Choquequirao: the ruins, the trail and the logistics

Choquequirao in the mist

Ezeur

The most important things to know about Choquequirao are that it is much bigger
than Machu Picchu and that the trail to get there is very steep and has
significant elevation change. (This blog and many more photos are on my website
https://heatherjasper.com ). The Choquequirao ruins are all of the things you
want in an archeological site: beautiful, mysterious, extensive, unique,
fascinating, etc. They have been classified successively as a fortress, a
ceremonial center, a city and the last residence of the Inca. In my opinion, the
most important aspect is that they were never discovered by the Spanish during
the decades of conquest. I was very disappointed to hear from local families
that they have been thoroughly looted throughout the 1900s. However, the site is
so massive and so little of it has been ... read more

His Dudeness

I just discovered it's been slightly more then a year (2 days to be exact), that
I wrote my last blog. Embarrassing! It also means I haven't really travelled for
two years, not counting my visits to Germany. And that Covid-19 is still a
thing. So this is another Intermezzo blog, which is strange. An Intermezzo blog,
following on a year old Intermezzo blog! But these are weird times we are living
in. On the up side, my carbon footprint is probably the lowest it's been in
years. No flying to far flung destinations, a few train trips with trains
running on green energy (so they claim), and there you go. My contribution to
COP26! During this year a lot has happened. A Christmas and New Year in
Switzerland with my sister, a surprising late snow-stormy ... read more

Morning at Ashnil Samburu Camp

Waddads Travel

I am writing this sitting on the balcony of our tent, finishing my Tusker beer,
and watching the antics of the Black Faced Vervet Monkeys all around me. There
are so many of these little cute monkeys around the camp. We were instructed not
to leave the flaps of the tent open (they close from the inside with a
caribiner) when we’re not in the tent, and to keep the coffee things (mainly the
packets of sugar) in the safe! These little guys will come into your tent if you
leave it open when you leave, and trash the place, mostly searching for the
sugar packets. There is also a very large elephant just down the way a bit,
right in front of the restaurant. I put a short video of him on facebook. And
there ... read more

Shropshire 17 - Shrewsbury part 2- the town walls, Old St Chads and the museum

A thought for all of us

JenGog

After our well earned coffee and toast Sion and I set off in search of the Town
Walls . Wouldnt it be nice to walk around a set of walls just like Chester ?
Well sadly Shrewsburys walls had long gone . Gateways had been removed , all the
towers bar one taken down and the stone used elsewhere and the walls had
disappeared apart from an odd spot here and there . We found the tower known as
the Town Wall Tower just up the road from the Girls school . The girls were
coming out of the doors of an interesting building . They looked a bit scruffy
in their uniforms Mini skirts that were so short they were just like belts . I
thought about mini skirts in the 60's and we wore ... read more

Camping, heat and over 20 different lions, it's Chobe National Park time!

Mama and her 4 months old cubs...magic!

Maisondubonheur

I have to admit, we may not jump continents every quarter anymore, but I'm still
solid late with my blogging. Travel is a state of mind...and when it's not easy
to cross oceans, you always have some cool places to visit closer to home. I was
fortunate enough to visit Victoria Falls area close to ten years ago...but Tanya
hasn't done it yet. Last time, it was an in and out short trip mainly to the
Falls. So today, the priority is actually about Chobe National Park in
Botswana...a first for both of us! Covid means less flights in the region.
British Airways is back to Victoria Falls from Joburg....but that's it. Airlink
fly all over the place, but in small planes. The reality of it...once your
expected flight on Airlink is slightly full...the price of ... read more

Tag 26: Limoges
Europe » France » Limousin » Limoges November 3rd 2021
Spaziergang durch Limoges.

Twag

Aus drei Gründen hat der heutige Tag schlecht begonnen: zum einen konnte ich nur
bis 10:00 frühstücken und daher hat mein Wecker schon um 09:30 geklingelt. Also

A Great Start & End of Bob's Birthday

s v Tsamaya

Well, the next occasion to celebrate was Bob’s birthday on Oct 25th. As we just
got back from our wonderful trip to Cappadocia, I was feeling bad that it
wouldn’t be too exciting. Thankfully, as Bob keeps telling me – when we do these
trips around our birthdays, they are for both of us! The one thing we did know
that would make the day special was getting to reconnect with Darren and Sue.
Darren, we got to know years ago (approx. 40 years ago!) when we all lived in
Botswana. We were so excited to hear from him before we finalized our trip to
Cappadocia so we could coordinate our dates to be sure to be here in Marmaris
when he and Sue would be able to visit. Unknown to me, Darren has been following

Mindil Beach Casino

DaveandIssy

Today’s our last day in Darwin. This also means that it’s our last day with
ready access to a washing machine for quite a while, so I decide to put on a
load. The machine tells me that this will take two and a half hours. I ask Issy
why it takes so long to wash clothes in a machine when I could have washed them
in the sink in a fraction of the time. The look I get suggests that maybe I
should have kept my mouth shut. We head off down to the Darwin Waterfront
Precinct. First stop is the World War 2 oil storage tunnels. Well first stop for
me. Issy decides that maybe tunnels aren’t for for her and heads off instead to
get her nails done. The first Darwin air raid ... read more

Lisbon....Simply Charming
Europe » Portugal » Lisboa October 15th 2021
Pastel de Belem

D MJ Binkley

We immediately liked the feel of Lisbon and could not tell you exactly why.
Could it be that Lisbon is nestled among many hills, which create natural
divisions for little neighborhoods and each with plenty of personality? Or
perhaps that it is next to the water, which is always a natural draw for us? Are
we describing San Francisco? No....this is Lisbon and it's charm grabbed us
immediately. As we drove across the bay on our way back from the lovely town of
Evora, we drank in the scenery and found ourselves eager for our time in Lisbon
to begin because it would be spent with friends. World Travelers Unite Our first
night in town would prove to be a great one, as we were having dinner with our
retired travel agent Angeline and her husband ... read more

Walking in England - Newport, Monday 1999 August 23
Europe » United Kingdom » England » Isle of Wight » Newport August 23rd 1999
Teasel

beentouring

We started off near a prison today, in Parkhurst Forest. From how people refer
to it, I assume the prison is a major establishment. Certainly the “forest
paths” are wide enough to take a vehicle if needed. There are narrow, untended
paths angling off this maintained one. Betty Wood volunteered to be “back
marker”, to keep track of stragglers. As I was videoing flowers, I asked her if
she knew the names, and she did – every one. This made an interesting walk for
me, although the others may not have enjoyed it too much because there was very
little to see. We walked quite a way through a town – quite ordinary, except for
the piglets that looked so cute. After this we tramped along various types of
paths to the River Medina . Here ... read more
