ELECT UNITED TOGETHER AT THE 2021 OFL CONVENTION * Home * Priorities * About * * Back * Patty Coates * Ahmad Gaied * Janice Folk-Dawson * Endorsements * * Back * United Together * Patty Coates * Ahmad Gaied * Janice Folk-Dawson * Accomplishments * * Back * Patty Coates * Ahmad Gaied * Janice Folk-Dawson * Join the Team As we begin to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, United Together is committed to building worker power to achieve a just recovery for Ontario. As union activists, we can drive a recovery that reshapes our province and puts workers and communities first. United Together will support affiliates to build a better Ontario with good jobs, paid sick leave, and an end to precarious work. An Ontario where workers’ voices fill the legislature. An Ontario that takes the lead in addressing the climate crisis and is committed to reconciliation and justice for Indigenous peoples. An Ontario where the wealthy start to pay their fair share, and where we are not only engaged in the fight against systemic racism, but are also raising up black, Indigenous, and racialized voices across our movement and our province. Working people are the best hope for reshaping Ontario, and United Together, we can secure a fair recovery that supports ALL workers. Patty Coates OFL President Ahmad Gaied OFL Secretary-Treasurer Janice Folk-Dawson OFL Executive Vice-President ENDORSEMENTS * Throughout the last two years, the United Together team has provided a steady hand for Ontario’s labour movement during a time of chaos and confusion. As we begin to emerge on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are faced with one of the most important fights our movement has ever faced. For workers to be a central part of our recovery, we need to ensure that this next election sees workers’ voices fill the legislature – and that we elect a government that values public services, paid sick leave, and an end to precarious work. That is why we are proud to support the United Together team for the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) Executive. Patty Coates as President, Ahmad Gaied as Secretary-Treasurer, and Janice Folk-Dawson as Executive Vice President are the leaders that we need to bring affiliates and labour councils together, support campaigns, and work with community partners to shape a better Ontario. FRED HAHN President, CUPE Ontario CANDACE RENNICK Secretary-Treasurer, CUPE Ontario * Workers need strong leadership and commitment as we head towards a provincial election in 2022. Now is not the time to change our direction, but to continue to drive an agenda where workers are prioritized in this province. We must fight for a fair recovery from COVID-19, one that includes good paying jobs and protection for all workers. We need to fight to eliminate all forms of racism and discrimination and centre the voices of sovereignty-seeking, Black, and racialized workers. That is why the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) is endorsing the #UnitedTogether team of Patty Coates, Ahmad Gaied, and Janice Folk-Dawson. OSSTF believes that this team will help build a strong, secure, and worker-centred house of labour. THE ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ FEDERATION (OSSTF) * Team United Together has used their decades of combined experience to provide a steady guiding hand at the Ontario Federation of Labour. Patty, Ahmad, and Janice have also done an excellent job of advocating for working people in this province, pushing to ensure that the needs of workers and their families are prioritized as Ontario recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. SHAWN HAGGERTY President, UFCW Canada Local 175 President, UFCW Ontario Provincial Council * With Doug Ford’s Conservatives abandoning Ontario workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, Team United Together has stepped up and fought back for working families by inspiring union members to engage in political activism. Patty, Ahmad, and Janice have done an outstanding job of holding the Ford government to account and making sure that workers’ voices are heard loud and clear in the halls of power. MARTY WARREN Director, District 6 – Ontario and Atlantic Canada United Steelworkers (USW) * Team United Together has helped unite Ontario’s labour movement in advocating for decent work and strong public services, while fighting back against Doug Ford’s anti-worker agenda and reckless inaction on COVID-19. Patty, Ahmad, and Janice have also succeeded in restoring financial stability at the OFL and ensuring that the federation listens to and acts on affiliates’ concerns. I strongly endorse the United Together team for re-election to the OFL executive, and I believe their leadership will be vital in pushing for a just and fair recovery that benefits all workers. GLACIER EFFS-SAMUEL Recorder, UFCW Canada Local 1006A * The United Together team has shown time and again that they are not afraid to get out on the streets and fight for human rights and dignity for all. Over the last two years, I have marched with Patty, Ahmad, and Janice to protest racism and police brutality and to support Black Lives Matter, and