Chosen 101 Best Writing Websites by Writer’s Digest for the last 23 years in a row. THOUGHT OF THE WEEK We've all heard the horror stories of a teacher who bashed a paper only for the student to quit writing or postpone doing so for years. The sad thing is that the student is only being taught to write for that teacher. The writing is usually more academic in nature. There's a big lesson missing. On the other hand, if classroom writers are taught to write for the class, or for a subjective online audience that may quit reading after the first paragraph if not entertaining enough, the gymnastics shift. The mindset of the writer changes. More minds will be exposed to the writing. A wider net needs to be cast to entertain, educate, or attract the reader. LATEST POSTS HOW I TRADITIONALLY PUBLISHED NINE NOVELS WITHOUT AN AGENT Douglas Weissman / 2024-11-18 Fact: I am a novelist and travel writer. Fact: I have published nine novels. Fact: I don’t have an agent. Fiction: The path to publication is straightforward. Imagine a labyrinth. Erase the walls. That's publishing. After my MFA program I stepped into the maze-less puzzle—lost. I queried the novel I had... Read More WHO YOU WRITE FOR C. Hope Clark / 2024-11-18 Just last night, I was assisting a grandson on how to write his paper for class. It was a paper in which he was to do research, actually do an experiment, and come to a conclusion. He wrote it per guidelines. He clearly wrote it for a teacher. That opened... Read More LOVE THE PATH YOU’RE ON C. Hope Clark / 2024-11-18 I spoke at the Marlboro County Library in Bennettsville, SC this week. It was a two-hour drive, but hubby and I needed to get out, and I simply adore a good book club visit. I have been to a lot of book clubs. Each has its own temperament. This time,... Read More A SMART WRITER’S SMARTPHONE Alex J. Coyne / 2024-11-04 I was asked to review a short story collection called NSFW by David Scott Hay, and in the process learned that, surprisingly, the manuscript was entirely written and edited on a smartphone. Smartphones are capable of writing and editing stories. While they’re distinctly different from computers or desktops, phones are... Read More TITLES AND HEADLINES C. Hope Clark / 2024-11-04 I like to scan emails on my phone, sorting and culling what I have to take action on. Then I go back to my desktop where my massive screen and lots of space makes my writing life easier to handle. What I wind up doing is deleting a lot of... Read More TRYING TO KEEP UP C. Hope Clark / 2024-11-01 The great thing about the Internet is the wealth of information that teaches us about writing and publishing. That's also the worst thing about the Internet, because you become inundated with the latest and greatest advice. About the time you feel you have grasp how to accomplish or succeed in... Read More WHEN SNAFUS HAPPEN C. Hope Clark / 2024-11-01 While at my annual Edisto Beach retreat recently, partially to work and partially to get away, I picked up the local newspaper. It's published monthly and is sort of informative, sort of gossipy, and partially public service announcements. It provides me a flavor of the beach and its people, though,... I’ve worked for legal agencies and registered court reporters -- and with training, so could you. Legal transcription is technical and detailed, however, also lucrative as a part-time income or career. What a scopist does Scopists work with court... Read More WRITING HISTORICAL NONFICTION FOR PROFIT Bobbie Smith Bryant / 2024-10-15 Since the popularity of DNA testing, millions of people have sought information about their ancestors. However, not everyone wants to do the research or write about their family history once uncovered. This opens a huge market for those who enjoy looking for dead people and an opportunity to turn a... Read More (WRITING) TRUE CRIME PAYS Alex J. Coyne / 2024-10-15 True crime is an interesting topic, and the niche is more multifaceted than a diamond. Authors with a knack for research and interviewing could make this genre their best friend. This wealth of wonderful material yielded quality vignettes that made the best local actors and stage directors (including a popular local radio personality) eager to donate their time and talent. Their presence, in turn, sold tickets. We played to packed houses and everyone had a great time. The bottom line is, without you, we would have had something rinky dink -- with you we had something substantial. The publicity you provided on the front end made all the difference in the world! * -LAURA KEPNER, SAFETY HARBOR WRITERS AND POETS Hope gave the keynote workshop at the Safety Harbor Writers Conference: Solving the Mystery of Writing, in Clearwater, Florida. Hope could have left after her keynote address, but instead, she stayed throughout the day and made a point to talk to individual writers one-on-one. At the end of the day, Hope participated in a panel and stayed for a Q&A. She left such a good impression on so many that I believe my conference would have been a success had she been my only presenter. * – WITH DEEP APPRECIATION, LAURA LEE PERKINS I am sitting in a ferry terminal, waiting for the next boat to take me to the Turkeyland Cove Foundation Writer’s Retreat on Martha’s Vineyard Island. Am I excited? You bet I am! Why? Because this is the first time in my life that I have been offered the gift of time and space for an entire two weeks to focus on what I love to do most: WRITE! I was accepted months ago and “anticipation†has been my middle name. The timeliness of this couldn’t be more perfect. Maine Authors Publishing just released my collection of twenty-two inspirational essays a few days ago! “Lighting Your Spiritual Passion†One of those essays was chosen for 3rd place in the Writers’ Digest Contest Inspirational category a couple of years ago, spurring me on to publish a collection of essays. When I opened the AMAZON page for my newest book, I cried with relief and joy. The common thread here is you, Hope Clark, and your FundsforWriters. You inspire me to have more courage, to reach higher, and you offer me threads of hope that I, too, can continue to grow and contribute something of worth to the world. Do you have ANY idea how much you mean to all of us who sit at our computers on Friday afternoon, waiting for your email to come in? I cut and paste every opportunity into a computer document that remains “open†on my desktop so that I can refer back to it any time I feel discouraged. Thank you for your dedication to sharing the roller-coaster ride of writing. You are a gifted teacher and mentor. * – MELANIE STEELE Advertising with FundsforWriters has brought amazing people to my writing retreats. My ads generated a strong, immediate response from Hope’s active, engaged fans. Hope is a pleasure to work with, and I highly recommend FundsforWriters as smart, effective use of marketing resources. www.forthewriterssoul.com/retreat * – REECE W. MANLEY Total Funds for Writers pays for itself almost immediately. Hope and her research skills are phenomenal. Thanks to TFFW I have sold four articles, all with clients who did this amazing thing called paying me. It’s quite delightful – money is querky but boy its fun stuff to have!
