New figures from the Office for National Statistics show around 2.1 million people in private households in England had the virus in the week to March 5. And the estimated range of England's Covid reproduction "R" number is between 0.8 and 1.1, the UK Health Security Agency said on Friday. It also warned daily recorded cases could be "growing each day", a picture which is reflected across the UK. The estimated range of England's Covid reproduction "R" number is between 0.8 and 1.1 ( Image: PA) An R number between 0.8 and 1.1 means that for every 10 people infected, they will infect on average between 8 and 11 other people. The previous week's score was between 0.8 and 1.0. Experts say the growth rate of infections was -2% to +2%, compared to an estimated range of between -4% to -1% last week. One in 25 people were infected with Covid in England last week, according to the Office for National Statistics. PROMOTED STORIES But case numbers have risen from 1.9 million the previous week - or one in 30 people. Covid rates rose during the Omicron wave in December and January, with rates mainly staying around one in 20 people with the virus in England in recent weeks. But the Government pressed ahead with plans to scrap remaining Covid restrictions in England, meaning people with the virus are no longer legally required to self isolate. In Wales, the ONS estimate has risen from 94,200 people to 97,900, but the proportion is unchanged at one in 30. Northern Ireland saw an increase from 106,300 people, or one in 17, to 143,800 people, or one in 13. Infection levels have risen in Scotland for six weeks in a row and are now at their highest since estimates began in autumn 2020, with 299,900 people likely to have had Covid-19 last week, or one in 18. Government took 8 months to 'review' one text message linked to £160m Covid deal TUI ditches face mask rules for passengers on UK flights ahead of Easter holidays Sarah Crofts, head of analytical outputs for the Covid-19 infection survey told The Guardian: "Today’s data show an increase in Covid-19 infections across the whole of the UK, with a continued rise of BA.2 Omicron cases, “It is too early to say whether these increases have been driven by the easing of restrictions, recent school holidays or something else, but we will continue to carefully monitor the latest data.” Findings from the React-1 study, led by Imperial College London suggest a rise incases among older people. Scientists say it may linked to factors such as increased socialising, waning protection from booster jabs and a rise in the more transmissable BA.2 variant of Omicron. UKHSA boss Dr Jenny Harries has also warned that the pandemic is "not over" amid an uptick in cases among older people. While cases have fallen substantially since the peak of the Omicron wave in January, infections in England are rising among those aged 55 and older, a new study found. Researchers from the Imperial College London's React programme said the rise in cases could be down to more mixing since restrictions eased and the vaccine boosters wearing off. Dr Harries said: "These data confirm that cases have declined substantially following the peak of the Omicron wave. "However, the increasing presence of the BA.2 sub-lineage of Omicron and the recent slight increase in infections in those over 55 show that the pandemic is not over and that we can expect to see Covid circulating at high levels."
