layout but with different text and colors if you want to go back to your first design click the blue X button to end the preview and change the entire website design click site design click the classic theme and just like that we're back to where we want to be we'll keep this next we have the option to change is the color theme I'll click on the customize theme, and click here to open the color palettes. There are dozens to choose from for example, let's click this one immediately. It shows you how your website would look with this color palette. If you want to go back to the black white and gray palette that ADI originally chose for us, just click on that color bar and instantly it reverts back to that palette. I'll click keep it the next option allows you to change your website's fonts in this case since I like the fonts we already have I'll just skip this option if you want to change the layout of your sections, we'll click here and click show me how click on the section you'd like to change. Click this button to see the layout options. You can scroll on the left to check out your various layouts click on the one you like the best to see it apply to your website then click keep it. Next, we can edit the specific content of a section. Select a section and click edit. Here you can edit any of its info. For example, if we want to add a map location for our business, just check map and just like that, ADI instantly adds the map to our design. When you're done editing the content, click the button on the lower right and we're done with that section. If you want to add another section or page click the next two options. However since I don't want to add either of them, I'll skip them I'll click this button to end our edits. To see our website click publish to use the free Wix domain. Click publish and continue to view your new site click here. We've created a beautiful effective website in just about ten minutes or so. If you want to edit anything on your website, open back the Wix ADI page and click done. Click site on the top and click go to editor when this page opens, click go to the editor, which breaks out of the ADI technology. If for example we want to change this background, just click on it and click change strip background. Immediately, a panel pops up that gives you multiple choices of new backgrounds. You can also find an image or video by clicking the respective buttons here. When you click image, a page opens giving you options to find images from your computer, social images, free images from Wix and images from big stock. When you click video you can choose one from your computer or one for free from Wix. Just click on the category, and click on the thumbnail of the video to place it instantly into your website. click the X to close out of the window. If you want to change text no problem just click on the text click Edit text and edit it. To go to another section click pages home, and click another section to edit it. When you're done building your website click publish at the upper right, and click save Changes. You can either choose to upgrade to connect with your own branded domain or, connect with wix's free domain. If you want to view your site click view site. I hope this is giving you a good start to explore and have fun creating a website using Wix. If you have any questions, just contact Wix and they'll be happy to walk you through it. 10 REASONS YOU NEED A WEBSITE let's talk about the internet so literally everyone is on the internet all of the time it doesn't matter whether it's buying things learning a new skill watching TV making friends we can almost do anything on the internet nowadays so having an online presence on the Internet is almost a must if you want to get anywhere and unfortunately social media has become so noisy that it's become increasingly harder to actually make an impact and stand out online so how do we get around this how do we make an even bigger impact than the 2 billion people that have Facebook accounts how do you stand out online. JOBS FOR WORK AT HOME I wanted to share with you some professions that you can learn online and professions that allow you to work at home online in the past four years the online part of my income has started growing really really fast so I just wanted to share some ideas how you can do this too .I'm going to talk about professions that you can either start doing right now or take a two-three week or maybe like two month course online and start working profession number one translating what I thought about translating it's better to translate from English into your own language so for example if you're Spanish you can translate from English into Spanish because this is what's most in-demand because if you're a Spanish speaker it wouldn't be the best idea to translate from Spanish into English without proper like really good education unless you're bilingual but if you know good English if you're upper intermediate and with some help of the dictionary you would be able to translate into Spanish this is awesome a great website to look for different job postings is upward com and I went on up work and checked what are the jobs for Spanish speakers and you can find tasks that are worth 500 1000 dollars and imagine if you are from a poor country poorer compared to America what you make online is actually a lot of my translation translator selected profession number two or like task number two is to edit text again this is coming from my own experience if you're a native speaker if you speak English and you want to help other people like there are so many people studying English and using it every day who are not native speakers and there's so many emails being written in English with so many mistakes there are so many essays being written for American British Australian Canadian universities there is so many resumes being written in English and all of those people need help this is why we started fluent Express we're a native speaker instantly corrects your attacks in English and if you're a native speaker or like super advanced English language learner you can go ahead and sign up the email will be here this is Joe who managed his fluent Express and he would be able to unboard you if you're qualified enough again if you're an English native speaker so many jobs they can do online starting with teaching Chinese kids English for example because this is a huge market editing texts and just helping foreigners with their English just the converse practice English online activity number three software testing and this is something I found out about when I moved to Silicon Valley and the thing is with software testing you only need like maybe three or four months to learn it some people take a year but again it depends on how good you are with the computer but in order to start learning QA testing you just need to be good with computer know how to search internet know how to create folders you know know how to use word in Excel and people make so much money like this is a number one profession in Silicon Valley for those who don't have computer science education and want to do something with tech because the salaries are pretty high and again as I mentioned you can learn it pretty fast so for example there is this burden of computer school started by a fellow Russian he started at 20 years ago he actually moved to Silicon Valley in the 90s and realized this is something he could do and then he started doing it started a school they had more than a thousand students from all over the world and they have different programs like the only loss only costs a thousand dollars and you learn everything about software testing they'll also help you with your resume and if you're here in Silicon Valley and we want to do it offline you pay forty five hundred dollars and you get the offline full time course and internship in a local company so you get work experience and I checked on Glassdoor and by the way Glassdoor is one of the best resources to find how much people are earning and QA engineer remote QA engineer so you can work from home makes sixty three thousand dollars a year which is again like if I were in Russia and I did this sixty-three thousand dollars we were like a lot of money I'm telling you a profession number four is a landing page designer there are so many small businesses out there and there are so many tools to create landing pages like Wix.com instagram. com page so you basically do not need to know how to code you just drag and drop things and I've done so many landing pages for língua trip when I first did it it took me like maybe two hours when I did it last time two weeks ago it took me thirty minutes because I know everything so once you master that skill you can just do you know till ending pagers the day and I checked out a web site called fiverr.com it started as a website where you could get any job done for five dollars but now they've transformed their idea a little self the prices range from $5 to you know hundreds and there are different postings of people who can create a landing page for you and the price ranges from $50 to $100 so again if you make like five landing pages per day you can make $500 again depends on your skills students on how much you like it and I think you need to have some of like taste for ux/ui the design how everything looks like then you just help people save their time and small businesses can concentrate on selling and you can help them create the website web designers the next profession the next skill copywriting if you love texts then listen carefully every business is now concentrated on creating content cuz content is King content is how you find clients content is how you educate them first there is a huge demand for good texts for different web sites in different languages like lingua trade was translated into six languages so we need tax in all of them there are Instagram bloggers and Instagram is this platform which started as a platform where you just post pictures and now is transforming to a platform where you post a picture and you have to give some content like you have to write a good text and give people some value and these stacks are not coming from nowhere they not just oh here's the text it's really a lot of effort like I'm not a writer and I would spend like maybe half an hour per Instagram post just for the text and there is an additional photo part so it takes a lot of time I would not be able to write all of the articles for a website so we constantly look for good copywriters and there are constantly thousands of companies out there looking for good copywriters and Instagram bloggers like not every single blogger can write good texts well Kinsey copywriter the next video editor somebody who I started to look for maybe when I was six months into YouTube because first again I had no education in view at nothing I just filmed a video with my iPhone took my iPhone open the iMovie and try to crop it and you know what try and do a video in iMovie it comes out so good the the program is really the the soft is really easy if really easy to understand really easy to work at home with and then you get magic so there's so many people who are starting YouTube blogs and professional video companies charge oh my god I just realized they charge like fifteen thousand dollars per video you don't have to do that although if you're professional you can totally go that way but if you just want some freelance income and wanna help people edit some videos like beginner YouTube bloggers fifteen dollars an hour twenty dollars an hour on average it takes like five to six hours to edit a video again you're gonna work on create your portfolio and you know another thing for everyone doesn't matter what job you're looking at start with creating a portfolio on some of the websites and you can do some jobs for free maybe you have clients maybe you don't maybe you're just studying out do some jobs for free like for a review so you can get a five star rating maybe like three or four of them and then organic orders will start coming in some of the soft for video editing that I would advise iMovie then Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas this is what we youtubers use a lot the next photo editing I just found this blogger millions of subscribers he teaches you how to edit photos so they can look really really good so all you need to start photo edit you can actually start with the easiest soft like that is free vsco Lightroom is free for for the iPhone what else there you Snapseed all of the apps and again there are so many Instagram bloggers there are so many companies that are starting Instagram and if you would help them make it look more professional better with a better layout better colouring they would hire you a hundred percent so again you can start experimenting with your own Instagram because I guess Instagram would be the platform where you would sell your services and I would advise you to make your Instagram look good and then try to DM but on Instagram reach out to them and say hey this isn't how my profile looks like I see that you're trying to sell through Instagram but your photos are not really well don't say that tell them you can improve their performance by 30 or 40 percent and you're willing to do it for free for a week again you're doing this review and for your experience and then you will just start collecting money basically 30% of our employees of my team came from this kind of thing when they just reach out on social media helped me for free and I realize they're really good and I just hire them so this is my advice for you on how to make the first steps I use the magic of photo editing software if you realize that a photo editing you love it video editing you love it maybe blogging is something you would love to do and vlogging is this thing that doesn't have a limit so on all of the other jobs that I'm mentioning here yes you are limited by your time but your skills etc with YouTube once you post a video it can go viral and you can get millions of views so there is no limit one of my friends yeah 700,000 followers on his YouTube channel and his videos get over a million views every time you post some of his videos get like 50 million views he does kids content and he makes $40,000 a month it lives a happy life it pays a lot of taxes though and yeah enjoys his life in Florida and does really nothing like two videos a month he understands that this is not a job that he could maintain throughout his life but this is a great source of income he's in his 30s then enjoys life makes some savings speaking of pimples let's roll so if you have this urge to talk about something don't postpone like the best time to start is now take out your phone and start recording boast a couple of videos you don't have to start making income straight away like I got my first hundred dollar check from YouTube when I was six months into my Russian Channel and I had like 10,000 followers it wouldn't start coming in really fast but once you start growing the checks will be bigger and bigger but you cannot start blogging just for the sake of making money cuz you know gonna love it but if you love to talk go ahead YouTube is the best platform you can also start at Instagram it pay for the views but again you can sell stuff through Instagram later or get paid ads see your library another job that requires no education at all just basic knowledge of computer and research skills some things that I've used a lot called virtual assistant back in 2015 when we just came to Silicon Valley and decided to start fundraising we needed a list of investors who invested in education so I went to an upwork.com looked for virtual assistants found that girl in Thailand who charged I don't remember but was like five dollars a per hour and she walked for ten hours I paid her $50 she came up with a list of sixteen masters who were really happy and I also realized that if I hired somebody in California in California the minimum wage per hour is fifteen dollars I would have paid a lot a lot more and this is why so many people in America outsource the tasks outsourcing college it's a brilliant idea because they pay less but at the same time when you're in a country with lower income you make so much money actually you make a lot more that you would have made if you worked offline in a you know regular 9:06 job by the way for all of the jobs that are mentioned here you don't have to quit your job you do your 906 or sorry either your 9:00 to 5:00 come back home eat your dinner and dedicate a couple more hours to something that you're really passionate about something that you love and something that might transform your life and create a whole new career for you assistant yeah virtual okay and the last but not the least something really particular something that is not really widely spoken about I picked this idea from one of my favorite bloggers you got your perspective and I realized I've actually done it already this is called like starting a small a based or what he's just doing if you live in a country with garage sales like America has a lot of garage sales you go there people sell their things like one or two dollars and they are worth a lot more I'll tell you my story 2015 we moved to Mountain View we had $2,000 for everything we had a one-bedroom apartment three people and I had to buy all the furniture like everything for apartment for $2,000 soand on a garage sale and people were selling like all the kitchen utensils for one or two dollars I got a lot of them brought them home and then in six months we needed to move out and we went back to Russia so I started selling all of that stuff and actually sold then with a markup like fifty one-hundred percent markup and this is what you can do so Gary does this serious way he just goes on Saturday buys a lot of stuff and then resells it on eBay and he says you can make like 500 1000 extra dollars a week I heard it garage sales said that was it from you guys I hope you enjoyed this content if this was useful for you and you think you're gonna apply some of the device in your real life please please please like this video leave a comment below if you've ever tried a freelance job and what it was because maybe it will be a great idea for my next video so your freelance so waiting for your comments if you're not says yes subscribe to this channel hit subscribe and again all you need to start is your computer maybe your phone sometime one or two hours and most important desire to make more money to live a better life and to do more cool stuff so you have everything now go ahead and start working. I want work./// How to create a website (another form)// Start the new google sites STORY OF CONTENT MARKETING If you look in your email inbox, you look at Facebook, you look at Twitter, you look at Pinterest, you look at Instagram, you look at any of that you will see like literally adjacent, here's something from a company. And then here's something from your mom. There's been too much content forever, AwesomeContentCode . You know, since Gutenberg invented the printing press, there's been people who haven't had the time to read the Bible, right? So content marketing is simply a, you know, it's a nice term. And lots of people consultants go around saying, Oh,look, I know what this is. But it's been hot and important, and impactful and effective for over a century now. It's like, Whoa, somebody in the market who isn't just shouting about their products, they're actually doing some cool stuff for their, for their customers. Well, you might be surprised to hear that Ithink it's very powerful. Right?Soit's, it's one of those things that I think is really, you know, Seth Godin has said that content is really the only marketing that's left. And I absolutely believe that it's, it's really the only way that a business going forward is going to differentiate itself in a very crazy, noisy marketplace. But until you get to the real heart of it, which is where is the customer, what's the customer involved in, and what's the customer get out of this? I think it's essentially kind of a,who cares?Right now, while we sit in this meeting, mass selling using all the spectacular resources of sound pictures, and animated cartoons in color is helping to sell great masses of people in the way they like to be sold.brands and branding are really an artifact of the 1960s 70s and 80s. That's when we had big mass media, television dominated everything, family all gathered around and evening watch TV advertising came on. And what we did is we created commonality, in other words, the family next door, so the same television commercials that I saw, that's where you found out about new products or services in the marketplace, that's where you found out about new brands that might be great for your home, or great for your car, whatever. So marketing for a long time has been about interruption. You know, I have to interrupt your day, by putting on a television commercial when you're watching the game, or watching your favorite drama, or I have to put in an advertisement for when you're thumbing through the magazine that will cause you to stop or reading a newspaper that will cause you to stop or God forbid, call you at home. And with an unwanted message, pushing it out, pushing it out pushing it out. And it's always been that way. I mean, that's the history of marketing. Ad go back to what the four P's of marketing, product, price, place and promotion, all in the control of the marketing organization, we decide what products we're going to make, how we're going to make, how we're going to price them, how we're going to sell them, where we're going to sell them all those things. Now, I've created all that. And I've got to push that out to you. And I've got to convince you to buy. So it's been primarily about persuasion. It's one where we actually go out in some persuasive way to try and convince someone that our product or service is better. We describe value, basically, that's the classic marketing training. If you look at how marketers have been trained in university, since really time began, it's how do we actually describe the value of the product or service we're doing in an ever clever way?And how do you do that you basically have levers the pull, one of those levers was advertising and you could you basically bought advertising space. And you knew that for a certain amount of investment, you could you could expect a certain amount of return. good days, you did better on bad days, you did worse. But over time you you learned the the metrics that could help you achieve that.Marketers fell in love with mass media. Because at that time, it was probably the best way to market it was just blossoming where you've had newspapers and magazines and television that could reach so many people and we weren't used to thatsomebody else owns the audience. So usually, that was traditional publishing, so perhaps a newspaper or a magazine. And so to connect with those people, you had to go through some intermediary, you had to figure out a way to get in front of that audience. And the publishing industry at the time was very much you know, a man with two lovers if you like, he had the he had the audience on one side, who he dearly dearly loved, but he actually really loved the the advertisers just as just as passionately if not more when they came calling right. So that whole that whole dynamic was really founded on the principle of distribution he owns the publisher owns the distribution power at that point.Advertising was fabulous it getting our attention, right, this burst of disruption. And then what do they do with that attention? Absolutely nothing. It just hung