Click the Next Example button below to load next example. Click Previous button to load previous example. GOOD PHOTO. Face is straight. Enough space above head. No shadows or reflection. Face is clearly focused. Expression is neutral. Previous 1 of 18 Next Example BASICS OF PASSPORT PHOTOS It takes a bit of care while taking a perfect photo for your passport. To prepare your passport photos using this app, you can either select a photo from your gallery, or capture a new one using your smart phone camera. 1. TAKE A PHOTO Position Make sure you take a photo by placing the subject properly in the frame. Here are three simple tips to help you take a good photo. > For best results, ask someone else to take your photo. 1. Keep some space above the head. 2. Show both the shoulders and chest. 3. Do not stand too close to the wall. Light and Shadows To get the best results, you should take your photo outside. Natural light will illuminate all parts of your face equally. If you must take your photo indoors, stand straight to the source of light, so that both parts of the face is equally bright. > Both sides of your face should be equally bright. 1. Avoid shadows on one side of your face. 2. Avoid shadow on the wall behind you. Clothes and Background For a sharp-looking photo, wear a shirt of brighter color. If the color of the wall is similar to the color of your skin, hair or shirt, it would be hard to clean the background from your photo. > Wear a dark colored shirt. Stand in front of a light wall. 1. Stand in front of a plain wall, door or curtain. 2. Stand in front of a light colored wall. 3. Make sure the color of your shirt is not the same as the wall. View Examples 2. EDIT A PHOTO After you have opened a photo in the app, or captured a new photo, you can start editing it. Basically there are four steps to make a good passport photo. 1. MAKE THE PHOTO STRAIGHT For a good passport photo, your head should be straight. The app will try to automatically make your photo straight. You can drag the slider at the bottom of the screen to adjust how much the photo should be corrected. If the photo is rotated sideways, or mirrored because of the camera settings, you can correct it. After the photo looks straight, move on to the next step. 2. CROP YOUR PHOTO This is the most important step. In this step, you can select your country and size of the photo you are trying to make. If you don't see your country or size listed, you can manually add that size using the "Custom Size" button. When you have selected your photo size, you will see a sample photo for that size. To learn more about different sizes of photos, see our guide in Understanding Photo Sizes section. Adjust the Crop Frame The app will try to automatically adjust the cropping frame for you. If the frame is not properly aligned, you can adjust it yourself. Here are the two simple steps to adjust the frame. 1. Drag the edges of the frame with only one finger. 2. Drag inside the frame to move it around. 3. To zoom in/out, make the frame smaller/larger. After the frame perfectly fits the face in the photo, move on to the next step. 3. COLOR CORRECTION This step lets you correct the lighting and colors of your photo. If you need a black-and-white photo for some occasions, this is the step where you can do that. There are several settings like "Brightness", "Exposure" and "Saturation". You can change these properties to make sure your photo looks bright and colorful. When the photo looks good, move on to the next step to clean the background from your photo. 4. BACKGROUND REMOVAL Removing the background from the photo is a bit harder than other steps involved in making your passport photo. The tools available in this app is specially designed to remove background from passport photos. There are several tools that can be used according to the type of background you have. To use these tools, you need to upgrade to Premium Version of this app. Different photos need different tools and level of details to remove the background. See how to use those tools in the tutorial for our Removing Background section. 5. PREPARE FOR USE After editing your photo, and removing the background from it, the next step is to save it in appropriate format and size. See our guide on Passport Photo Requirements to understand how this app helps you prepare your photos for any purpose. REMOVING BACKGROUND Most passport photos need a plain background. Depending on the country, the color must be either white, grayish, cream, deep blue, etc. When you crop your photo, the app checks your photo to see if the background color matches the color required for that country. If not, you can remove the background from your photo and set it to required color. Unlike the tools in other Cut-Paste apps, the tools in this app are more precise and specially designed to remove background from a passport photo. BACKGROUND ERASER TOOLS There are several ways to remove a background from your photo. Depending on whether the background is a plain wall, or texture of curtain and trees, you should use different tools. The hair-line is different for different people, and the color of your shirt could match the color of the wall in the background. The available tools help you remove background from even the worst photos. It may take a few minutes, but you can do it! 1. MAGIC ERASER (FOR MOST PHOTOS) Magic eraser is the easiest tool to remove background from your photos. It can remove background from almost all photos if used properly. This eraser works by gradually erasing the areas right above the place you touch. To use the Magic eraser, follow these simple steps. 1. Select the Magic eraser. 2. Drag your finger around to move the eraser. 3. Drag the sliders to adjust the strength and offset. 2. AUTOMATIC ERASER (FOR PLAIN BACKGROUND) Automatic eraser works best on plain backgrounds. Touch anywhere in the background area to automatically remove the areas with similar color. 1. Touch anywhere in the background. 2. See how much area is removed. 3. Drag the slider to adjust the strength of the eraser. 