Founded by Fr. Robert A. Sirico in 2021, the Institute seeks to help educational institutions innovatively develop a culture that integrates an authentic and rich classical education and reverent liturgy. We aim to help communities build an entire culture that impacts the students, family, faculty, parish and the broader community by stimulating a deep desire to know and experience God through reason and faith. ABOUT THE INSTITUTE THE SYNTHESIS OF REVERENT LITURGY & CLASSICAL EDUCATION: FAITH AND REASON The St. John Henry Newman Institute seeks to enrich classical education by forming the hearts and minds of students in the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty through helping communities integrate a reverent liturgical life within the classical curricular and pedagogical educational experience. Taking an innovative yet traditional approach, that is, speaking ancient truths in a language people today can understand, we work with select schools and educational leaders to combine classical educational principles, reverent liturgy, and effective management practices to integrate a rich, sustainable and authentically Catholic spiritual life into a school’s culture. Our goal is to extend this renewal to an entire parish and beyond by retrieving a rich classical Catholic culture, identity and heritage. Our Programs Get Involved CASE STUDY: SACRED HEART ACADEMY IN GRAND RAPIDS, MI The St. John Henry Newman Institute emerges from the decade-long experience of renewal at Sacred Heart Academy in Grand Rapids, Michigan. With over a century-long history of serving the West Side of Grand Rapids, the school underwent a serious decline between 1970-2012, very similar to what many other Catholic schools experienced in the same period. Then something happened… Read Case Study ABOUT THE INSTITUTE ABOUT ST. JOHN HENRY NEWMAN St. John Henry Newman was canonized a Catholic saint in 2019. In the course of his long life (1801- 1890), Newman went from an Anglican clergyman, theologian, and academic to becoming a Catholic convert who was eventually named a Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1879. His conversion gave him a special appreciation for liturgical tradition. A traveler and poet, Newman’s writings became highly influential for both their doctrinal depth, elegant prose as well as in their comprehension of beauty. Widely recognized as one of the most formidable minds of the 19th Century, Newman’s classic work on education, The Idea of a University, provides the St. John Henry Newman Institute inspiration for its own work with its emphasis on the unitive nature of truth to revel in the beauty of mystery, while embracing clear doctrinal and educational models.