there. Now, that was great when you had to watchit. Companies, corporations, media had all the power, because we only had so many channels. And consumers had only so many ways to get their information with theadvent of the Internet, that disappeared, and suddenly the advertiser and the audience can find each other or rather the, the publisher and advertiser essentially competing through the same channels to try to reach the audience with AwesomeContentCode . So that's, that's really where brands have come into their own, where they've realized, well, we don't have to go through a third party to reach this audience, we can actually try to achieve that directly.Instead of having to advertise in someone else's channel, I have the opportunity to create my own valuable, relevant and compelling content in our own channels to really create loyalty, build relationships directly with what we like to call subscribers, instead of going out and having to pay for that attention.Think we have to change the way we think about you know, getting access to the mind of the consumer we want to have a relationship with. And one of the best ways to do that today is through content, content marketing, I think preceded advertising. When you go back in history, the first ads really were content that was connecting with people around values, some at some point, I think in the 50s, we decided to dazzle and sparkle by talking all about ourselves instead of in terms of what they needed. As I defined content marketing, communicating with, with potential customers to drive behavior has been around, you know, forever, right for millions of years since the first caveman. So I tried to sell a rock to another caveman, right, he was creating a rock brochure. We've always had content marketing, we just different kind of iterations of it, where it's come from.If we look back in the 1800s, there were quite a few companies that were trying to figure out how to build lasting relationships with customers by not talking about their products and services. While not the oldest example in the world, my favorite example is probably john deere is the furrow magazine. My name is Bart. I'm 37 years old. I have lived on this farm my entire life. I can remember being five, six years old, we were dairy farmers at that time, and Bakit, feeding calves, bottle feeding calves. That's how we started. I bought this farm from my dad. He's the second generation about 10 years ago. And we raised corn, soybeans and wheat and we also raise beef livestock. I'd say I've been getting a furrow and reading the furrow for about five years. Now, I will say that I think the articles in the furrow are very neutral. I mean, to the point that I always wondered, is this a john deere magazine or not?The Pharaoh came along in in 1895, when our company was under the direction of john deere son, Charles, he recognized that need for for farmers to have an accurate, unbiased source of information, anything that we think farmers can can use to to improve their operations, that something is going to make it into the furrow.I try to key in on the soil health and soil fertility. fertilizers have gotten very expensive through the years and how you apply them is very important. Not only economically but also for the environment. I don't know or the company like john deere sits on on soil conservation as far as no till versus being a more conventional type. To me, I think a company like that has more to gain when people are working more ground. But you know, that's the furrow doesn't just talk about that if they do at all. I mean, it's more about the opposite of that.If you go back through the entire history of the magazine, I would be very surprised if in that editorial space, you saw the words john deere mentioned more than 15 or 20 times and that's going back 120 years, that veil of secrecy has been lifted off of marketing. People know when they are when they are being marketed to the john deere brand. Still, seal stands for something. It stands for quality It stands for for honesty, that's been a critical component of of not just the fear of success, but of of john deere success overall.Customers are really always faced with issues. What are my customers really concerned about? What issues do they have? What information are they looking for? What kind of problems do they have and how can I help them solve those problems?focus on being good to a specific audience. Most companies need to devote resources and talents towards driving In a very small, very niche audience, understand deeply the buyers that you're trying to reach the people you're trying to reach. You call them buyer personas, if you like that you're trying to reach, you need to somehow integrate yourself into things that are valuable and important to them. And you have to deliver that to them and manifest your interest, not just with words, and pretty pictures, although those are critically important. But by actually doing stuff that matters as well. I think the brands that really get it are focused on being part of the information you want to consume. They're they're focused on creating higher quality content that inspires people to buy something they didn't know they needed. That's Procter and Gamble. I mean, they're trying to sell more soap, how are they going to do that they serve, who are we targeting? We're targeting women, women are trying to build their households. What do they like? Do they like certain kinds of programming. They wanted to be entertained, they were busy, most of them were women, they were working around the house. So when they were either working, or when they had an opportunity to sit down and take a break, they wanted to be entertained, we began to go ahead and realize, let's provide them storylines, entertainment, something that will be so immersive, that they're going to come back tomorrow. And the day after that, and the day after that. So deep characters, rich characters, storylines that actually had meaning for these individuals, something that they could relate to. And this is how we got into soap opera. It was nothing that was coined within the industry, this was something that consumers began to create for themselves. And that's what they were calling them. What What is the return on investment, you know, I'm sure that there were people in the business that were asking that, you know, there, you can try to sell your story, or you can just simply tell your story. And so that's what we were doing. And the brands were doing very well, the longest running, ones that we ever produced, such as the guiding light. And as the world turns, they all started on the radio. And then come the 1950s, the invention of the television, they made that transition. We never really even started as a sponsor, we went all in, we went ahead and we started up our own production company, we were hiring them to hire the writers hire the actors. And I don't think the company ever really put any directives or you know, characters must do this, or story must do that. But it was a I think we hired creative people. And earn a Philips was someone that we worked very closely with. She is legendary in terms of writing soap operas, and she wrote for the guiding light for a number of years. So it's, it's like, Man, it's like any other business that PNG is in. We want to hire good people that know what they can do. And let them loose and let them build that business. And that's exactly what Ernie Phillips and others did.I don't think there's ever been a hack for that. Right? It's, that's the bizarre part of this. of this business. That is more art than science. There's no way around needing to have talent. Good journalists have to have it. Good. screenwriters have to have it, you have to know a good story with you see what, that's something that publishers have always done. That's what they do really well. And when they think about their customers, they think audience, if youlook at Europe, where they call the customer, media, customer publishing, UK, I mean, back in the day, seven out of the 10 top publications on the newsstand. In the UK were custom publication were branded vehicles.Germany used to be a magazine country, we have so many publishing houses. And people read still read a lot of magazines. When you look at the newsstands at the airport or the train stations. There are still so many magazines, on sports on soccer and things like that, with a small audience. Magazines only with a circulation of 10,000 copies or so. But very, very sophisticated in editorial design and editorial content. Company companies in Germany who need to have well content for their products, I think they recognized as well. But with complex matters, complicated products and things like that. They need more content, more stories to tell about what they are doing. By 2000 2001. We had a special term we were talking about orchestration of different media channels, with mobile channels, with the internet and things like that. We as corporate publishers were the first ones to use tablet magazines for examples. We invented corporate blogs and podcasts and things like that andSo we were doing content marketing already, it was called all kinds of different things. So it was called custom publishing custom media, branded content. Customer media was big in Europe, everybody was talking about it, but they were all using a different language to talk about it. I thinkthere's a lot of things that it isn't that people think that it is that that are really too simple and too truncated, and don't get anywhere there. Lots of advertising agencies, think of things as content marketing, that aren't really content and a lot of content agencies think of things as content marketing, that aren't really marketing. And that's where I think it gets complicated. If you go up to somebody, like, say, a CEO of an organization or president and you say to them, are you better at solving people's problems than anybody else in your space? That's a question that will interest them. But if you say to them, are you the best content marketer in your space,I have no connection. If we don't start communicating this in the same way, we're never going to grow as an industry. And sort of in 2017, you know, put the flag in the ground and said, Look, we're gonna call it content marketing. And you just see this wave of momentum.Obviously, constant marketing has been around forever. But there's a whole new thing when content marketing collides with the internet. And with digital, there's been this cataclysmic shift in how customers get their information today.I remember when I was first doing content marketing, I would see stats that said there was 20 million people on the internet, like 20 million people on the internet. That's nothing. When you figure today, there's billions of people on the internet. Soif I'm trying to get their attention, I better recreating some pretty fantastic information on an ongoing basis to get their attention. I can't just rely on the very few channels that we had in the 90s. Now we've got hundreds of channels. So how are we going to get our audience's attention? One of the times I really thought wow, this is pretty cool stuff was the old Will It Blend YouTube videos. And you know, YouTube had just started YouTube had been around, I don't know, months or something like that. And Blendtec, this very smart company said, well shoot, we can use this new media to market our blenders. So they created this Will It Blend series, I'm goingto place approximately 50 marbles in a jar. And I'm going to run the ice cream cycle, which is the slowest cycle we have. This is blast, dust don't breathe this. I had no idea that this would turn into such a monster, a good monster. I've always wanted to have the fastest, the most powerful thing I could have. So for a wedding present in 1968, I got a blender. And I thought man, I can make this thing better. So for years, we've we've had the opportunity to build a blender that would not fail. We're an engineering company. So we have 40 engineers, no other Blender company has 40 engineers. I'm an engineer, which was a real problem. Because we didn't have any marketing and sales. I thought that if we had the best Blender in the world, that people would beat a path to our door. I thought if people go into a scoop shop or a smoothie shop or a coffee shop, and then people go in, they get these fabulous drinks. And they think wow, I got to get one of these blenders. I just can't wait, Hey, would you tell me what that name is? And people would literally write it down. And I thought that's a way to sell someone buy something from you and then demonstrates it in a commercial setting. That's the best way to sell it. Not so finally decided that we needed to hire a real salesperson marketing person. He saw a pile of sawdust one day and he asked them is that on the floor? And they said oh, that's just Tom, you know, blending two by twos. And he said Really? Yeah, sure. And so he buys a rotisserie chicken at Costco and he buys a six pack of coke and some marbles and Ray candles and a bunch of other goodies came to me and said here blend this stuff. And so I said okay, and so we filmed blending this. And he came to me five days later and he said Tom, we hit a home run. We have 6 million views on YouTube. And I said who toMy name is Holly Jackman, my husband and I own four Roxbury smoothie stores. carrots, celery, cucumbers, beets, ginger, lemon limes, make them taste incredible nutrition never tasted so delicious. Well, we did a lot of researching and looking around, I'd had a lot of home blenders that I wasn't as happy with. So we were very excited. When we found out about the Blendtec, we watched all the commercials, will you blend it, we saw him throwing iPods and all kinds of crazy golf balls and things in and we were very impressed. We've done on YouTube, we have I think 145 that are so and all total, not just YouTube, but other views. Around half a million views. 500 million views. I thought Wow, this is great, what an opportunity to sell a product and not have to spend any money. You know, it was wonderful. So in short order, our sales were up 1,000%. And we just kept doing videos. At this point, we used to say, hey, check out this video, I'm blending an iPhone. And oh, really, you can blend an iPhone in the blender. That's how it used to be the way it is now is people come to us and say, Hey, no question in our mind. We've been we're hooked on your videos, you know, we wantto Blendtec blender, our job is to now take that trust and not abuse it, we don't have to try to get into our customers they're already letting us in.And that's a big difference. That's really that direct connection opens up a whole new world of relationship with consumers and content is the fuel that creates that opportunity. And because we've got that connection with them around something that they value, we don't have to pay to find them because they're coming to us. They sign up for our emails, they follow us on Facebook content at this point is a form of currency that brandsthat brands that storytellers use to have a conversation with somebody, if marketers are going to use that new direct channel, just to do what they always did before, like us share this, click here, follow us watch our video and just push their product messages. It's an abuse of the channel. And in truth, they lose the channel, you know that they're now denied it because the consumer doesn't want to hear anymore. This is the same problem that was posed when the introduction of a new technology was introduced in the 19 toys that was the radio. How do people want to interact? How are companies supposed to get their messages across to their consumerschallenge in today's marketing landscape is differentiating from your competitors. What's usually happening is the production of that product or the production of that service. You know, think of offshoring for services. And you think of 3d printing for products. It's becoming commoditized. And it's being it's getting very, very difficult for product companies and services companies to differentiate against all of the other competition that's out there. Content allows you to do that. That is the biggest opportunity.Search, by definition doesn't create demand. Right? It just fulfills demand. Nobody goes to Google and says, Hey, I'd like to buy something. I don't really care what just surprise me right of socks. Okay, a hamster, whatever you think is, is appropriate. But nobody cares about your product. They're trying to solve a problem. What are my audience's pain points? What's keeping them up at night? what's important to them?So Marcus Sheridan is a great example of the power of content marketing, a couple of years ago, Marcus was the CO owner of a pool company. And it wasn't doing so well. So what Marcus decided to do was to launch a blog very simply and answer questions that his customers had based on the searches that they did, as well as conversations that he had with customers. So a couple times a week, he would just come up with a blog post that would be very specific to a question. And he talked about things that a lot of cool companies don't like to talk about. In 2008, as most people know, the market crash pool guys, this was a terrible time we went through a period of three straight weeks, we're overdrawn our bank account, I didn't know what we were going to do. I thought every consultant that I talked to said you need to close your business. And that was when I discovered what today I know to be content marketing. Alright, so this is the beginning of the next chapter of river pools and that big red shiny thing you see behind me is what is considered a mold and mold is what is used to produce a fiberglass pool. We always felt that we were going to move in this direction of manufacturing. And of course, that's what you're seeing. Now. When we started river pools. We had two really nice stores one in Richmond, Virginia, one in Warsaw, Virginia. And they were nice, and they had tanning beds and hot tubs and pool tables and all these things. They weren't generating revenue. And I said, Okay, what can we be the best in the world that we know we can teach about fiberglass pools better than anybody else. That's our thing. Let's just focus only on fiberglass pools, it's forget the whole, we got to have a building to feel like we've accomplished things, the edifice complex. And so we got rid of those retail stores, we got out of the leases early, we paid the, you know, we paid the fees, and all those things, because we said, Now we have a focus. So we moved into this big warehouse. And today, the way people view your building, it's what is the information they see, and it's what they feel on a computer screen. And then he saw that we can actually bring people to the site for free by doing what he likes to do best, which is really is teach.Let's get everybody on board. Let's get everyone involved. Everyone in this company is a teacher. Now let's do it.We learned to think like the, like the consumer. And in doing that, we saw their questions. We asked the questions ourselves, we would be on an appointment. And a question would come up. And the first thing we would think was, wow, we didn't know we haven't read written about that yet. Or Wow, that would make a great video to force me to kind of have to step up and learn how to write and learn how to learn this whole new skill set,we were onto something within about six months of, of producing content. On the Liverpool site,we we've developed a nationwide brand. So we were contacted by people from all around the world and all around the country. On a daily basis.I knew the consumer wanted to learn about pools, fine,I want to give it to them. Why not become the Wikipedia of fiberglass swimming pools, which is what we became people are going to be very new, they're going to be vetting me, they're going to be coming to your website, they're going to be coming there and saying I want to feel good about my decision, I want answers to my questions, I want to get a sense for this company, that's going to happen as long as we have this thing called the internet. The moment we stopped saying we're pool builders and started saying, We are the best teachers in the world about fiberglass pools, and we happen to install them as well. That was one of the most prosperous Days of Our Lives. The consumer has incredible amounts of information. marketers are not accustomed to that marketers are accustomed to control controlling the system controlling the activities. And that's I think what creates the problem, marketers can't give up control. They don't want to give up control. They don't want to give it away.I think marketing is broken. To be honest, I think, you know, if you're a marketer, today, you're stuck in what I call cmo pizza, you essentially have a fixed budget, that is your pizza every single year. And you just keep slicing it in more and more ways, right? You've got your SEO budget, your PPC budget, your I don't know even the acronyms to add, right. But you end up with this giant pizza slice a million different ways, hoping to have a bigger impact than you did last year, the idea of the marketer as knowledge worker, were being busy isn't the same as being successful, which is the way we've really equated jobs for so long. And this traditional organization of the marketing department is as new technologies. And as new channels come along, what we do is we throw a team at it, we throw a new process at itin the same old hierarchy. You can approach content marketing as a program, or you can approach it as a culture programs, they live and then they die. They are forced, they're not enjoyed typically, typically, but a culture becomes who you are. We're seeing this transformation of marketing departments that were set up long ago. In those mass media days, they've transformed into publishing departments. And we've really seen that and it's a big struggle for large enterprises. Because you have to dismantle what we built over the past 30 4050 years, the brands who get it have transformed the brand, they've become something else. And part of it is from letting go of this idea of you know, we own everything about the brand. And trusting that if you engage a whole lot and give some of these brand values to your customers, something good happens. And something good that you can even predict.Yes, around Red Bulls an amazing brand.Well, certainly there's the Red Bull example. And they're the poster child of content marketing these days.I think from the very beginning, Red Bull was a storytelling brands I I spent six years at Red Bull, we were a marketing team. And actually, I guess most of the content activities came from the communications function within the marketing team. We used content as a tool to tell our stories and to show people the amazing things that we were doing and the great athletes we worked with. A lot of the things that we did at Red Bull were in the action sports realm. So that was super visual and spectacular. And it just made sense to capture that and share that with the world. Perhaps a little arrogantly, we felt that the mainstream media weren't particularly good at filming and photographing the kind of sports and things that we were involved in. So we took ownership of that. at Red Bull, we were always told to focus on the audience and what was important to them and what made them passionate about their scene about their sport about their favorite athletes, and really think about them as individuals and not really worry too much about how they all crossed over. So I think that sort of single mindedness, and focus on quite a few audiences was one of the things that put us ahead that we