38 years ago today, Oct. 12, 1986, U.S. President Ronald Reagan and USSR leader
Mikhail Gorbachev met in Reykjavik for their 2nd summit. Although it ended with
no deal and some hard feelings, it also lead to a breakthrough that eventually
facilitated the INF Treaty, the first agreement requiring the US and the USSR to
reduce, rather than merely limit, their arsenals of nuclear weapons. It also
produced one of my best
@time cover photographs. Back then we couldn’t upload photos from a computer,
(we didn’t have the technology to do that), but thanks to the foresight of Dirck
Halstead and Arnold Drapkin they tied up a lab to process the color film and the
only scanner in Iceland capable of converting transparencies into photos that
could be transmitted. I took the story-telling picture on that Sunday night, and
it was beamed to New York.
That photo appeared on the cover of Time the next day and was a journalistic
coup in the magazine world. All it took was couple of old wire guys to get the
picture out to the world! @cntrforcreativephoto @improvambassador @nickkennerly

My dear friend Beth Rickman left us 10 years ago today. She was 64, a
Renaissance woman, and a loving person to all who ever met her. Beth’s mission
in life was to help others, and the world is filled with those that she did. She
and her husband Tom Rickman are greatly missed. Love on this day of remembrance

A new exhibition “Entertainment Nation” opened today at the @smithsonian
@amhistorymuseum Two of the featured Items are the iconic eyeglasses and
typewriter used by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Neil Simon. My photo of him
that I took for a @time cover in 1986 is in the display. Simon used this
typewriter to compose more than 30 of his famous plays including his first
production, “Come Blow Your Horn” (1961) and the Tony award winning show, “The
Odd Couple ‘’ (1965). He drew on his own experiences, family dynamics and
adversities to create a new style of comedy that endures today. Simon won three
Tony Awards and a Golden Globe. He died in 2018 at 91. @pulitzerprizes

Nabbed in China. 52 years ago this week I was in the People‘s Republic of China
on assignment for UPI. I was intercepted by Chinese security as I photographed
Japanese PM Tanaka leaving the Ming Tombs during his historic 1972 trip. I
displayed my typical wtf attitude, but all ended well. Going to China at that
time was an adventure and a career highlight. The Nixon trip had been a few
months earlier, but at this moment I was one of a handful of Americans in the
country. (Photos by Yuichi “Jackson” Ishizaki of @apnews) @improvambassador

The @nytimes ran this story from their archives about the 2nd assassination
attempt against President Ford 49 years ago today. The story demonstrated that
1) President Ford was calm in the face of danger and, 2) His White House
photographer (me) displayed a dark sense of humor that unfortunately still
persists! A side note, the bullet she fired went between me and Secret Service
agent Lee Parker. I found this out later when the @secretservice showed me a
diagram of the incident and the path of the bullet. I told President Ford, “I
avoided getting shot in Vietnam, but hanging out with you is more dangerous!” To
his credit he thought that was funny. @sfbpanda @cntrforcreativephoto

My visa from the first trip I made to the People’s Republic of China 52 years
ago today. It remains one of the most excellent adventures from a career that is
still unfolding. Crossing the border from the New Territories of Hong Kong into
Mainland China was stepping back into the forties. I was lucky to have a look at
“Old China” before it became the vibrant and modern place it is today. I was one
of a handful of Americans there at the time. @nickkennerly @j_kennerly
