SPOTLIGHT: MAY 9, 2024

EAPS researchers have found that heavy snowfall and rain likely contributed to a
swarm of earthquakes over the past several years in Japan’s Noto Peninsula. The
study is the first to show that climate conditions could initiate some
earthquakes.

CSAIL researchers have used machine learning to decode a phonetic “alphabet”
used by sperm whales. They found the structure of the whales’ click patterns
varies significantly depending on the conversational context, suggesting an
intricate communication system.

RESEARCH NEWS

A new sound-suppressing silk fabric could be used to create quiet spaces within
large areas. “While we can use fabric to create sound, there is already so much
noise in our world. We thought creating silence could be even more valuable,”
Grace Yang SM ’21, PhD ’24 says.

The Boston Globe spotlighted “Drawing After Modernism,” a new exhibit at the MIT
Museum featuring approximately 50 architectural sketches in various media by
“some very famous designers” from the late 1970s to late 1980s.

RESEARCH NEWS

Astronomers have observed starlight surrounding some of the universe’s earliest
quasars — blazing centers of active galaxies that host a supermassive black hole
at their core. The findings may help explain how these early black holes became
so massive so quickly.