were able to say what would a BMX i think is awesome about this BMX event, rather than trying to think about what would a youth aged 16 to 22 think about this BMX event, they target people through their passions, whether it's music, or sports, or culture, these these areas have rules, they have stories, they have stars, and Red Bull pays a huge amount of respect to those scenes and those audiences and they don't teach the treat them like demographics. They treat them like the passionate people that they are, and they give them what they want. at Red Bull, we felt like we had an actual role to play and something that we could contribute to these scenes. And we're always looking for ways to help progress, create new things help facilitate collaboration. And it felt really good to be adding something into into these scenes rather than just taking out and I think that was core to the way that people felt about us as a brand operating in these spaces. When I started at Red Bull, there was a huge amount of scope and free range, we were in each of the markets absolutely entitled to do whatever we wanted to do, of course with a huge commitment to quality. As the Red Bull media house took shape. The whole company began to professionalize its media operations from legals and contracts and licensing through to production quality, frame rates and delivery. So there was a massive undertaking to get ready to become a global media company, rather than a brand that was producing a lot of great content. When you first start getting serious about content marketing, then you really start with appointing someone or understanding the needs to be a custodian of the audience's viewpoint within the organization, you've got to have tremendous buy in top to bottom, that's key, you've got to have a central organizer, that Chief Content Officer, whatever you want to call that person, a Content Manager, and you've got to start off on the same page, they need to makea lifestyle change, and they have to swear off spending money on the stuff that doesn't work. And they have to say to themselves, every single day, I'm going to create content every single day for an hour or two or an entire day. Or if I'm a big company 10 people's entire days have to create content full timeyou ever look around at all the incredible technology in our world and think to yourself, how in the name of science does all this work leads to embarrassing de Thurston and this is GE masterclass. When we certainly when we started producing a lot of this content, it meant that we had to get into our factory floors. And it meant that we had to get into our labs and they're doing, you know, they're doing very important stuff in there. And so a lot of the culture change and, and the kind of learning and evolving and came at those points used to be that that it could be very tricky to get onto a factory floor or to get to a customer site. And now our customers call us sometimes and say we have this great story, we'd love to do another production with you.I do believe that it is a practice it is a skill that brands are going to have to get good at it is something that whether they outsource the execution of it, you know whether they actually develop the talent within to actually shoot video, create imagery, I think is not as important as the business getting good at managing a marketing process that is at its heart, a media company like process. It's interesting what some of these large brands are doing now around content marketing, if you look at Marriott and their creation of their content studio is they're putting a flag in the ground and saying, look, we are a media company. And our goal is to be the leading informational provider in the travel industry, they've set it and now they're putting the construct together to make that happen.I have a presentation that I give here globally called publish or perish, right? The idea if we don't start publishing, we're gonna not gonna be around or not be relevant. It's the idea that today is a brand we're all really media companies that goes back to all of us are media companies. So the Marriott global creative and content studio is focused on developing content, digital projects, we've got TV projects, we've got film projects. We've got stuff in animation. Great storytelling comes from people who know how to tell stories and the creative community. Right. So we partnered directly with mainly influencers across YouTube, Instagram and other channels, but also traditional talent and Hollywood producers, directors writers, to create content for us.Look around, look at these people. They come in, they go out and we make the phoneSo the biggest project we've done today is to Bellman. It's a short film, we partner with a group in Los Angeles called substance overhype. They are a hardcore group, they do music, dance, motion music, it's all their thing, created a 15 minute film where a set is the hotel. It's just naturally part of the story. It's never an integration, it's not about, here's your key card, thank you for checking in. Right, that does not exist, you just naturally see it in its environment. When you let creators, give them parameters and let them do what they do best storytelling, they'll figure out an authentic way. It's when it becomes ugly programming is when a brand says, Well, can you put my logo on there four times and stop it on the screen for three seconds. Content Marketing is not overnight, you know, it's a marathon. And so you have to really educate folks that, you know, it's not gonna happen overnight, you have to scale this. And you have to really have that whole content ecosystem built? And how are you using social channels, everything else to drive back to wherever you want that center of your universe to be,like a halfway decent human being. brands have to be about more than themselves. It's humans, it's humans dealing with humans,we forget that right? Instead of trying to be real time, yougot to be real, that single minded focus on your audience and what they love and what they really care about, and trying to offer value in that space is something that anybody any brand can do.And the rules by which we play by our human behavior, right? Every organization I don't care what you sell is p2p. It's person to person, people to people. It's not stinking, b2b, b2c, b2b G, which is business to government. But the philosophies of becoming incredibly helpful being a great teacher listener, communicator, they don't change, I don't care what it is that you're on what it is that you're doing. So it's not about size. It's not about what you do. It's about a mentality and a culture.USC bank is one of the largest banks in Denmark. And for years, they were paying a lot of money for sponsorships. And the they didn't want to do that anymore. They didn't know if that was a good use of, of their resources. So the created use of bank TV, targeting to financial consumers, and they started to answer questions on this video channel about how consumers can save for retirement, they can get checking accounts, savings accounts, do things with their lives financially. And they were starting to share information like a media company, wouldwe say that if you can't rely on the media, you have to become a media. And that's basically what we what we think my nameis. Rasmus Nielsen, I work as a host and journalist here at jusco Bank. Well, since it started in 2006, we started doing internal communication, on TV, and then 2008, we started also sending to our customers. The hard part is not to produce the content, it's to get the right idea for the content. And then to get the big Yes, from the CEO in the company. So you're getting in there. We have had our CEO call us and say, Hmm, that wasn't my kind of story. But but that's alright, I'm still here. So. So but but you need to have that kind of CEO that things are right, I believe some freedom, and I won't intervene. But of course, he will have an opinion. But he believes that if you tell it as a journalist, people will believe it, and people will, they will like it. It's been a long process about getting where we are now, because people are very skeptic about this. But every time we do a story where people say, Oh, that's actually what we were talking about in the canteen. So, so great that you guys are talking about it also, even though it's it's kind of a bad story for us. But But people are talking about it anyway. So so if we don't talk about it, it will just, you know, grow bigger and bigger in theorganization, you earn the respect from the audience, you have to get good stories that go into people's hearts. And when you get when you reach people hearts, they will do the right things with the brain, think like a like a publisher, produce content that is relevant for your audience, you have to believe that this is the right way to go. And I don't think it's just the right way. It's the way you haveto go. Having thatreal respect for content as a as a thing unto itself. It will reward you if you invest in it. But it's not something that can be done cheaply or easily or quickly. Thecontent business is the only part of this business that I can see credibly leading the new practice of advertising. And I'm moderately upset because not enough of us are trying to do it.Don't get tired of it. If you have the right mindset. And if you believe that just because it was done that way doesn't mean it's necessarily the right way. If you're willing to create Ate and make the rules in your own industry, you could do exceptional things. Story of Content Marketing WORKING FROM HOME. I WANT WORK. Working from home the new norm as the corona virus spreads well employees ever return to the office or has a new ear adorned and what will it take to adopt remote working long term this is inside story .I'm is a tan pajamas a laptop and a comfortable couch at home that's today's work environment for millions of people around the world it was a far-fetched dream until the pandemic made it a reality companies have been forced to embrace remote working to limit the spread of kovat 19 but that's if the job doesn't require you to be there in person for those who can working from home could become permanent Twitter for example is going to give that option to workers who wish to do so other firms are working out how to reopen offices while maintaining social distancing the way we work is being revisionist even into the future and post pandemic offices might look radically different than those of today working from home is not a one-size-fits-all it's mostly for knowledge workers with computer based and telecommunication jobs like presenters doctors aerospace and defense workers grocery clerks cleaners and many other employees while they must show up for work not everyone finds doing their jobs from home a luxury though more than 90% of young tech fluent US workers have experienced difficulties working remotely that's according to a new workplace survey by engine insights for older workers who lack internet skills and those who live in places with limited broadband access remote work is difficult if not impossible some politicians are considering integrating the right to work from home into law Germany's labor minister who Berta Sayle said last month he'll put forward legislation later this year in an interview with German newspaper Bild AM Sonntag Heil explained that all employees should be able to request working from home where possible he's also suggested some staff could switch to a home office for a day or two each week the companies wouldn't be forced to accommodate that the minister says the number of people working remotely is estimated to have risen to 25 percent of the workforce during the crisis that's around 8 million employees let's bring in the thoughts of our guests now joining us on the show we have from Tokyo Mark Einstein he's an IT strategy advisor in Connecticut in the u.s. Hilary Jacobs she's a psychotherapist and author of it's not always depression and in rotterdam alia fennec he's a behavioral psychologist welcome to you all if I could start with Ali so what do you think we do you think we'll all employees ever return to the office as we've known it before coronavirus hit well I do think some of employees will definitely want to go back to the office it's not everyone who likes to work from home and so there will be people who just kind of missed the hustle and the bustle of the workplace and because it helps them to thrive it helps them to to be productive and a lot of them are actually facing you know though some issues around working at home effectively when they're doing remote work so definitely there'll be people that will want to go back but what I also think has happened is that there's a lot of people now that have become accustomed to working from home setups and they've seen the benefits of you know not having to commute having much more productive and efficient meetings and also being able to manage a work-life balance so I think working from home is as you mentioned as part of the new norm and will only increase as we move forward into the future interesting Hillary in the US there are companies which have already said hey their employees can continue to work from home is it too early to put a number on it yet and try and envisage what percentage of the workforce is going to remain distant yes I don't have a number just a speculation on how that will affect people how do you think it's going to affect people well the thing is that change triggers a wide variability of emotions that are what we feel is really based on a the nation of our genetics our disposition for example if we were more introverted and we like being at home and not leaving the house or if we're more extroverted and we need that to give us fuel and energy to thrive and also our life experiences affect what we feel so it may be that some people will experience a deep loss and a sadness that they that they can't go to work and other may feel quite joyous about it because they get to stay home so that surely requires employers to start thinking about issues that perhaps they haven't had to have thought about or at least haven't had to have focused on so much in the past Hilary well in terms of perhaps how it affects their workers whether the the amount of hardship and and the emotions that it brings up leads one to becoming more anxious for example more depressed for example so if somebody really is not happy that they can't go to the office and socialize and schmooze and it triggers emotions such as sadness or even fear you know concern and worry and most of us I would say the majority people don't know how to really work with emotions which are physical experiences and they block them they won't know what to do with these feelings that leads to anxiety and depression so we're also seeing a major epidemic happening before this pandemic and anxiety and depression and now it's it's getting even worse it demands that people really have skills to work with their feelings and to solve problems based on not only what they're thinking but what they're feeling inside as well something our culture's are kind of phobic about going to but something I feel is the missing piece for mental health I'm interesting mark when we talk about you know the workplace of the future and continuing to work from home what sort of IT changes might be necessary if we're going to have well in some cases the bulk of workers continuing to work remotely is it just a matter of continuing what we're doing or do we need to make bigger changes to the infrastructure so what I would say from my own company's perspective which is a small enterprise is that we are now asking ourselves do we even really need an office anymore at all because the rent that we are currently paying is about 20% of our op ex and we've transitioned to web meetings pretty seamlessly and now we're even talking about virtual reality meetings and and collaboration and things like that so I think what about what Hillary was talking about there Mark about you know some people just need to be in the workplace they need to schmooze in the workplace they they need that kind of shall we call it security or confirmation of being in the workplace I think there certainly is you know a benefit to traditional human interaction but you know clearly bykova 19 there's also a danger I think that virtual reality and other technology solutions are increasingly very you know similar to reality and and I think this is the trend and I think this is the trend that we'll see going forward does that mean though if we're going to start incorporate it sounds like kovat 19 is going to accelerate the autumn ization of the workplace and the incorporation of AI and VR right mark that's what we're looking at absolutely I mean we're gonna be able to talk to customer service agents you know visit hotel chains look at look at a new house that I might buy all this is gonna happen in VR in a safer and actually more convenient way absolutely Ali that's gonna have big impacts on workplace behavior then right well absolutely you know just kind of building on upon what both Hillary and mark said on in terms of how this is going to affect behavior I think or you know originally organizations when they thought about coming up with working from home setups they looked at this from a very technical perspective right so how do we adapt the technical infrastructure of the organizer such as the IT support had to come up with policies to make sure that working from home works well but I think kind of building upon what Hillary said what a lot of people have forgotten or let's say a lot of managers have forgotten to do is to also think about how to build the psychological infrastructure and this what I mean with this is more the psychological it's say the social and social psychological environment in normally in the organization or in the workplace that actually affects people's behaviors their well-being and also their their their productivity so think of social cues emotional cues contextual cues nonverbal cues for example that help us to feel validated that helps us to feel acknowledged but also helps us to feel safe so this is you know I guess it's not just the technical aspects or the functional aspects of redesigning the organization but it's very much the psychological aspects that we're actually missing when we're working from home and and I think this is what needs to be further designed into working from home setups if we want this to make it more effective in the long term so what what is the psychological infrastructure that needs to be further developed in a nutshell then Ali well absolutely this this environment is for example let's say let's give some practical examples here so how should leadership manager even think about how to build psychological safety in working from home in an organization you can do that because you have a sense of belonging you see each other and you you can play upon these cues to help people feel productive and engaged but when you're working from home this becomes really difficult so how do you build this psychological safety in a work environment especially when a work environment is remote another thing that you can think of for example is policy design how can policy design make sure that employers or employees feel much more autonomous that they feel that they have the ability to make their own decisions for example when to do their work remember one thing when we're working from home we're also managing our life our family life and so we we need to be able to do that on our own accord without having managers for example being on top of us and acting or micromanaging let's say how we do things so I think this is the the elements of psychological design or psychological infrastructure that needs to be considered when working from home and there's different practices that we can do to facilitate this as well interesting Hilary it sounds always like companies are going to need to think of those companies at least that want the bulk of their workforce to continue to work remotely we're gonna have to think of perhaps even a new sort of orientation policy based on new HR and professional policies and procedures I think that would be wonderful and I think it's much needed in our world anyway because there is not enough of an emphasis on on connecting on on multiple levels not only intellectual levels but on very deeply authentic and emotional levels and that's part of the problem of why we have an epidemic of loneliness and not to mention anxiety and depression that we need to start to introduce education to people on emotions and connection because all humans are wired for connection we're deeply social beings and all all of us men women have the same core emotions that come up without conscious control people don't realize that you can't control emotions you can only control what happens once they come up and that they have to be shared so that people can talk about their fears they can talk about their anxieties their can they can talk about their sadness and the losses that kovat has cost so I'm interested Harry when you hear when you hear people talk about you know acceleration of artificial intelligence and virtual reality in the workplace does it make you cringe or fear I do feel fearful I guess I do I feel fearful for for people in in in so many ways not just AI but again the lack of community or the the losses of communities that people need so dearly and that we need tools to cope with the stress that comes that and the emotions that come up from that that drives so much of our behavior and anxiety I think that's a missing piece well let's ask mosket mark if he's got that missing piece can any of the the sort of software do be developed to make up for that lack of of physical connectivity I think that it absolutely can and I think that it's not really near where it needs to be but it's on its way so for example there are AI software programs out there now where you can Pro you can practice hiring or firing somebody in AI you can practice negotiating a business deal in AI so you can learn how to do that in a humane and empathetic way and that's what AI can do today so just imagine what this is gonna be like in five years so AI is gonna be a big part of this picture going forward I believe but Ally maybe we can hire and fire using AI what about all the sort of nonverbal communication nonverbal cues that you pick up in the workplace Dee as a behavioral specialist are you worried that the workplace of the future will be deprived of that kind of information and connectivity well I guess you know as technology advances one thing we're seeing now that for with the zoom and Skype and all the other let's say conferencing tools that we have to our disposal it's not really good to kind of taste the air as they say right you want to pick up this these cues that are very important for us to to further understand how to communicate with each other remember one thing ninety-three percent of our communication is nonverbal so we we we rely a lot heavily on social cues to to understand what's what's happening in an environment take for example countries like like Japan which is a high context environment and very socially driven they need a lot they have they communicate in a very high contextual way so they use very little words but of expressions but also they use the environment to help communicate the message this is going to be very important to further facilitate if we want to do this online but I have to also say that I don't think the virtual environment will replace all social contact at all think of high stake deals mergers and acquisitions for example where you