THE NHS WAITING LIST PROBLEM

 * In 2021, NHS England reported that over 5.12 million people were waiting for
   routine hospital treatment, the highest number on record. (Source: NHS

 * The average waiting time for treatment in England reached 10.6 weeks in April

 * According to a report by the King's Fund, the number of people waiting more
   than 52 weeks for hospital treatment in England rose from 1,613 in February

 * Patients with mental health conditions are also affected, with a significant
   increase in waiting times for psychological therapies. In 2020-2021, over

A record 7.47 million people are waiting to start routine hospital treatment,
NHS figures, external for the end of May show - up from 7.42 million the
previous month.




This is the highest number since records began for the NHS in England, in 2007.

THE IMPACT OF NHS WAITING TIMES ON PATIENT OUTCOMES HAS BEEN A SUBJECT OF
SIGNIFICANT CONCERN AND RESEARCH. VARIOUS STUDIES HAVE EXAMINED HOW DELAYS IN
RECEIVING TREATMENT CAN AFFECT PATIENT HEALTH, PARTICULARLY IN THE CONTEXT OF
ELECTIVE SURGERIES.

Negative Impact on Health Outcomes for Elective Surgeries:
Longer waiting times for hip and knee replacement surgeries result in a
statistically significant negative impact on health gains post-surgery. Each
additional week of waiting reduces the effectiveness of these treatments,
although the effect size is small at the individual level.




Harm to Patients Due to Prolonged Waiting Times:
Reports indicate that long waiting times for non-urgent treatments are causing
patient suffering. Less than half of NHS trusts meet the 18-week waiting time
standard for elective treatments.




Distortion of Clinical Priorities:
The introduction of maximum waiting time targets has led to a shift in
prioritization, benefiting patients with longer waits at the expense of those
who previously waited less. This change in prioritization can distort clinical
priorities and potentially harm patients who might have been treated sooner
under different circumstances.




Factors Contributing to Long Waits in Emergency Departments:

Long waits in emergency departments are influenced by several factors, including
the age of the patient population, the proportion of patients leaving without
treatment, higher death rates, and higher bed occupancy rates in hospitals.
