LOGLINE:

After her sister’s murder by an abusive boyfriend, Kelly delves into her
family’s painful history and seeks compassion for her estranged, closeted father
hospitalized with COVID-19.


SYNOPSIS:

“My Father the Queen” delves into the complex relationship between Kelly and her
closeted gay father, Walter. Their bond frays after Walter’s secret is revealed
by his wife, Carolyn, leaving Kelly desperate for her father’s validation and
approval, often at the expense of her own well-being. The pandemic brings them
back together when Walter contracts COVID-19 and names Kelly as his next of kin.
Spanning the 70s, 80s, 90s, and the present day, the film unravels their
family’s painful history and the enduring quest for acceptance and
understanding.

 







MY FATHER THE QUEEN

Written by Lisa N. Alexander

Lisa, the film’s creator, and writer is an award-winning filmmaker and
storyteller.

The film is very loosely based on the filmmaker’s own experience. But once Lisa
started writing, the characters took on a life of their own and had their own
story to tell.

The film addresses mental health in the Black community, closeted gay life, how
“daddy issues” manifest, and finally what healing can look like.

The film has already won Best LGBT Screenplay from the Best Script Awards
London, Best Script from Cannes International Shorts, and was a semi-finalist in
the Paris Women Festival.

My Father The Queen is currently raising funds and anticipates beginning
production in the summer of 2023 with a release in 2024.