actually want to see each other face to face because we build trust and seeing each other face to face and I don't think our technology facilitates it just yet to have that same kind of feeling that we would normally have in in virtual environment so I think yes social cues are so important for us to to help facilitate our engagements but I don't think the technology is just year just yet and maybe in the future maybe rule might see more oriented reality or virtual reality play a major role in that as it helps us to create more richness in the communication and will help to facilitate also picking up these nonverbal cues or maybe even emotional cues let's say that we're now lacking with the current technology Tokyo technology if we go back to mark for a second perhaps we should before we get too ahead of ourselves ask the question of whether I mean the IT infrastructure ultimately differs from country to country place the place company to company right and whether you know that is going to be a big determining factor of how far you can go in completely you know making your workforce connect remotely are we gonna have a riot be 2 or 3 or 4 tier system globally right so if if we all if all of us all the sudden all over the world start working at home immediately there is something that we call the digital divide in that you know the you know some of us have fiber optic access some of us in Japan and Korea and other places even have 5g now and many people don't and so this clearly becomes more important and I think that this will be more important for governments and and and so on to really under stand as is a part of national policy so I do believe that you are correct in that this could be a potential issue might the digital divide Hillary manifest itself in other ways not simply between countries in terms of that IT infrastructure but between different types of people in the workplace those who are let's say IT competent and not so IT proficient differences between people in terms of generational and and age demographics it seems to me that it would the capacity to be adept on the internet and technologically is an advantage for those people who have better access and more skills and again as an emotion educator I could see it creating shame and people that can't compete and that don't have the skills and anger that it's it's an injustice it's not fair and people have to be able to manage those emotions and constructive ways interesting what about Ally things like group dynamics how one reads the sentiment of the majority in the office is all that going to change if people increasingly work from from home well I think you know as I mentioned before we need to have we need to understand the social aspects of work and especially when we get together and team dynamics play a huge role on on let's say task performance and our job performance when we're now working from home we can still work in a collaborative manner thanks to the virtual environment that we're currently using now to facilitate let's say discussions brainstorming sessions innovation for example you know a lot of questions have been around can we still innovate because this is a group process when we do this online the good thing is we can and as we as we come much more equipped and we're able to master our digital tools much more effectively and there's more tools out there to help us do this we can still be more in of we can still work more collaboratively together and we can then kind of we'll have to replace let's say the physical dynamics that we have and start to build up some kind of virtual dynamics as it may so that we can still feel connected because you know being connected is so important for us as human beings but also it also helps us to you know feel motivated it gives us a sense of belonging in a sense of security but it's definitely something that I think we can still facilitate and as I mentioned before the as you know the technology start to further develop and advance we'll see that collaboration and and and the dynamics that we can get out of that online will help us to facilitate still kind of a virtual let's say dynamic environment Marc Alli earlier talked about the need of some people to be in the office to feel the hustle and bustle to be productive from your experience what does working remotely or the more that you allow people to work remotely and at a time of their choice what does that do to the productivity curve so we see nothing but massive increases in productivity I mean I I live in Tokyo where many people unfortunately travel 90 minutes to the office in 90 minutes back shoulder to shoulder to someone in a very very compact subway train this is all off the window now and I think the the industry is waking up and realizing that those three hours every day could be put to much much better use and so we're seeing massive interest in telecommuting solutions but also virtual reality solutions mixed reality solutions digital transformation virtual transformation I mean this is definitely the future what we thought would take two years has now taken two months amazing Hillary maybe we should also talk about the situations in which some offices some factories they'll need to bring people back to work physically from the workplace but it's still gonna be likely to be a disliked ly different workplace perhaps with more distance between employees maybe hot-desking is out maybe they'll even be alternating shift patterns alternating workdays there's going to be some psychological impact from that loss of proximity right I think so and and dovetailing on what's just been said even on whether you're having decreased proximity at work or using video technology what is going to be lost is the kind of casual conversation the personal stuff that happens at work how's the family how's your mother's illness these things that create safety and camaraderie and that make us feel better as human beings and then we are able to be more productive and and happier human beings and so I think you know even if we go into the lack of touch touch is such an important part of human interaction and soothing each other and connecting to each other that there's a great loss that's going to happen and again some people sorry go ahead I was just gonna say some people may experience a great relief you know those who the huggers of the world and the non huggers who can't even you know just like a lot of space so what I say for one person may be the opposite for another person and it's all okay it's all within normal limits anything this is this has been a really great discussion let's thank all of our guests for their insight that they've added to this show mark Hillary and Allie and thank you for watching you can see the show again any time by visiting our website for further discussion head over to our Facebook page that's facebook.com forward slash AJ Inside Story you can also join the conversation on twitter our handle there is at AJ inside story a man and the whole team here for now thanks for joining us. HOW TO CREATE A WEBSITE (ANOTHER FORM) how I create my mondo bytes website in literally one hour so this is something that you've been interested you've been wanting to build a website for your channel or maybe for your business I'm gonna show you how I did it in one hour now I do want to thank Wix.com for sponsoring this video and because of them they are able to help the channel like videos like this for people who are interested in building their website so if this is something that you're interested in watching then stick around I have a pretty great video for you guys to watch so let's go ahead and begin I'm gonna show you guys my current website the way it sits the way it looks right now as of today because I do plan a change and tweak it in the next couple of weeks so this is my mondo by its website you have my shop page which is stuff that I sell stuff that you know I no longer use or are interested this is my gear page stuff that and this is I need to update this actually stuff that I use to make these types of videos this is for brands brands that want to sponsor the channel so this is kind of a section for them and then a little bit about me so this is kind of a very simple website that I just want to have out there for people to just visit and learn more about me behind the scenes kind of front and center because I want to show people really behind the scenes and what happens here on the channel I have a blog and then social updates so this is kind of what's happening on my social media side so I'm gonna show you how I built this so very first thing that you want to do is get on over or head on over to Wix.com so this is free it's free to sign up and there's different types of tear programs that you can sign up for if you want to add a little bit more functionality and stuff which I'm not gonna talk about because I want to show you guys how I built my site so the very first thing I want to do is I have my current site which I can manage but that's not what I want to do I want to create a new site from scratch so the very first thing that I want to do is go here and then create a new site so when I first built my site I didn't know what I wanted I just kind of was looking to build a site but I didn't know the direction so it'll ask you like what kind of site do you want to create you want something for your business do you want something maybe you own a restaurant this would be a great start for you to just kind of click there and it'll kind of guide you and help you through so right now I know that I want more of a blog style web sites go ahead and click on blog and then from here it's gonna ask me basically two things how do I want to create my website do I want to use their like artificial design intelligence machine that basically just answer a couple of questions and then it creates this cool website based on your answers which is exactly what I did initially and I actually did a video on that and I'll leave those linked down below if you guys are interested in watching that or if you want to create something from scratch basically since I already know what I want to do I'm gonna create a website based on their just standard editor so I'm gonna go ahead and just click on choose template now they have a lot of great templates so for example if you're a photographer you can go ahead and just click on photography and then it'll give you a whole bunch of lists of templates that you can choose from which some of them are really cool like for example that this one here this is wedding photography one looks pretty nice if you do obviously weddings if you want to do something for example of your own videographer this might be something that you might be interested in a couple of again they have a bunch of templates that you can pick from obviously I already have my design that I have in mind because I already built it so we're gonna go based on that so what we're gonna do here is we're gonna choose a blank template basically a clean slate so that way we can build upon that and even if you do decide to go this route there's different types of templates for example they have like a classic layout they have a strip header layout a minimal layout again I already know the style so I'm gonna build it from scratch so I'm gonna go ahead and just click on edit but again they do have some base lines that you can just click and just build off of that so I'm gonna go ahead and click on edit and then we're gonna go ahead and begin from here so what you'll see here is just kind of like a word document per se everything is just clean slate there's really nothing here and then you can add elements for example we can add a background Adlam elements we can add different apps we can upload pictures we can do a lot of different things which I'm gonna show you guys so let's go ahead and begin and see what my current website looks like so for example right now we have this nice cool logo on top mondo bytes we have some social icons up here above and then we have a navigation menu so let me explain how a website so essentially most websites have a header which is the very top piece of that and that header part of it basically shows up on every page so anything that you add to the header is gonna be shown in every page if you want it to but ideally you do because you want your navigation to show up you want your social icons icons to show up and obviously you want your header or your excusing your logo to show up so that information stays the same underneath that is your page so for example all the information below that that's for the homepage and as you click through that information will change so anything in the page area is not going to change and then below that we have your footer and that's information that again it's not going to change that footer information will remain the same so you won't definitely want to put a vital information on your header and then on your footer in this case again my social icons my navigation menu and then my logo so let's go ahead and begin designing this so I'm gonna go ahead and just close this out because we don't need this anymore and I'm gonna go ahead and add an image because I want to add my logo so I'm gonna go here and then just click on add and then right here where it says image I'm gonna go ahead and click on my image uploads because I've already uploaded this beforehand so I don't need to do this again so I'm gonna go ahead and just find my logo which I think it's actually right here and I'm gonna go ahead and add it to page now because I already did this beforehand normally it would just search on your computer so we just you can choose a file and then just find it on the directory and then it would upload it to their server and then you can just select it but again since I've already uploaded this beforehand just kind of saving a little bit of time so then here everything is very easy to do you can just drag-and-drop move things around again it's very simple that's the whole idea about building a website it's you want to make it as simple you don't really want to get involved with code like that cuz I understand not everybody is a coder so again this is the header and you'll see that it's highlighted here this is the page and then below here is the footer so we want to do is we want to add this to the header so what I can do here is I can make my header a little bit bigger so I can stretch this out so that way my logo will fit and I can just drag this over here and then BAM and it'll tell you right here too that this information on the header will don't show this again because I already explained it to you guys so here there is my logo it looks really good and I can resize it I can just drag this over I think it's a little too big and I can just drag it over resize it a little bit and it'll automatically resize it both based on width and height to keep everything proportion so that's really cool so now from there we want to add our social icon so what we do is we're gonna add a new element so then what we have to do here is just click on add and then what we're gonna do is go here on social so find a little social button and then we can pick different types of social bars so there's a whole bunch of different you know variations that you can get obviously I remember it's this one right here so I'm just gonna drag this over to the top right and that's basically it now how do you add your social platforms on here because it doesn't know who you are so all you need to do is go on to where right here we're to set social links you go ahead and just click on that and then from here what you can do is just it'll give you the information based on the icon so for example this is Facebook and then if I want to add my own so I'll just go ahead and just change this to mando bytes so forward slash mando bites click on done so now it will redirect anybody who clicks on this link to mando bites okay and then what we want to do the same thing for Twitter so we'll just go ahead and change this to mando bytes so twitter.com forward slash mando bytes obviously whatever your URL or your handle now keep in mind I want to show you guys something it'll ask you what do you want this link to do so when they click on it do you want them to go to specific web address you can have them go to an email you can even have a phone number so if they click on it'll tell you that are using a mobile mobile phone it can dial that phone number so let's say you're a shop maybe you you know you cut hair or something that's very useful you can have different types of things that you can have it do and then you can also tell it if you want to open a new window or basically rewrite overwrite that current window I personally like having it open up a new window because I don't want to take them away from my website so let's say for example they go on my Twitter page people get distracted they start going into a whole different rabbit hole so what I like to do is just open up a new window so that way whenever they are done and they close out they'll say oh yeah that's right I was browsing mondo bytes let me go ahead and continue to do that so I recommend just open up a new window personally for me and of course you can add I'm not gonna go through every single one of them just add all of your social icons and let's say for example you don't use one like I don't use Pinterest I don't really care for it so I can just go here and there's a little trash kind trashcan icon and then remove that image and then go on and so forth now to me Instagram looks weird like this is a weird icon and I can replace this icon so I can go over here and click on replace and they have other icons that you can choose from so for example I have one that I uploaded earlier if I go to my images and it should be somewhere right here so I prefer this this is more of their current icon so I can just select that or you can upload from one from your computer and I'm just gonna choose this image and then it's gonna overwrite that one and then if I want to rearrange them in any particular way let's say for example I want YouTube to be on in front I can just drag and drop let's say from YouTube I want Twitter to be second I want that one but let's say for example like I'm very active on snapchat like how do I add snapchat and it's very easy all I have to do is just click on add icons and then there's a snapchat one or there's like LinkedIn or you know again you can upload your own if the platform doesn't exist and then I could just add this to the gallery and there it is and then again you could just edit your link or add your own link to your social platform so we'll move snapchat back here and that basically is it in terms of like social icon so let's go ahead and click on done and then see what that looks like okay so that looks really good and again you can reposition this however you want if you think it's a little bit too large in size all you need to do is just go to layouts and then you can adjust the pixel size of the icons so for example right now it's 39 pixels the width and then we can just go ahead and do that let's say the spacing is a little bit too wide I want to tighten it up a little bit more I can go ahead and just do maybe 10 pixels so it looks a little bit better I think I like that I'm a big fan of the way it looks I think it flows really well so now let's go ahead and add pages because right now we only have one page so we have our current home page and then we want to add a couple of different pages so the next page I think I had was I want to sell stuff online so I added a shopping cart page so if I go here and then I go to store I can add an e-commerce site and it allows you to you know add your own you know pictures your own pricing and it's very intuitive and I'll go briefly through that a little bit later so we added our store very simple and kind of gives you a little bit of examples of different products and stuff and you can obviously delete this it just gives you it gives you examples that way you can just follow through and kind of get an idea of what your store will look like so right now if I go to pages I have my shop or excuse me my home page but if I just click on it it'll take me to our home page if I click on shop it'll take me to my shopping cart and then if I want to add another page so for example about me I can go ahead and just click on page and then I'm just gonna put about and then right now I want to capitalize everything so I'm just gonna go ahead and change that to shop let's go ahead and see what other pages I have so I have shop my gear for brands and then about so I'm missing my gear and then for brands so I'm gonna go ahead and add a page and then for brands and then add another page for my gear stuff and then my gear okay so now I can rearrange this the way it shows up over here this is the little shopping cart icon so if something has somebody has something in their shopping cart you can it'll show how much or how many items are in there so I can go ahead and just move this up here just kind of above my social icons and then if you see like this is something that I'm kind of very picky about like this icon looks much larger than this so if I want to make everything match I can just go to set social excuse me not set layout and then increase the pixel size so that way everything matches and that seems to match a lot better so I'm just gonna go move go ahead and move this over here actually I want to do this instead I want to have my shopping cart over here on this side at the very far right and then have my social icons right about right here give it a little bit of space okay that looks pretty cool so now we have our different pages so I was showing you guys so I have home for brands my gear and I can rearrange this let's say for example when I bring my navigation bar which I'm going to show you how to do that I can have shop come up first so let's go ahead and bring up the navigation page let's go back to our home page and then I'm gonna go ahead and just close this out and then add the the menu system or the navigation so I'm gonna go ahead and add a minion you can pick different styles I like to keep everything clean so something like this one interests me a lot better so here's my little navigation again I can resize this however I want now notice as I resize because I have you know a couple of pages if I resize it to small it'll say more so that way if they click on it it'll bring up more I don't want it to look like that and I also don't want home to show up because to me you know I used to build websites before to me when you click on the logo that should take you to the home page at least that's the way I like it so if I go back to my page here I can hide the home page from this navigation now how do I do that all I have to do is click on this little three button menu and then I can just hide this page so now when I click on hide it's not going to show up in the menu anymore so now just gonna show shop for brands my gear and then about so I'll just kind of tighten this up as much as I can before it gets on to more right there and then just kind of bring this up a little bit more oh I think right there looks pretty cool or maybe right about right there I think that looks nice and then I'm gonna go ahead and make my header a little bit smaller I'm gonna tighten it up a little bit so that looks pretty cool now I can edit this menu system so for example I can change the layout I can change the way it looks I can make it for example you know align it from left to right I can also and I'll show you guys really quick here I can change the design element which is something you know for example if I