I can tell that Team United Together not only believes in representing unionized workers, but also members of the community who have been marginalized in various ways. The United Together team stands up for ALL working people, and I am proud to endorse them for re-election to the OFL executive. MARK BROWN Secretary Treasurer of CUPW, Toronto Local Executive Board Member of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) * We as workers are facing new and extraordinary dangers in Ontario. We need solid leadership capable of leading us through these changing times. I, along with our Executive Board, am proud to endorse Team United Together to lead the Ontario Federation of Labour. Only if we unite and work together can we overcome the challenges we all face. JOHN NOCK President, UFCW Canada Local 12R24 * The Guelph and District Labour Council is proud to endorse the United Together team to lead the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL). Working closely with Patty Coates and Ahmad Gaied over the last two years, Janice Folk-Dawson and the team have brought intense passion to ensuring that workers’ voices are front and centre during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I know that United Together will fight hard to make sure that workers’ interests are at the core of a just recovery. JENNIFER HESCH President, Guelph and District Labour Council * Patty, Ahmad, and Janice are an incredible team of union activists who have helped to strengthen the OFL over the last two years. As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, I know we can count on Team United Together to push for a just recovery that puts workers and communities first – with good jobs, paid sick leave, and an end to precarious work. UFCW Canada is therefore encouraging all delegates to the upcoming OFL Convention, November 2-4, to help Build Worker Power by electing United Together to lead the Ontario Federation of Labour. PAUL MEINEMA National President, United Food and Commercial Workers’ Union (UFCW Canada) * The Ontario Federation of Labour needs Team United Together’s experience and determination as our movement looks to defeat Doug Ford and build back better for workers across the province. Patty, Ahmad, and Janice have always had the Society’s back, and we know that smaller affiliates like us can continue to count on their steadfast solidarity going forward. MICHELLE JOHNSTON The Society of United Professionals * The Niagara Regional Labour Council is proud to announce our endorsement of the United Together team for re-election to the OFL Executive. With this team leading the Ontario Federation of Labour, I know we will be able to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. Patty Coates, Ahmad Gaied, and Janice Folk-Dawson have always stood up for working people, and we need their leadership to help secure a just recovery from COVID-19. LOU ANN BINNING President, Niagara Regional Labour Council * Team United Together has consistently demonstrated that they are strong advocates for workers in this province. Patty, Ahmad, and Janice have demanded that the government be held accountable for its reckless decisions during the COVID-19 pandemic. And now the United Together team is pushing the government and employers for a just recovery that provides better jobs, fair wages, and paid sick leave. That is why the Barrie and District Labour Council endorses the nominations of Patty Coates, Ahmad Gaied, and Janice Folk-Dawson for re-election to the OFL Executive. MICHELE MACDONALD President, Barrie and District Labour Council * The Grey Bruce Labour Council endorses the candidacy of Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) President Patty Coates, along with the entire Team United Together, for re-election to the OFL Executive. A heartfelt desire to act in the interests of working people, and a firm understanding of labour and the needs of workers are two attributes that help Patty excel as a leader. And each day, hundreds of thousands of working Ontarians benefit from the actions, support, and guidance provided by the OFL. Together with Sister Coates, Ahmad Gaied and Janice Folk-Dawson have been exemplary in their roles and have advocated tirelessly for workers across Ontario, and that is why it gives me great pleasure to endorse Team United Together. KEVIN SMITH President, Grey Bruce Labour Council * As we emerge from the horrors of this pandemic, we find ourselves at a pivotal point both as a movement and as a province. We have faced countless challenges in these last two years – but in every challenge lies an opportunity. United as workers, we have an opportunity to re-shape Ontario into a more just and equal society – to ensure that all workers’ voices are central to any recovery. Our movement needs leadership that will seize the opportunities that lie ahead of us. Leadership that will bring together affiliates and community allies. Leadership that will lift up the voices of all workers. That is why I am proud to endorse the United Together team for re-election at the OFL. Patty Coates, Ahmed Gaied, and Janice Folk-Dawson are the leaders we need to help us all shape a better Ontario.
