WOMEN-TO-WOMEN DIGITAL LEARNING ESSENTIAL FOR SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY

Yokohama, Japan, 8 March 2023: Celebrating International Women’s Day, ITTO
Executive Director Sheam Satkuru and ITTO Fellowship awardee and journalist
Talía Lostaunau called for stronger commitments to include women in digital and
technological advances, hence enabling creative solutions for an equitable
future in facing environmental challenges, including by facilitating
women-to-women learning.

ITTO REITERATES SUPPORT FOR CITES ON WORLD WILDLIFE DAY

Yokohama, Japan, 3 March 2023: In remarks for World Wildlife Day, ITTO Executive
Director Sheam Satkuru highlighted ITTO’s significant efforts to sustain
tropical forest wildlife and stressed the value of collaboration between ITTO
and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna
and Flora (CITES) for the conservation of threatened tropical tree species.

SOKA GAKKAI MAKES VIDEO ON ITTO INITIATIVE TO RESTORE LANDSCAPES IN TOGO BY
EMPOWERING WOMEN

Yokohama, Japan, 27 February 2023: Soka Gakkai, a community-driven global
Buddhist organization, has released a video of a field visit to an ITTO
initiative in Togo’s Blitta and Lacs prefectures that has increased the
financial independence of local women and enabled them to restore degraded
landscapes, adopt agroforestry practices and increase food security for their
families.

VALE HIRAS SIDABUTAR

Yokohama, Japan, 22 February 2023: ITTO deeply mourns former staff member Hiras
Sidabutar, who died in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday 21 February 2023, aged 77.
Dr Sidabutar was a valued member of the ITTO Secretariat from 2003 to 2007, and
he also performed many other roles for the Organization and more generally in
the service of sustainable forestry.

SUPPORT COMMUNITY ENTERPRISES TO INCREASE LEGAL TIMBER SUPPLY, SAYS ITTO

20 February 2023: Increased backing for community forest enterprises (CFEs),
especially in the tropics, would enhance the production, trade and distribution
of legally harvested timber and timber products in the domestic markets of
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies, stated ITTO projects manager
Tetra Yanuariadi.

declined in January in Brazil, the Congo, Indonesia, Gabon, Malaysia and Mexico,
and timber manufacturing dropped in China, according to the latest report of the
Global Timber Index (GTI), released today.

Call for abstracts for session on teak at XXVI IUFRO World Congress

The deadline for the submission of abstracts for the session, “Strengthening
Teak Forest Management for Sustainable Teakwood Supply Chains and Trade”, which
will be held as part of the XXVI IUFRO World Congress, is 2 June 2023. The
session is being co-organized by TEAKNET, the IUFRO Teakwood Working Party and
ITTO. Abstracts for the session should be submitted via the Congress website
at https://iufro2024.com/call-for-congress-abstracts

The XXVI IUFRO World Congress will take place on 23–29 June 2024 in Stockholm,
Sweden.