want to make it bold if I want to change a different color if I want it so that when somebody hovers over the menu I want to have it let's say for example I don't really like the blue color on this particular scene so I'm gonna add a color I want something red almost like the YouTube red color which I don't have the hex code for it but that looks pretty close to it so I'm gonna go ahead and add that so now when somebody hovers over my menu it'll actually turn red and let's say when they click on it what color do you want it to be so I want it to be that same red so I think it was this one here and yeah so once they click on it let's say they are on my gear page I want it to remain red so that people know oh I'm on this page again I can change it to bold the text so right now I think it's a little skinny so I want to kind of make it bold there it goes now it kind of stands up more so let's go ahead and close this out now one thing about this is that it allows you to kind of preview it and look at what your websites going to look like so for example if I click on preview right now this is giving me a preview of my page so remember we change this to red see so as I cycle through so if I click on a shop it'll take me to the shopping cart page as you saw the shopping products or the products from the shopping page loaded up and then if I go to my gear but then I can't click on home how do I click on home that's the problem so let me go ahead and jump back to the editor and then show you how I'm gonna do that so I'm gonna go ahead and click on my logo and then from here what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna click on link so basically when they click on my logo where do I want them to go and it actually will show me right here I can take them to the home page I can take them to a different page I can take them to a different URL I can take them you know they can dial a phone number an email address it's tons of features so in this case I want them to go home so now let's go ahead and preview that so everything you do you can preview in real time so I'm gonna go back to shop this is my shopping cart my fake shopping cart and then I'm gonna go ahead and click on mondo bytes which will take me to my home page now notice how it doesn't matter where I go where I go if I go to my about my gear for brands all of my information above here the header will remain the same except for anything underneath this so in this case shop that's the page part of it but that's going to change from page to page so let's go back to the editor so now this is looking pretty good now we just got the top header done now let's go ahead and look back to our reference site which is my current site and see what else we need to do so there's a little there's a little green shape here that I see and then there's a school animation and then all this stuff so let's go ahead and start building this so let's go ahead and go back to the editor and then we're gonna add an element so we want to add that cool shape and then it's fine shape here and then let's find this here this is like a basic shape design now I want this to show up in every part of my page because right now if you go to mondo bites and let's say I go to my gear page this green thing remains the same same thing if I go to brands if I go to about this green shape does not go away so what do we have to do if you said add it to the header you are right so we're gonna go ahead and pop this up here anchor that to the header and then just drag this from edge to edge and then we can change for example the design if we want to make it a little bit you know bigger I think it's about five or six pixels I think it's about five pixels let's go ahead and change that so you can make it wider you can make it skinnier we can change the color so it's like a green color I think it's this color more or less we're just doing this for demo so then we have that oops I didn't anchor this to the header there we go okay so this is now on the header part so it's looking pretty good now let's go ahead and move this up now let's start adding that little cool animation so what we want to do now is excuse me we want to add a strip now this is a clap well I don't want to do a classic image I want to do a classic video because it has a little video image that plays now this is not the video that we have here if you notice let me go back to my home page it has this like cool diamonds and not really diamonds but like really cool weird shapes that kind of flow in and out so we just click on this and then what we want to do is we can change the strip background so this is a video and this is something that they have free from Wix that you can select and this is an abstract there's different types of if you want animals if you want food or drink so let's say this is a blog site or something that you you you know you put food you can select this one here this cocktails one or you can also upload your own images which is you know obviously the best if you want to customize it in this case I just wanted something cool abstract so I just kind of searched around and I think it's this one fragmented so I'm gonna change the background that's basically it let's go ahead and preview it and make sure that was the correct one so I'm gonna go ahead and preview that and I looks pretty good that's actually the exact same one so we're in good shape here so now we want to add the video stuff this is like behind the scenes this is my channel this is something that I want people to see when they come to my website so let's go ahead and add video so let's find video here and what we want to do is I want a classic layout something's gonna go ahead and drag and drop and you can resize this so this is not the current size so we can just move this up just kind of button this up move this wider stretch it out and that's basically it now obviously this is not my website this is not my youtube channel this is not my information so I'm gonna go into manage videos now I already did this beforehand because it knows who I am because I already logged in and stuff like that so it should automatically know exactly bring up my librarian channels and stuff so I added a playlist of behind the scenes so I'm just gonna select this and then just kind of close this out and they don't show you automatically but in your case you would just have to put your information in there very easy to do but I already did this beforehand to obviously save a little bit of time so I'm gonna go ahead and go into settings just to kind of tweak this a little bit so this doesn't look like my current one so if you go back to mine you'll notice I have four videos down below there's less information that's showing so I want to go ahead and kind of follow this this this layout here because I like it a lot better so I'm gonna go here where it says behind-the-scenes and let's go ahead and just go to the design or excuse me the settings show title show publisher so I think that's that right here oh no that was something else show title that should be right here I do want to show the title I don't want to show the channel title which should be behind the scenes share my channel I do want people to share my channel I don't want to show any channel info so that's this right here so I'm gonna go ahead and get rid of that and then down below there's a little search for video I don't want people to search for video because I want to show them what I want them to see on my website so I'm gonna go ahead and get rid of that already looking pretty good and then I want to go to the layout and I want to have four videos in a row so down below here that looks much better I'm gonna go ahead and close this out and I think we got it now there's one more thing I forgot to do this watch now if you notice if I go back to my current website it has rounded corners and it's that red color that I like so I'm gonna go back to my editor we're gonna go ahead and go into settings and we're going to change the design so the button here's the button we want to change that from square to round so now we have rounded corners and then the color so we want to continue to use that and that's the thing whenever you add a color it'll just kind of remember it so these are the colors I've been using it's like your color palette and then go ahead and just click on your latest color and then that's gonna match more to the current style that I have on my website so that's looking pretty good I like the overall design and luck let me just move my footer down a little bit more because we need to add a lot more information so let's go ahead and just kind of reference this to my current site and that looks pretty good and then one last thing let's go ahead and preview it to make sure everything flows so did you guys catch this did you guys see there's a small little change that I need to do so pay attention if you look at this site and you look at this can you tell the difference so the biggest difference is that the background this little animation doesn't go all the way down to here so we need to change that so let's go ahead and go back to editor let's go ahead and select our background strip and then what we want to do is we want to stretch this out to kind of match our video right about right here and these are all just design choices I just want everything to flow obviously there's really no right or wrong way it's just kind of how you want to do your website so that's the way it's gonna match much better so one more time let's go ahead and preview that now there's one more cool thing whenever you preview your website you can see how it's going to look on a mobile phone so right now if I click on mobile it's going to switch the preview from desktop to mobile so I'm gonna go ahead and just go to edit mobile view now this is gonna show me what it's gonna look like on my mobile phone and I can edit this the weight like for example right now I don't like this because I'm a mobile phone you can't really appreciate the background so I can actually delete this part only on the mobile side of stuff so if this is something that I don't like I can just go to the editor on the mobile side and completely remove it so that is something that I really like see welcome to the mobile editor so if I don't like this strip on the mobile editor I can go ahead and just delete it but it does not take it away from the desktop side so let's go ahead and just go back to the desktop editor and then you'll see that on the desktop it still remains so that's something that's really neat so you can edit your website different on the mobile side take elements out insert elements and it'll be completely different from your desktop just to make it a much better experience for mobile for mobile viewing so that's really cool so let's go back and look at our current site or my current site so we have on the left hand side latest news and then we have social updates so let's go ahead and add that so what I'm gonna do here is now we want to add a blog so the left-hand side is my blog site so let's go ahead and go to blog and then add this to the site so it's gonna create a new page for blog now the blog I really don't want to create a new page website where people can you know like click on and stuff so it's gonna just you're gonna see it here on the menu more we want to hide this or I want to hide it on my site so the blog I want to hide this same thing like members page I want to hide this because I don't currently have a members area which I do plan to but not right now so I don't want to show showing up on my navigation menu so I'm hiding it but I do want people to view my blog but I want I want them to see it from the home page so since I hid these pages people won't be able to see them or browse through them they can only see the blah information on the home page so let's go ahead and go back to home so let's go ahead and add the blog to the to the home page now so let's go ahead and go to add and then we're gonna go back to blog and then these are different types of elements or not elements but different types of looks that you can choose so I want a one column blog so I'm gonna go ahead and add it here now don't worry you're gonna see that it kind of overlapped a whole bunch of information and that's like the beauty of it you can just drag-and-drop move it around now obviously this is way too large I want to minimize this a little bit more so I can just scale this over and then just move it over to the left and that's basically I just kind of move this down and I like it I like the way this looks in fact I currently like this set up over the one I have which I'm gonna be switching so for the time being I'm gonna keep it this way because I like this much better because right now it shows like the admin who's writing the blog post so this is really good if you have multiple editors writing blog posts it'll show and give credit to that person so it'll say Armando let's say you know Carlos write something it'll say Carlos it'll show when it was posted for example a minute ago it'll show the title of the blog obviously these are just filler blogs is just to give you an idea these aren't real blog posts and then just the randoms snippet text and then people can just read more and then obviously how many views and people can write comment so I like to set up I'm gonna keep it because I like it but I do want people to know that this is like the latest news this is what's happening so I'm gonna go ahead and add text so we're gonna add a small heading and then we're just going to go ahead and drag this over and I'm gonna just drag this over here to this width and then over here this way and then what I'm gonna do is I'm going to Center this align it to Center now I have latest news I believe that's what it was latest news and if I'm not mistaken I had a different color too yeah the latest news and it's the red you can see a trend here the latest news let's go ahead and change the color so we go here to the little color and change it to red it's a line center I think I want to move this just a little bit up and then also with the blog just kind of move this up a little bit more so that looks pretty good if we compare it to the current one latest news obviously this template layout is a little bit different because this is where the title is what is mondo bytes whereas the title is down here but I like this a lot better I think this looks much cleaner and I'm gonna keep it this way so on the right side we have our social updates so this is like my you know facebook my Twitter my Instagram stuff that's going on so this kind of aggregates everything into one section on the home page on the right side so same thing I want to copy this so it's very easy you can just go ctrl C copy and then then ctrl V and then just move this over and then I'm gonna go ahead and just kind of align it now one thing I like about this editor is that it shows you where things are so that way you can align it center and then here I think I put social updates in the purple color so I'm just gonna go ahead and type social updates and then we're gonna go ahead and change the color to like I like this purple this looks nice and the very first thing is Facebook so we're gonna go ahead and add an element and then we just go here to where it's a social and then we find Facebook so this is the one I have drag this over and then boom right there and it'll show up now obviously this is not my Facebook.com page so how do we change it we go in settings and then what's your Facebook.com page ID so in my case mine's mondo bytes whatever yours is just type it in and hit and turn then automatically it's like that's simple and that's why I like this platform because it's really easy to use there's a couple things I want to change like for example I want to Center this and I want to Center it from over here so that looks much better now I noticed that on my right-hand side there's a lot more space so I can actually make my blog a little bit bigger so I'm gonna just stretch it out and then just kind of leave a little small little gap that looks great I think that looks awesome now I can just stretch this over so that way it's aligned Center to this that looks awesome the next thing I have below this is Instagram so I'm going to go ahead and just go to add same thing go to social and then what we want to do is go to Instagram so add my Instagram feed and then it'll just pop up and obviously this is not my Instagram page so I go into settings connect to Instagram now because I am connected to my computer it'll automatically just you know populate all the images for my current Instagram feed and then just close this out resize this so I'll just go ahead and resize this to the exact width of my Facebook and then I want to tweak this a little bit more so I don't want this show more so let's go into settings I'm gonna change it up a little bit so let's go into layouts looks fine and again how many images do you want per oh how many rows you know display show more button no so we get rid of that and you can just change the design change you know show likes and comments show location this is all stuff that you can tweak very self-explanatory so I don't think I need to dive really into this too much and then after that we're gonna add the final one which is Twitter.com now Twitter is a little bit tricky because I'll tell you what Twitter the way they work is for example they have different types of token login tokens so they don't necessarily have like a login or excuse me like an API that allows you to integrate it with Wix.com or really any social platform it's a little bit more complicated so the easiest way to do it is by going into Twitter and they have like their own code that you can embed to your website so now this is where it gets interesting because you have to add a little bit of code to your website nothing that's going to you know drive you nuts but I'll show you how to do it so for example you go to add and then say for example you want to add an HTML code you just go into more and then you'll see here it says HTML code so we just want to drag this over here and again just kind of make this a little bit wider and then I'll just make a little bit taller and then you're going to enter this so then what is this code that we have to enter so I already have it pre-loaded beforehand so I'm just gonna go ahead and hit paste this is the code and you can get this from your Twitter Twitter account so this is the code for example Twitter timeline it's going to be tweets by and you can if you know a little bit of code you can actually manipulate this a little bit and then this is the iframe and if you click on update you'll notice that it shows my Twitter feed and then I can just drag this and make it a little bit larger so let me just make this page slightly larger and then there it is right there great so now I have my Twitter feed so again this one requires a little bit of code and you can get that HTML code in your Twitter account it's very easy to do and you just paste it on onto here and that's basically it you don't have to do anything else so now our site you can see we are like 75% done just with the home page so now what we're gonna do is finish up whatever's left which I saw had some social icons down below so I can either copy this one or add a new one so for example I can add another type of social icons so for example we'll go here let me just scroll up if I want to change the design a little bit and just for the sake of this demo I'll use these instead so I can add this right here and you don't have to change your information like the information you've already entered from your social icons it remembers so I think this I like this way better currently the way I have it matches the header but I kind of like this just to kind of make it look a little bit different and again I keep this here because these are all my social updates and even though I'm not showing all my social updates from you know for example snapchat or anything like that I do want to show all of my social icons so we want to get rid of Pinterest.com so I'm going to go ahead and set social icons get rid of Pinterest and then done that looks much better anyway let me just go ahead and just Center this and then we're done with that so now the final thing that we need to do is add our footer so that should be fairly easy as you guys can guess we're gonna add some social icons again you know you got to get people go to your website you know or at least subscribed to all of your other social platforms so we're gonna use a different type of look so this looks different from this then looks different from the one above and we're gonna go ahead and get rid of Pinterest put YouTube over here Twitter Instagram and then Facebook Google+ yeah like that okay and then from here we're gonna change the layout I think it's a little too large the icons so we're gonna make him a little bit small I think 18 20 pixels is good yeah we're gonna Center this so this thing knows where the center is right there that Center has that little line across and then finally we just got to add our little copyright so text and we're just do a small little heading so I'll just drag that over here and then copyright 2018 2029 okay obviously this text is way too large so we're gonna bring this down I think 11 looks pretty good I always like the COG right to be just small it's like the small print you know and then just kind of move this Center it up I'm gonna Center it to my page so just drag that over double click here and then go to alignment and then Center so there it is copyright think that's all I have it over here yeah it's a little bit bigger and I gotta change mine on my current site because it's already 2018 about 2017 and I think the spacing is a little bit too tight here so I'm just gonna make that right about there I like that so let's go ahead and preview the page this is our current homepage website with which looks awesome that's great so now I'm gonna show you guys a little bit of the blog and a little bit on the shopping cart side so let's go ahead and go back to editor so I've kind of already gone through these before but I'm gonna quickly excuse me quickly kind of go over over them so if you want to edit or add a new blog post you go into your blog page or you can just click on here and go into manage post so here you'll see all of the different posts that are available so these are all just the ones that they've added so for example they just want to give you ideas like you can add you can add you know community and categories and stuff like that so in this case who is the author's name so for me it's Armando I'm the author and I can create you know a new post and stuff so let's kind of work in Reverse let's dissect a current blog post so if I were just to click on create post essentially it'll bring me to something like this where I have my title right here so for example if I'm gonna create a new blog post I can say like how to build a web site in one hour and then I can write my text here and then these are all images that I've added you know from my computer and stuff and you can lay this out move things around so everything is is very easy to do essentially I mean for the most part and that's basically it I mean the blog is very simple there's really nothing to it so I'll show you here just really quickly you know add a catchy title add you know so how to create a website in one hour you know and they're just add some text like hey guys just can't write right now anyways you get the idea you can't type right now ah I'm going to show you guys how to create a site in one anyway you get the idea you can