4. Repeat for other parts in the background Restore If you accidentally erase a part from foreground, you can restore that area with this mode. Touch anywhere in the foreground area to automatically restore the areas with similar color. 1. Select the Restore button. 2. Touch the area that was accidentally erased. 3. Drag the slider to adjust the strength of the tool. 3. REFINE TOOL (FOR HAIRLINE) Refine tool is extremely useful to refine the hair area. The other tools cannot properly remove the background if you have a curly hair. This tool can erase the background from in between the hair strands. The tool works in two modes – Erase and Restore. Erase This mode is selected by default. Touch anywhere in the background area to automatically remove the areas with similar color. 1. Start by touching anywhere in the background. 2. Drag your finger towards the hairline and move it around to erase. 3. Drag the slider to adjust the strength of the eraser. 4. Repeat for other parts in the background. Restore If you accidentally erase a part from foreground, you can restore that area with this mode. Touch anywhere in the foreground area to automatically restore the areas with similar color. 1. Select the Restore button. 2. Touch the area that was accidentally erased. 3. Drag your finger towards the hairline and move it around to restore. 4. Drag the slider to adjust the strength of the tool. 3. MANUAL TOOL (FOR ROUGH BACKGROUNDS) This is the most simple tool that works like a paint brush and eraser. The tool works in two modes – Erase and Restore. Erase This mode is selected by default. Touch and drag anywhere in the background area to erase. Restore If you accidentally erase a part from foreground, you can restore that area with this mode. Touch and drag anywhere in the foreground area to automatically restore the areas with similar color. 3. EXTRACT TOOL (FOR EXPERTS) This is the most powerful tool to remove the background. With this tool, you can precisely remove background from any photo by making a selection. To make a selection, you need to draw a line by marking anchor points along the areas that separates foreground and background. You can customize how the selection line is drawn by toggling different switches like Magnet and Snap. Magnet This switch will guide your selection by automatically attaching the selection line to the nearby edge. Turn it off to draw the line segment without any intervention. Snap This switch will automatically add new anchor points without the need to lift your finger often. Turn it off to manually set an anchor point. Edit Mode You can drag the anchor points and add new anchor points to make changes to the selection line. 1. Mark a starting point on the left side of the photo. 2. Drag along to add an anchor point. 3. Extend the selection line up to the right side. 4. Edit the anchor points as required. 5. Either erase or restore the selected area. UNDERSTANDING PHOTO SIZES If you are making your passport photo for the first time, there might be several questions that you have about the photos. Passport photos have strict requirements, regarding pixel density, dimensions, file format, file size and photo printing. Compared to original photos, file size of passport photos are a lot smaller (less than 1 MB), because of their small dimensions. 1. UNDERSTANDING FILE SIZES Modern smart phones have bigger camera sensors that capture high quality photos. Size of the photo is defined by the dimensions of the photo in pixels, also known as mega pixels (MP). The higher the MP, the bigger the dimensions and file size of the photo. Original photos captured by modern cameras can be printed in extremely large sizes, like posters and bill boards. > Modern cameras produce photos with high number of pixels. Unlike posters and bill boards, passport photos are printed in small sizes. The most common sizes for printed passport photos are 2x2 inches and 35x45 mm. These are extremely tiny photos compared to the original photo captured by the camera. > Passport photos have much smaller dimensions and file size. Passport photos have a lot smaller file size and dimensions, so after cropping the original photo in correct width x height ratio, the app re-sizes your passport photo to a smaller size. It makes sure the cropped photo is of the size that you selected. 2. UNDERSTANDING DPI – DOTS PER INCH DPI, also known as PPI (Pixels Per Inch) is an important information that is saved witha a photo. DPI is not essential for digital photographs, but it plays a vital role while printing a photo. That's why this app saves all photos with appropriate DPI information. This information tells your printer how big the photos should be printed. > 300 DPI is the most common setting for printing a photo. Let's say, you selected the US Passport Size (2" x 2") photo. By default, the app will crop your photo, and re-sizes it to 600 x 600 pixels because one inch fits 300 pixels (or dots) while printing. The photo will contain extra information that tells the printer to print this photo in 300 DPI. By default, this app saves photo in 300 DPI for printing. You can change it to 600 DPI from app Settings. If you selected 600 DPI, the same photo (2" x 2") will be cropped and re-sized to 1200 x 1200 pixels. The app will save an extra information with the photo, that tells the printer to print that photo in 600 DPI. So, the printer will print 600 dots (pixels) per inch. That means, even if the pixel dimensions are doubled, the physical size remains the same. > More pixels don't mean larger prints. Print size depends on DPI. PASSPORT PHOTO REQUIREMENTS Governments around the world have strict guidelines about passport photos. The photos must meet these quality guidelines to be accepted. In most of the cases, there are different requirements for digital photos and printed photos. 1. DIGITAL PHOTOS FOR ONLINE FORMS Sometimes you need a digital passport photo to upload to online forms. Here are the common requirements for a online passport form. 1. Uploaded file should be either in JPEG or PNG format. 2. Size of the uploaded file should be within certain Kilobytes (KB). 