add different categories so like you know if I want a new one I can create a new one I can you know put it on blogging tips I can add images I can add video I can add a bunch of different types of stuff and then I can publish the website it or I can save it as a draft so I'll save this as a draft so that way it isn't published in my current site so that's how you do a blog it's very easy now the shopping cart side of things let's go ahead and go to our page to our shopping page this is very easy so we want to manage products so with the shopping cart you can add coupons you can have stuff on sale you can have a lot of different types of things so again we're gonna work in. Reverse what we want to do is add a new product so for example right now if I'm gonna add a new product it's essentially gonna show me something like this so I'm going to edit this one so when you add a new product you add the product name so for example I'm just going to put shoes in this case I can add images so I can add images for my computer or my current images so I can upload my own images and that's just gonna search my own computer I can add videos and then right here it's gonna ask you for basic information so for example you know what's the name of this product so obviously we already call the choose if you're selling for example let me show you what I have on mine so if I go to my gear I'll show you what I'm currently selling excuse me my shopping cart page so like I have a surface tablet for 60 bucks you know and then if you click on it you'll see like surface tablet of 32 gigs 60 bucks and then I have a couple images that I've just kind of took Oryx really great and it just kind of information from the manufacturer and I just this is my information I put the classic surface RT runs great that's it you can add this to your cart you can pay through PayPal and I'll ship it to you very easy so essentially it's the same thing so here's shoes let's pretend surface and then what's the price you know let's just say it's 85 bucks or if you're if it's something that you always sell and you want to have it on sale you can go ahead and push or click on this and then what's the discount you can do a percentage discount you can do a price discount in this case I can say it's 50 bucks whoops 50 so now over $50 discount it's 35 now and then it'll show on the website that there is a discount and it's $35 now if you go here on ribbon you can put for example if it's like a new arrival or have a little ribbon that shows new arrival you can put something like last one it's just something that'll show up there kind of like a little you know promo type thing or more something to engage call it kind of a call to action if you want to call it that and then the information here I'm a product description it's a great place to add details so this is where you add details about your product in my case I mean it's I just put plastic surface RT runs great you can put whatever you want on your product and then here's where you track your inventory so if you click on track inventory let's say you have ten of these in stock you can put ten and that way as it sells out let's say the last person you won't be able to buy anymore it'll actually track that inventory in this case I only have one actually I should put track inventory on mine actually I do have track inventory mine I got a little confused cuz I thought this was my current website so mine does track inventory I only have one so as soon as that surface RT sells like it's gone you won't see it anymore in this case the these shoes let's pretend you have unlimited amount of stock so it's in stock or out of stock here's a SKU number how much does it weigh because it does calculate shipping whenever you set this up and then more product information refund policy shipping information this is all information that you can add additional to you put current information that you have and any custom text that you want to add which will add it like as a custom field so for example maybe it's like jewelry and then you can put like custom engraving you know for $35 or you know whatever it is that you want to do or maybe it's like you know make sure to you know install this first before you do this like just special instructions I would use it for that now there's different product options for example this shoe comes in black brown or for example it can also come in gray or you can add your own maybe it comes in red alright type in red enter oops red and they can't even pick a different color if that's not the right red you can actually kind of make it more or less or if you want to add another option like for example size like size maybe it's a t-shirt maybe you have large maybe you have you know different types of other variations and several options not variations customize settings per variations means for example black color might be a little bit more than red in fact I think red should be a little bit more just because it's more of maybe of an exclusive color so whenever they select red the price is going to be $45 instead of the standard $35 so that's something that you can change again it's very very flexible and then once you're done with that just go ahead and click on save and then the rest of the stuff is just you know connecting your your for example the way people are gonna pay whether it's by PayPal you can have different types of credit cards and stuff like that so I'm not gonna go through that but essentially that's just basically it so if we go here to shoes let's go ahead and preview it so you guys can see so it's on sale you guys see it's you know scratched off quick view now if we pick red it's gonna change the price to $45 so very cool right instead of 95 so the red is a little bit more because they're limited edition and then here's the product information so this shows up on the right hand side here's a return policy here's that shipping information and then if I want to go to the next product I can go just easily do that or if I want to just kind of mouse over and see the details of my product because it does support high res images obviously it down skills it so it can look really good here but then I can just kind of look around here and it looks good I like it I mean this looks really nice so if you go back to my page let's go ahead and just go back to shop and then out here I have for sale and then this is the stuff that I'm selling so I just got a couple of products I still need to add more I get people buying stuff all the time so this is actually a really great way to get people coming your website if you sell stuff really cheap like I've sold phones for like a hundred dollars like flagship phones you know so if you come to my website and if you're watching this article see this is the perks of watching these videos now you know giving you a heads up you should kind of check here on a frequent basis at least maybe every other week or so because I do post stuff for sale so a little FYI so anyway a site looks good we got the home page done so if we go back to our editor let's go back we're in preview mode so let's go to the home page it looks great this is exactly you know the way my current site looks we have the blog and we have the social icons we have our cool shopping cart page now we have four brands so if I go here for my brands I have different text production social branding and influence so this is what I do so I've worked with a lot of different brands not only on my youtube channel but outside my youtube channel too so this is very simple I'm gonna go through this very quickly here so if I go back to my editor all that is is just basic text so if I go to add text I can just go add for example a page title bring it up here and then I can just I can literally just copy and paste this now so copy and then paste close this out stretch this out a little bit more and then I'm going to Center this so this is should be something that you guys should already know how to do and then it's gonna drag this down here okay now over here now we have more text so this is just standard text same way now to add images I showed you guys earlier you just go to add images and then you have a selection of either free images clipart you can even get images from your Facebook page so that's something that's on your Instagram Facebook Flickr account you can do that so if you know there's a particular image that you like you can just get it directly from there which is actually really cool you don't have to go through all this crazy workaround so I'm gonna go to my social and then let's just go into those do Microsoft Zillow LGI just select all of these add to page and then there they are and I can just rearrange them make them small kind of to match and see this is really easy I mean this is kind of like working almost in Photoshop per se kind of move this around now if you look at my current site I made them really small so that we kind of shows the brands that I've worked with and then I added a little contact form below which is kind of what I want to talk about now so now that you guys know how to do this let's add that contact form so here there's a bunch of other stuff that we can add so we have you know menu list contact social music so this is what I want to do and there's different types of contact forms so for example here's one with which looks like it has a map so this is great if we have a brick-and-mortar store you want people to see where you're at if you just want a basic contact form kind of like the one I have you can select this one just drag it over and then resize it put it however you want that's basically it set your email so so when someone fills out the contact form what email address do you want them to use so basically in my case you could just type in you know whatever email address it is and then if you want to add a second email so maybe there's somebody working with you that you want to see see you can do that too now what are they required to field so for example name is it required or is it like is it mandatory or optional in this case you know well it's not a correct dress but anyway you get the idea if it's mandatory for example I need to know your name this is a mandatory field I need to know your email that's oh man I mean this is actually mandatory obviously it's a contact form maybe the phone number is not mandatory I can just leave it off the message obviously mandatory the subject line maybe it's not mandatory and then what does the send what does the button say sans submit I mean you can change this and then when people submit this message what do you wanted to say so like for example you can have it say like thank you you know someone will reach out to you in an hour or 24 hours or whatever message you want you can add there and then you know you can also validate the email like it's trying to validate mine right here and then just I'm just gonna close it out so this is very easy it's all just kind of basic information that you put in there and then for example mine that's how it is I have my name or it has a name email subject message so if a brand wants to reach out to me they want to work with me on my channel they can come here and then they can you know obviously put this information on my about page I have another contact form so this is I mean I sometimes I get you guys like fans and stuff reaching out to me asking questions and stuff so this is a great way to get a hold of me if you have a particular question obviously you know I get a ton of email so if I don't get back to you I'm sorry but basically this is it this is where you get to contact me you know email me ask me a question and a little bit more information about me so that's basically it in a nutshell this is literally my website in one hour so if this is something that you're interested in doing if you you know want a new website for your channel this is something they've been trying to do for your business this is a really great platform I have had no complaints I've been using their platform now for a whole year now in fact I did my first website a year ago I put out these videos a year ago in January so I'll link those down below those go a little bit more in-depth like for example on the shopping cart side of things if you want to learn more about that I did a video on that more exclusively if you want to learn more basic stuff so if this was a little bit more advanced which I think was not I mean I think anybody can pick this up go ahead and watch those videos so that was a part 1 and part 2 segment which I'll leave those link down below but yeah essentially we built my current web site obviously there's missing information for example that I didn't put but this is basically it this is all my information this here my gear and equipment the way it looks I'm just getting this it's remember how we did Twitter how we did a little HTML code the iframe this essentially is the same thing so right before I sign off I'll show you guys really quick quickly here so let me go back to my Wix I'll leave this let me go to my actual page so I can show you guys so I'm gonna manage my current site which is this one and then what I'm going to show you is that particular page which is an iframe it's just HTML code so if you have what's called I'm gonna go to my page here real quick if you have a kit I'm gonna go ahead and edit code this is my kit see it's an iframe and then this is embedding my kit code so you can get this from your you know if you go if you have a kid you can get this from their website and that's what I did I just added this HTML code and then whenever somebody goes to my website let me just preview this and I'll show you guys this is like my film gear which I have to update my vlogging here this is actually accurate so let's say for example somebody clicks on my a 6500 I can view this on kit or on Amazon and then obviously if somebody buys it I get a little commission kick back from them obviously doesn't cost them any money but then I can just you know get that by the way it's on sale check it out it's pretty good Wow not bad so anyway that's basically guys I hope you guys enjoyed this article and subscribe here Start the new google sites the new Google Sites so if you haven't been able to make a training here at the Academy and you just like to learn about Google Sites on your own then you're in the right place so join us today as we talk about Google Sites how to build one how to customize it and how to publish it to the web so that you can communicate with your students and parents before we get started today I wanted to show you where to go to get the resources you need in case you need a guide or directions for how to do the things that we're going to talk about so if you'll go to our Google Apps support site and if you don't know how to get there here's a shortcut if you'll go to goog L slash capital L capital C capital Z lowercase x-37 this will bring you to our Google Apps support site once you're at the site you'll want to go to learn about the apps and they can scroll down to Google Sites once you click on Google Sites the link with the directions is right here Google Sites basics this guide will walk you through how to create the Google site how to customize it and all the things that we're going to go over today however back on the site there are some sites tips from Google there's also information about how to add an email link to your website so that you comply with the HCBS policy and there's also directions on how to answer an email that comes from the web forum if you're still using the old Google Sites there's also the guide here there's also the video that we made on the old Google Sites available if you would like to continue to use the old Google Sites for now today's session however focuses on the new Google Sites so the first thing that you're going to want to do is you'll want to go to your Rubik's Cube and go to sites once you've gotten to the Google Sites page you'll notice on the left a link to the new Google Sites you'll want to click on this link to take you to the new Google Sites page you'll notice right away that it's very different and you'll see their tiles on this page that show the sites that you currently have well if this is the first time you've ever made a site with the new Google Sites your page will be blank it also may come up with a tutorial that you can skip if you'd like or you can go through that tutorial before you proceed you'll notice on the bottom left corner there's a link to go back to the classic sites so if you'd like to go back to the old Google sites where your other sites exist you can go there there's a plus sign on the right side at the bottom and this is where we'll go to make our new site however before we proceed I'd like to answer a question that you may be thinking about if you've spent some time building a site with the previous version of Google Sites or the classic version this site will not transfer to the new sites with a simple click you'll need to rebuild the site meaning you'll make the site and the new sites make your pages and then you can copy and paste the content over but it will have a new URL a new look and it will not be as simple as a transfer so let's proceed with making a new Google site okay so let's click on the plus sign and create a new site once the site page opens the very first thing that I would recommend doing is go up into the top left corner and let's title your site you're going to want to call this exactly what the purpose of the site is so if this is your teacher classroom site you may want to put your name in grade level or your name and your content area that way it's going to be very specific for the purpose so I'm going to call this one miss McMillan's science class this location is the title of your website in this area you'll notice that this is your page title notice that once I clicked in here it saved the website title to the top lift because that's going to appear on each of your pages so since this is my first page title I'm going to say welcome to MS McMillan's science class this is going to be the title of my page and notice at the top it's formatted in the title so it's a large title it's not a heading it's a title of my page but I can stretch it out to the side and you'll see their little guidelines to the left and the right when I'm dragging so this will make it a little less huge at the top of my page so before we proceed in adding some things let's just talk a little bit about the dashboard and what kind of tools are there so on the right side of the dashboard you'll see three tabs the insert tab which is where you go to insert any type of content into your page the page tab which will show the list of the pages on your website and the themes tab which will visit in just a moment at the top you'll see an undo and redo button these can be your friends if you make a mistake and you want to undo it quickly simply tap the undo button there's also another important button at the top and that's the preview button and I'm going to go ahead and click on that so that you can see exactly what the site is going to look like in the preview format you'll also notice that there are three views at the bottom the great thing about the new Google Sites is it's automatically friendly on mobile devices you can even see what your site is going to look like on a tablet and on a phone so that you can see your site in different sizes this last one is going to be a large screen or like if you're sitting at your desktop when you're ready to go back to editing you simply exit the preview and you'll come back to the editing version so that preview button is something you'll want to click each time you make a significant change to your page so you can see what it's going to look like to the right of that you'll have the ability to add editors and we'll look at that later as well as this is your publish button your publish button is going to be important when you're ready to publish your website to the web and give your link to your webmaster additionally you'll see this more options button or we like to call it the corn dog next to the corn dog you'll see the ability to send feedback to Google so this is still sort of in a new beta kind of version if you would like to send some feedback to Google of things that you would like to see or things that you see that aren't working the way that you'd like them to please send feedback Google is great about listening to your feedback there's also a help link that will take you to guides for how to use Google Sites and that tutorial that popped up in the beginning that you may have had to close you can always go back and take the tour again in case you need a refresher of how to use it so now that we've gotten our site titles at the very top we've given our page title a name the next thing I'd like to do is take you to the themes tab so if you'll click on the themes tab now previously there were only three themes available and they've already added some more so this is constantly changing and developing so what you'll want to do is click on the different types of themes and see which one speaks to you with each of the themes there's a little bit of a difference you'll notice there's some colors and styles that come with those so you can click through them and see which one speaks to you the most I'm going to choose vision because I like the way that's looking to me right now after you've chosen the theme you'll notice there's a color palette across the bottom these colors apply to menu bars they apply to headers headings so you'll want to pick one that complements the colors that you're planning to use in your site it's important to note that these colors will remain can across your website you can't choose a different theme on each page so you'll want to pick one that you really like that will go with the flow of your entire site after you've chosen the theme style and the color there's also a font style that you can choose from notice these are not names of fonts they simply are called bold modern and classic these fonts are already web friendly so you simply will choose the one that looks best with the style of your site when you've chosen your theme and you're happy with it then you can proceed to other things now you'll notice that my header which is the very top of this of every page is has a little picture here this one has a picture behind it and has my title on top when I hover over this I get the option to choose header type there are three types of headers there's one that has the large banner that's typically used on that the front page or the home page of your site then there's the banner page which is a little smaller that could also be on the title page or home page of your website and then there's one that just has the title for the simpler pages that maybe have a lot of content and you don't want to take up too much room with a banner this is totally preference whatever you like best I'm going to choose to use the large banner on this first page and then I'm going to click this back button I want to show you that you also have the ability to change the image on the top of the website when you click Change image it immediately comes up to a gallery google has already placed some images in their gallery that are very web friendly and header friendly so you'll notice these headers are more like textures or colors some are pictures but they're more artistic pictures not necessarily a picture of people because what you'll notice is since this is in sort of a panoramic style it's not very tall but it is very wide you'll want to choose ones that are more artistic I've had a couple people have tried to pick a picture of their class here and then what you end up having is a lot of torso those and no heads and no feet so this is probably better to stick with more of a texture and put pictures that you would like to see on your site perhaps down in the page area instead so again you can choose from some of these that are here or you could upload your own if you have the ability and the knowledge of how to make headers a lot of people sometimes put things in canva or some other tools to make large banners that are artistic and that may not be in this google gallery you can add them but I would do trial or error and also make sure when you choose one so I'm going to go ahead and choose this one here when you choose one make sure after you do that that you go into preview and you look to see what this looks like in different versions because you'll notice when I go on a tablet it's showing more of my picture and then when I go on the phone it's showing even more and it's actually just a corner of my picture so you'll want to look at all the views so that if you do choose your own image for that heading that you or the header that you make sure that it's going to look good in all views okay so now that we've gotten our header we've chosen our header type and we've chosen our theme now let's start putting some content on the page one of the things that's going to happen that I want to explain right away is this this large white area is going to become filled with boxes horizontal boxes that are going to house content I kind of like to think of these as sand boxes and in each of the sand boxes you can put different content and later on I'll show you how you can put different content into one box so what I want to do first is go to the insert tab and think about what I want to put on my page so if I wanted to add text I simply click on text box and you'll notice right away I get this little box and when I hover over you see how it kind of lifts off the page to show me that this is a box all its own and I can start typing here just whatever text I'd like to type so I'm going to say well come to my site this site is for students and parents and I may have some more other some other content so we'll just imagine that that's awesome content so here I have some content there are some tools at the top that I would like to talk to you about the first one that I would like to talk to you about is this a normal text drop down you will get normal text when you insert a text box but there may be times that you need to create headings to your pages so I'm going to choose heading here and you'll see what happens that makes it larger it brings some prominence to it but the main part of my text I'm going to always leave as normal text I would never put all my text in the page on title or all of it on heading or all of it on subheading just to make it larger the web version of this Google Sites kind of adjusts it how it needs to look on the different mobile devices so you'll want to keep the majority of your text normal but do separate those headings and subheadings using the heading and subheading format so maybe underneath this I want to do an area for parents and maybe under here I want to do an area for students and add some content for there so to show you how this works I used heading here I could come down here and use a subheading so it separates this area into two different areas you'll also notice some other tools that I have is I have the ability to do some alignment if I wanted to align it left center justified then I could also add a numbered list or a bulleted list so these options are always there I can also choose to select a word and make it bold or italics as well but do use these tools to make your text really clean you also have the ability to add a link so if I wanted to add a link for example learn about Google I could highlight a word choose my link and type in the link address now this is not one I would ever use I'm just using this as an example after you choose to make it a link you can either copy and paste this from the page that you're on or type it in and click apply now you have a link and you'll notice that when I hover over it it kind of shows that it's going to go somewhere that it's active if you ever wanted to edit it you would simply click on it click the pencil and change the web address if you needed to or you can delete that link as well or and remove it from the page the corndog menu also has the ability that if you needed to do strike through font or clear some formatting or if you know how to do coding for font formatting you can use that as well typically I find that everything I need to put in text is in this box and it works really well so I'm going to click outside of that and say that I finished this part but that I would really like to put an image on my site other than what's at the top of the page I would like to put an image in the middle so you can also go back over to the insert menu and choose images you can upload your image if you know the URL of the image you can come here and paste it you can also do some searching for images and I do want to point out that if you're inside Google Sites and you click on search when inserting an image that the results that are shown are labeled for commercial reuse with modification so this means that the pictures come up are supposed to be labeled to be reused on a website and you can use with modifications so these are usually safe to use also you can search in your albums if you have images that are already in your photo albums you can do those here and if you have an image just in your Google Drive in a folder you can find it there as well so if I wanted to go into a folder in my drive and insert a picture so I'm going to choose this picture actually I'm going to choose this one here select the picture then I've got my picture inside my page you'll notice that once I insert it it's going to have this little active box around it that has some corners so you do have the ability to drag your image and make it larger or smaller at the top you'll also get some menu items there is a cropping tool so if you wanted to crop out a certain section of the picture you could move your picture and crop it so if I only want these people that are in the cafeteria I can crop it then if I decide I don't like that I can always choose uncropped which will bring it right back to where it was I can also decide to make this picture a link maybe if you teach lower level students or students that have special needs where a picture would be much easier for them to find to click on a link and go somewhere then perhaps words you can choose to make this a link and it works just like the link above that we did with Google where I would just put in the link so let's say I want this one to go to the Henderson County made website and I click apply so now that means when this picture is clicked on it's going to take the visitor to this location and again you click on the pencil to edit click on the trashcan to remove there are some other options down in the corn dog that I would like to point out there is a replace image so if you've made a mistake and you don't really want to get delete your picture and start over you just want to replace it you can click replace and come up with the same areas that you had before to search for but this is the one that I really want to talk to you about adding alternative text the ad a Americas Americans with Disabilities Act talks about making sure websites are friendly for those people who have special needs or disabilities that are specific in the case to someone who has a vision disability adding alternative text is going to help when someone with lower vision or limited vision is on a website and as having the page read aloud to them they're not going to be able to really see that picture but if you add some alternative text that will describe the picture we do recommend that you do that for every picture that you put into your site so I'm going to click on add alternative text and all I have to do is type in a description doesn't have to be long but I'm going to say you know people in cafeteria this is going to be the description of my picture depending on the picture put in your description and simply click apply just make it a habit to do that with every picture that you put in so you'll be sure to comply with those recommendations of the a da so I've got my picture in I'm going to click in this bottom white area so I've got a box here that has text a box here that has a picture I want to go down to the next box and embed a URL and let's talk about what that means you can actually place a box on your website that shows a little preview of what might be on a website and gives a link so that you can go to an external site this is different from simply placing a link to another site on the page so I'm going to do the embed URL and I'm going to say that maybe we are going to the Biltmore house and I want to put a little box in here the kind of embeds that site in my page from the web now you'll notice that this pulled in the site there's a little picture there's the title and then there's the web address there so it's a little different than simply placing the link on the page so I'm going to click add so you see what this looks like now I have a little description and this is the description that comes from that site I will tell you that not all sites are able to do this as I'm going to go and try to embed another URL of site that I know does not work with this so you can see what happens so here is the Henderson County main site when you type it into the URL it's going to search and see if this is a site that that can be embedded and you'll notice that there's a note that says I'm only going to show you the link because we don't have the ability to embed this site so at this point if it were me I would cancel because I can just add a link myself in a text box without having to do this but to show you what this would look like if I went ahead and added it it's just going to be a box with the link in it so for me this is very unattractive so I probably would just close that add a text box and say visit the Henderson County Public Schools website highlight it and link it exactly like we did up here so this is really only helpful if you have sites that pull in that content so to show you something that we can customize about this is I'm going to click on it you'll notice I do get some ability to drag and make this larger and smaller but I also have a Settings icon and on the Settings icon I can actually because this is called a link card I can change the title so notice how this says Biltmore if I want this to say learn more about the Biltmore house I can do that and it will change momentarily I can also decide whether or not I want to show an image with this link card or whether or not I want to show the title or whether or not I want the description shown you'll just have to look at it and see what it looks like I'm going to go ahead and leave all of these and say done and you'll notice now I've been able to title this link card to delete it you would simply click on it and click the trash can again that's embedding a URL many people have asked us with this new website can I get HTML code and embed a widget that I've created at another website at this time that is not possible so if it's something that you are just you have to have and it's something that you really need on your website you may want to stick with the classic sites until that's possible from the new sites we're not 100% sure that's going to be available but if that's something you really need then this embed URL tool is not what you're going to use for that okay so I've got some text here I've placed an image and I've also used the embed URL there's also the option to simply upload something to your page so if you had something on your thumb drive an external hard drive or on the hard drive of your computer or your desktop you can select it and upload it to your page here so what I do want to focus some more time on is how Google works beautifully together and so if I have something in Google Drive Google Docs sheets slides forms any of those things I can easily put these into my website so I'm going to go through a few of those with you first of all if I have something in my drive that I want to place in this page I simply click from Drive and it will begin to search my drive so this was this was the direction page to how to make a Google site so I could click on that and choose insert you'll notice what happens is it puts an image a temporary image into this view so that I can see what it's going to look like on my page if I want to make it a little smaller I can and you'll notice here it looks just like just a small little window so I'm going to preview it because I really want to see what that's going to look like to my visitors so I'm going to scroll down and I see oh look they get a little scrollbar and they can actually read my page or they can click on this icon and it will open it up for them so I'm going to close this and talk to you a little bit about something I would do if you're embedding a Google Doc in your page or a Google sheet or form you may want to increase this and make it just a little bit larger so that when they are on the page they don't have to do so much scrolling this is a little bigger and it makes it a little easier for them to see a little more of the page but you can kind of just determine how you want that to be you can also see how that's going to look on a small window notice I'm just going to get a link to open it into a new page because on a phone you're not going to be able to really scroll through that document on the webpage so it just sort of puts a link to open it and into Google sheets on a mobile device it's going to look very similar so that you can scroll through it so if you're on an iPad or other tablet you'll be able to scroll through it that way and then back on the desktop view you'll have that window where again you can scroll so this makes your page really dynamic because they can scroll on the content of your page as well as scroll to anything that you've embedded from your Google Drive so that's embedding an item from your Drive and that could have been any type of item an image or any other thing that you have in your drive that you want to place in your page now let's talk about Drive folder if you have a folder that you've made in Google Drive and everything in that folder you want to share on your site you can actually choose to place an entire folder on your site so I could click here I can locate some folders that I want to place on my website and once you place a folder it's going to so if I click images here and insert this is going to place a link to my folder and you'll notice it shows every single image that's in that folder so once I view this on the web and scroll down to the folder contents you're going to see I've now got a window that I can scroll through and see those files so that would be super helpful if perhaps you've made a folder in your drive that has all these study guides for a particular unit or all the documents they're going to need for a certain thing this is a great place to put that keep in mind that the permissions on these items from your Google Drive have got to match the permissions of your site so if you're going to put the site on the web so that all your students and all your parents can access it you're going to need to make sure that the sharing settings on this document and the sharing settings on your folders are set so that anyone with the link can view or public to the web you'll just want to make sure that they match otherwise when they pull up this page they're not going to be able to see it so let's go ahead and place a YouTube video in our page so you click on the link from the insert menu for YouTube and you could search in the box to find your videos also if you've uploaded any videos to your YouTube channel you can simply find them here so if you're a YouTube channel user this is a great way to go ahead and put your YouTube channel videos on your page but in this case I'm going to search for mine now I happen to have opened the video that I want to use in another tab so I'm just going to copy the link for this video this is a kid president video and I'm going to go back in this box and paste that link then I'm going to click the search icon so it will start searching for that particular video once it finds the video you simply click on it once and if you weren't sure you could actually click here and open it and make sure but I always open it in a new tab make sure it's the right one and search for it this way so I can make sure that I'm putting the right one in my site and I'm going to click select the great thing about this is this just works it places the video on the page you don't have to get an embed code you don't have to know anything about coding you just find the video and insert it and there it is once you have it there you can choose to size it so if you want it to be smaller or larger you can just drag the corners and figure out how large you want it on the page there's also a Settings icon for the videos so you can choose whether to show the controls or high the controls if you want it to go out at the controls to slide away once the video starts or if you want to just have it fade or if you want the controls to be there all the time that's up to you you can also even control the color of the progress bar which is the one that shows how quickly the video is loading you can also change the title of the video here so if I wanted this to just be called 20 things we should say more often I could take off a little bit and kind of tweak this so that it's going to show the title that I want it to show and you can decide whether or not you want to show the fullscreen icon in the bottom corner I usually leave this on so that people who come to the site if they need it to be fullscreen I say go ahead and view it in full screen that's fine doesn't mean it's going to show full screen on your page immediately it just means they're going to get a little link to have the ability to watch it in full screen so then you can click done and your video is going to have the things on it that you wanted it to show so let's look at what this page looks like so I'm going to preview the video and come down there's my document I've got my box from with my folders and then I have my video and you'll notice immediately I could click it right now and play it so this is a really easy way to place YouTube videos so now let's move on to calendars oftentimes you have a calendar that you want to put on your website perhaps it's a classroom calendar I am going to point out to you that if you want to know how to make a new calendar just for your classroom or just for your website you can even call it website calendar there are directions on our Google Apps support site on how to create a new calendar so I'm not going to go through that right now but I will show you that if you want to embed a calendar you simply click on calendar and you choose from the calendars that you have access to and you'll see that this particular account has a lot of access to different calendars so if I have a calendar that I want to put on here so let's see if I've got my classroom calendar so let's just say my chemistry second period is my classroom calendar I want to place and I click insert it's going to actually show a little bit of a calendar now this is a test calendar so there aren't events on it but you can see how I can simply embed my calendar into my site now I'm going to go in the gear settings because there's some really cool things that this does that will be super helpful for you you'll notice when you first insert it that the default is to place it in agenda view I like to either use month view or week view on a site I'm a month view person so I can simply change it to month view and they'll still be able to click on and read more information you can decide whether you want to show the title or not or show the date I like that because I like to be able to see what month this calendar is showing up in also whether you want your navigation buttons to show I say leave them on there so they can easily browse through your site time zone is not that important but if you wanted to make sure it was showing you could and then do you want them to be able to view what's selected and I would say yes so let's go ahead and click done so now I have this calendar embedded on my site so if I go to preview to see what that looks like scroll down to the calendar it's embedding that calendar in my page so the great thing about this as opposed to putting a list of the things that are going to happen in my classroom and then having to remember go to sites update it I simply have to just go to the Google Calendar and update it and this is going to automatically place it on my site so if I went into Google calendars right now and I'll show you what I'm talking about if I go to Google calendars and let's say I'm going to put something on my calendar so I'm going to create something on my calendar and I'm going to put it on the chemistry second period and I'm going to go ahead and put it on today so you can see how this works I'm going to put test event you know but maybe this is field trip or permission slips do or whatever I can put that here and put some more information here and say where it's going to be and then I'm going to go ahead and hit save and then I'm going to go back to my site I'm actually going to refresh my site and I'm going to scroll down to the bottom of the page where our calendar is and what you're going to see is that event just shows up on the calendar I didn't have to come and change it in Google Sites I actually went to the calendar to change it so if you do place your calendar on your website you don't have to go back to your website to edit the calendar just go to Google calendars put your dates on and they'll automatically update so let's go back to editing you also can add a map this might be helpful if you're going on a field trip and you wanted to give parents the directions but you can embed a Google map I'm going to skip that one because that one's probably not going to be used a lot by our teachers because the maps to the school are already on the school websites underneath google embed section there's the google docs section so here you're able to embed a Google Doc slide sheets forms or charts and all this does is simply pulls up that specific app and only shows you those things so if I wanted to embed a slideshow onto my website it's going to give it a player bar so that it will go through and play this is actually a really good tool if you've made a presentation and it's got student information in it and you want it to be able to go on the website and be easily played or looked at by parents I'll show you what this looks like they're going to receive links so that they can click through the links or it will play on it zone they can also view it full scale so this is a great way to put in slideshows into your website Docs and sheets and forms those are the same they're just going to embed into your page so if you have a Google Form that you wanted to put into your page maybe you're collecting website information whatever it is that you're wanting to place you can choose your form insert it onto your page and you're going to get that menu to drag it smaller or make it larger you're also going to get information on removing it or opening it in a larger window I'm going to remove this one because that's not actually public form anyway so they couldn't have seen