3. The photo should have specific size in pixels. Eg. photo for US passport must be 600 x 600 pixels. > Save photo in any file type or size. Where applicable, the app lists two different sizes for the same country. Select the correct size, and crop your photo. While saving the photo, you can change the size of the output photo by changing its compression and quality settings. 2. PRINTED PHOTOS Printed photos are measured in physical units like inches or millimeters. Common examples of printed photos are 2" x 2" (2 inches wide, 2 inches long) and 35 mm x 45 mm (3.5 cm wide, 4.5 cm long). In most of the cases you arrange several copies of a photo in a single sheet for printing. Before printing the photo, it is essential to know about different paper sizes and how to arrange your photos. The app lets you select from a list of standard paper sizes like A4, 5x7 and 4x6. After selecting an appropriate size, you can easily arrange several copies of your photo for printing on a paper of that size. 2. PRINTING YOUR PHOTOS This app has an option to combine several photos into a single sheet of paper. You can print those photos from any color printer. 2.1 PRINT MULTIPLE COPIES Photo booths, pharmacies and photo studios charge you a lot of money for passport photos. Whereas, the same photo studios print a 4" x 6" (10 cm x 15cm) photo for a lot less money. This app lets you take a photo with your phone, and arrange several copies of your photo on a 4"x6" (10x15 cm) paper. Save Money Instead of one copy of passport photo, send the 4"x6" (10x15cm) photo for printing. When you receive the photo, you can cut it into pieces with a paper cutter or scissors. Using the Premium Features of this app you can combine photos of different people, or photos of different sizes on a single paper, and save even more money. > Print photos of several people at once to save money. Order Prints You can easily order printed copies of your photo from any local shop or an online service. We recommend you search online for print service providers in your area, and check their prices before arranging multiple copies of your photos. In most of the cases you will get the cheapest rate for 4" x 6" (10 cm x 15cm) paper size. The prices may differ, based on where you live, so arrange your photos on an appropriate paper sizes. Once you have your photo ready for printing, you can send your photo to the print service provider, and get it printed. 2.4. PRINT AT HOME Find your Photos This app saves all your photos inside the "DCIM" folder of your phone storage or SD card. You can find your photos inside "ID-Photos" or "ID-Photo-Prints" albums in your Gallery. Select a Correct Paper Size If you have a printer at home, you can print your photos with it. To print at home, you should know the size of the paper on your printer's paper tray. On the "Print Multiple Copies" menu, select the paper size that you have on your printer. If you don't see the exact size on the list, you can set the paper size manually by selecting the plus (+) icon. Select an appropriate unit of measurement, and set the paper size. For example, if your printer needs a 4" x 6" (10 cm x 15cm) photo paper, you should arrange your photos on a 4" x 6" (10 cm x 15cm) paper size. If your paper tray has A4 Size paper, you must arrange your photos on a A4 Size paper. Larger / Smaller Prints If you arranged your photo on a paper size other than what your printer has, your prints might come out in incorrect size. > Arranged on a 4"x6" paper. Printed on A4 size. If you arranged 6 copies of your photos on a 4" x 6" paper, and printed on a A4 size paper, your printer might enlarge the photos to fill the paper. Similarly, if you arranged 8 copies your photos on a 5" x 7" size paper, but your printer has 4" x 6" paper in it, the printer will shrink your photo to fit on that paper, making the photo smaller. If you arranged your photos in a correct size of paper, but still the prints come out larger or smaller, there might be a mismatch between the DPI (dots per inch) settings of the printer, and the app. By default, the app saves all your photos in 300 DPI, unless you have changed it to 600 from the settings inside the app. Please check your printer settings, and set it to print in 300 DPI or 600 DPI, whichever is selected in the app. For more details about DPI, please refer to the Understanding DPI guide. Printing your Photos If you have a wireless printer at home, your phone or tablet might be already connected to your printer. If not, download the appropriate app for your printer and set it up. Then you can print your photos and documents directly from your phone. If you know how to print documents from your phone or tablet, follow the same steps. To print your photo using your PC, you should first copy your photos to your PC. You can either email the photo to yourself and download it from the PC, or transfer it using a USB cable or Bluetooth. Open the photo on your PC and select "Print" option from the menu options. For best results, please set these options in your Printer Settings: * Quality : Photo / Best / High Quality * Paper : Photo Paper * Scale : 100% / Actual Size Do NOT select the Fit to Paper option. Un-select the option if it is already selected. PHOTO COMBINER TOOL This tool helps you arrange several copies of your passport photo into a single paper for printing. To arrange a photo open it and select the "Print Multiple Copies" option. After selecting a paper size, your photo is automatically arranged in the paper size you selected. This tool has some basic options like arranging orientation and spacing. You can change the gap between photos, and whether to print on landscape or portrait mode. Depending on the options you select, maximum number of copies of that photo will be arranged automatically. For example, if you need to print a 2"x2" photo but you have an A4 sized photo paper, as many as 20 copies of your photo will be arranged for you. Whereas, if you want to print on a 4"x6" paper, maximum of 6 copies will fit. > Premium version helps you save even more money.