it so you can see that I've got lots of options for things to add to my pages so now that we've inserted them let's talk about how this looks for me this looks very boxy in that there's one item in each of these little boxes so first of all I want to point out that you can drag your boxes around so if for example I wanted to put this Google Sites document above the Biltmore House box I can click and hover where you get your crosshairs by those little dots and drag it to where I want it to be and drop it so you can move these blocks around the other thing that you can do and I want to show you this because I think this is super helpful is you can divide your page up into sections by using a text box and a little coloring so let's say I want this section to be pictures so I can make a text box and I'm going to say class pictures and I'm actually going to change that to a heading so that's a little larger and you'll notice when I hover over this I get a little pallet on the left-hand side so I can actually emphasize this line or this box in a particular way so I'm going to choose this dark one here I want to really emphasize this so I'm going to drag this and put it above class picture so that now it's starting to divide up my page and if I had more pictures and more boxes I could put them underneath it and maybe I want to do another text box and this is going to be called great websites I will make this match so I'm going to make this a heading and also place this in emphasis too so you can see hope I need to move my website under there so now I have pictures here websites so if I preview this it really does begin to divide up your page so that it has some division and is less one giant white line now the other thing that you can do is you can drag and drop the items that are in your boxes so in this great website section if I wanted this kid president video to be right next to the Biltmore house instead of dragging the box I'm going to actually drag this item and you'll see that I can actually drop it into a box so now I have two things in this box two very different items and if I even wanted to put a different item here I could fit all three of them so you can start to kind of build columns and again you're able to resize them and place them in areas if you wish now now this doesn't make sense to be class pictures but I wanted you to see that you can start building columns so this stops looking very boxy so if I wanted to change the size of these two items and put these side-by-side maybe this doesn't have to be as large because it's just a box with files in it then I can change the size of this you'll also notice that as I'm dragging things let's say I wanted this calendar to be in the center notice when I move this I get these lines that are helping me drag it and now I have to the blue lines on the side that are telling me I have equal distance on either side so if I drop this now I have this in the very center of the page so that makes it really nice if I want to be able to Center things on the page without having to make them giant just to get them in the middle so you can move these boxes around so that as you are now putting content into your page it starts being less of a giant white line so I'm going to actually show you that here maybe I don't want that text to take up the whole side so I can actually shorten this text box and maybe I want this picture to go up here next to welcome to my site because I want this to be something that they see when they come to my site so you can actually put things next to each other and use those sidebars to drag and drop so if I wanted to take this back and maybe make this half-and-half I can start making my page work for me so that maybe I'm dividing myself and making my things fit on my page a little better so you can move them side-by-side so remember you can move the blocks themselves and then you can move the individual items that you've inserted and drag those and drop those as well so let's talk about adding your email to your site we have lots of teachers who want to place their email address on their website so parents can email them and that's a perfectly reasonable thing to do however we do have a very specific way that you have to do it which is actually a board policy so if you want to know how to do this back on the document that I showed you at the very beginning that's linked from our Google Apps support page at the very end there's a link to directions if you want to put your email on the site follow these directions so if you'll click on those directions and I'm going to walk you through it very quickly what you're going to have to do is copy this URL that's at the bottom of this page notice I copy that then I'm going to go back to my science page and maybe I want to add some text at the very bottom of this page that says email me okay I'm going to make this a link by highlighting it and pressing the link button much like we did earlier when we were learning about text boxes and I'm going to paste in this link but before I click apply I'm going to backspace until right before that equals right after that equal sign and I'm going to put my Google username that is what comes before the at HTTP in co.org email address so if my email is aw Macmillan at HCPs and Sea Org then I need to put aw Macmillan for the most part for most of you this will be first initial middle initial last name but you know whatever comes before your at HSN Sea Org addresses what you put after the equal sign then you click apply now I want to show you what this does so that you'll understand it does keep your email private initially so what it's going to do is the parent would click here and then they're going to get a form that they fill out and click send and that will go to your gmail address do not go on to your page and type your email address on the page so don't go in here and put aw Macmillan at HP SNC org and save it that is breaking board policy and a lot of people just don't know that so we wanted to provide you with those directions in case you wanted to add your email to your site so we've only been working on this one page so maybe I need another page so I'm going to go to the page tab and we're going to look and see what's happening there and on this page tab you'll notice I have home that's what this page is the first page you create is always going to be your home page but you do have the ability to make other pages so let's say I need a homework eh so I'm going to click Add page and I'm going to name this homework because I'm going to make sure that I post my homework assignments on my website so my students and parents know what's going on so once I click done it starts building this page and over on the Left I see that I now have a homework page notice that it doesn't come up right away with that giant header that it had before you can change the header type by going back exactly where we did before and going into header and choosing the different items that you want but I'm just going to leave this one for me this simple short title because I want my home page to have that really big banner and be splashy and maybe I want this one to be more simple but you can do these any way you want and you'll notice that you can also if you choose to put in a banner you do get the ability to then change the image if you want so you do get the same options on the top of each page and I'm not going to go through this again with you but on this page now I will go to the insertion menu and I would insert whatever I wanted on that page so that now my homework page has information on it and as well as my home page to toggle back and forth between your pages that you want to work on you simply click on them from the page menu or you can even use the navigation menu that's starting to build for you and you can use that and it's always going to open up in that edit mode so I'm going to go ahead and make another page because I want to show you something else that is really helpful and let's say I want to make a page of information for students and so on this page you know I've provided a lot of information so maybe I'm going to you know type some text on here and I've got this information for students again not a good example just trying to show you some content so I have the information for students and then I have homework so let's say for my homework or for my students I'm going to have homework but I'm also going to have a link to some great websites that I want them to use and maybe in addition to the great websites page I'm also going to offer them some research resources notice I'm just making these pages I'm not putting any content in there right now I'm just actually just creating the pages and then maybe for my parents I'm going to have some information and I also want to make sure that I have a page that has my forms and policies on it notice I'm making a lot of different pages so as I'm building these pages it's kind of building a menu for me across the top so let's talk about menus for just a moment there are two options for navigating your site and after you start putting additional pages in there you'll notice if you go up to the top and kind of move your mouse you get a gear on the left hand side this gear controls whether you want your navigation to appear on the top or the side it's already on the top but if I wanted it on the side what happens is if I'm on a smaller screen I get what's called a hamburger icon which means if I click on that I see my list of pages on the side if I wanted it to be on the top I'm going to see it here across the top now you'll notice once you start getting a lot of pages when you use the top navigation it starts getting very cluttered and you're eventually you're going to get a link over here that just says more so if I make another page and I call this Internet safety maybe I want to give that information to my families now it doesn't fit anymore so now I just have this more there is a way that you can nest pages now that wasn't available a few weeks ago but we just noticed that it started working and we're super excited about it because we like the ability to nest pages and if you're not sure what that means let me show you so you see how I have a heading for students and I have a heading for parents one of the things that I can do is sort my pages into categories so that there's a parent page and a child's page not parents as in classroom parents but parent and child sort of like an outline format so I have a heading and subheading so to speak so let's say under for students these websites are for students so I'm going to drag and I'm going to drop this on top of students and notice how I get that blue line when I release it actually created sort of a folder and it put this great websites under that folder while these resources are also for students so I'm going to nest that there and this homework is for students as well so I can also bring that here and place that here so now I have this homework research resources and great websites all in this for students well forms and policies are really for parents so I can put that under that and maybe the internet safety information is also for parents so I want you to see what moving those did to my menu so now I have home for students and for parents just like over here I have home for students and for parents but now because I've placed those page inside those main categories and nested them underneath for students I now have a drop-down menu of homework resource resource research resources and great websites and under parents I have forms and policies and internet safety so you kind of see that if you start to build a lot of pages you may want to have some category pages that enable you to have a nesting so when your menus on the top is going to look like this now if you have page nest pages nested and you decide to use side navigation it's going to look a little different so let's see what it looks like now what you see is this little caret that you would open up to see all the pages so you really just have to decide what your parents are comfortable with and what you're comfortable with in order to determine if you want your pages to be nested or not I'm going to leave my nested and I'm actually going to choose to do my top top navigation since I've kind of shortened those menus but I do want you to show you I do want to show you what happens now that we preview this so I do have this menu across the top when I'm on the large screen view when I go to the mobile view in tablet form I also see that I have those dropdowns but when I am on a phone or small mobile device it will automatically switch to that hamburger menu that is so that on a phone you have the ability you have more screen real estate and I can see the entire title of the site and then I have my navigation that pops out only when I need it so just so you know even if you choose to have top navigation it's going to switch to the hamburger menu on phone view so that's making pages and building pages and you're going to edit those exactly the same way by either clicking on them from your menus at the top or clicking on the side and then adding your content to the page so now we're going to talk about what to do when you're ready when you have all this great content in there and you're ready to share this with parents and students there is a button at the top that you're going to want to make sure that you're familiar with and that's the publish button notice that does not say share that says publish so I'm going to click on that and talk to you about what that means you're only going to publish when you're ready to set your site free into the world it's ready it has the content you want on it and you want to be able to give that to your webmaster so that they can link that from your school page the first thing you're going to do after you click that publish button is you actually have to give your site a URL that's the location where your site will live your site cannot have the same URL as anyone else in Henderson County so you're going to want to type a name that makes sense and will be specific remember when we named our site and I said miss McMillan's science class well there may be another miss McMillan's class somewhere in Henderson County so by naming it Miss McMillan's class I run the risk of possibly someone else having that URL but the way to find out if someone already has that URL is to start typing what you want your URL to be so I'm going to say miss McMillan's class miss McMillan's class you'll notice you cannot use apostrophes or quotations there are certain characters you cannot put in a web address if you do choose to use a space you'll notice that it puts a dash so this says miss McMillan's class if you get a blue circle with the white check at the end that means that website is available if it's not available you're going to need to go back and change something about your URL so I'm going to just imagine that I've put miss Macmillan science class in here and then it's good to go so make sure you have the blue circle on the white check before you go down to the next step the next step is who can visit your site there may be a time that you want to create a website that only people at Henderson County with a Google account can ever see for the most part however you're going to want to say anyone on the web this anyone at HCPs & Sea Org would be a pro it if you were doing it's a website between people for a specific purpose a lot of times people will use websites just for projects or just for certain events that only apply to people in Henderson County I will tell you if you check anyone at HP SNC org only people who are logged into their HCBS NC or Google account will ever see it so that's a rarity so for the most part you're going to choose anyone on the web this last piece is totally up to you if you would like to include your site and search results on search engines you can place a check in here which means that if someone is using Google to look up your site that your site may populate in a search of someone searching for miss McMillan science class and they don't know the web address so you can decide whether or not you want to of that to appear in search I'm going to deselect that because this is not a real site so then after I do that I'm going to click publish now what I want you to notice is you get that publishing warning like your site is publishing you'll get this your site has been published successfully but notice that publish button looks different now there's a little drop-down next to it and I want to talk about what's in that drop-down if you ever need to go back and change your publish settings you can click on publish settings and it will take you right back to that box the other thing that's under there that I would use now is you have the ability to view your publish site and let me show you why that's important if I just go to publish settings and I look at my site location do you see how there's an ellipsis there I'm not even really seeing the entire website if you don't know what your website is going to be except for this last little part and you don't know the whole thing you're going to want to go up to publish and choose view published site so that you can get the entire URL address that is the address that you're going to copy and paste into an email and send to your webmaster at your school when you're ready for your site to be published they have to have the entire website address before they can link it to the site it also has to be published before you'll get that URL so that's a really important piece to make sure that you get so you can copy this and paste it into an email the last thing that's on that drop-down is unpublished if you ever want to unpublish your site and remove it from being available you can click unpublish here but you'll also want to make sure if you do that that you let your webmaster know to take that link off the school site so that parents or students aren't clicking they're expecting to get to your website and then get an error when they try to go there so those are the published settings now this is what I call a highlighter moment that you'll want to make sure that you're aware of you've noticed as I've been working Google is constantly saving what I'm doing everything I'm doing it's just saving and that's okay it is saving but I'm going to show you what will happen if you don't click publish again so I'm going to add some text on here and I'm going to say you know here's your homework for tonight and if I go off of that page to a different page but I come back to homework you'll notice it did save that text it's there it's saved but if I go and look at the live site the published site on the web and I go to the homework page it's blank we have had people contacting us in a panic I've got all this stuff on my web site and it's not showing up what you need to remember to do that is very different from other products as it is constantly saving but if you make changes you have to publish again once you click publish again your new changes will go up on your website so that when someone refreshes the page and sees it they'll see that content now I want to talk to you about why there's the good side and the bad side the bad side is we have people putting content and not republishing it and then no one's ever seen the content so the bad side is you got to remember to publish every time that you have a change that you want to publish here's the good side a lot of times I don't have a big chunk of time to sit down and work on a website so if I want to take my time on a certain page and add some content to it and I start it but I'm not finished and I don't want it to go live on the website yet that's good that I don't hit publish I'll just have to remember that once I come back and I do finish working on it and I am ready for it to show up that I've got to click publish so the good site is it does give you time to save your work in between publishers so that you can make sure that your you've got some enough time to finish something before you publish it but that is a highlighter moment publish when you're ready and publish every time you make a change that you want to put on the website okay even if you change one page hit publish it will republish all of them so I hope that kind of makes sense because that's super important publish publish publish now the last thing that I kind of want to talk to you about is adding people to help you edit your website at the top next to the publish button there is an add editor button that add editor button is only people that you want to help you edit your site this is not view only or comment only this is add editors now couple recommendations if you are someone who needs a lot of support from your webmaster because making websites is new to you and you're you know a little bit nervous about it and you want some help you may want to invite your webmaster to have edit rights to your site in the event you have something that you need them to help you with the other thing that you might want to consider is if you team teach or you have a grade-level site that you all want to do together you can invite people to edit and you can all edit the pages together and it works very much like Google Docs collaborative editing where everyone of you can be in a page and editing it at the same time only do this however with people you 100% trust that are going to be putting content on the web that that is good and correct and that you're not going to worry about something getting accidently deleted or added that you don't want added so make sure that you invite people that you trust and feel comfortable with those people will be able to add pages delete pages publish unpublish so that's the kind of rights you're giving to those people so just think about that if you're a grade level person or you want to do a team site of doing this collaboratively that way everyone is helping build something really awesome so again this is going to be where you add people who can edit now if you want to get back to your main Google site screen that shows all your sites on the top left-hand corner you'll see that Google Sites home icon and if you click on that icon once you've clicked that home button it gets you back to the screen so that you can see all the cards of your sites one of the things I want to point out is that if you go to the corndog menu that's right next to the site that you just created if you ever want to remove this site you can click remove and that will actually remove the site completely remember if you shared it with anyone that's going to remove it for them too so just use this sparingly but if you make a fake site and you want to get rid of it this is how you would do it so if you've been doing this along with me and made a fake site you might want to remove it at this point and now make one that you want to use for real thanks for listening to us today I hope you feel comfortable building a website put some content out there and sharing with your students and parents the great things that are going on in your classroom just a couple notes make sure if you're going to do a site that you commit yourself to it and you don't overload yourself if you start by saying I'm going to put homework up every day and you do it for a week and then you stop that's going to reflect poorly on your site and it's going to reflect poorly on you so make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew take a small piece feel comfortable with it get consistent with that before you add something else but have a great time with this if you ever have issues make sure you contact your webmaster for help .
