NFHS Rules Now Require Protective Eyewear
Rumors that the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)
would, for the first time, not follow the recommendations of its own field
hockey rules committee have been confirmed with the announcement that high
school field hockey players will be required to wear protective eyewear,
effective with the 2011-12 season. The rule change will generate approximately
$5,000,000 in sales for those selling protective eyeware products.

Shootouts to make FIH debut
One of the biggest changes to FIH Tournament Regulations is about to be put to
the test with the Penalty Shoot-out Competition replacing the Penalty Stroke
Competition to determine the result of tied classification matches. Further, the
two-minute suspension for a green card has been made permanent and the
experimental rule about a defender breaking the line or an attacker entering the
circle too early at a penalty corner and having to go to the half-way line, has
been made permanent.

NFHS Rules More Aligned than ever with Rules of Hockey
With the adoption of the requirement that the ball must leave the circle on a
penalty circle before a goal can be scored AND umpires are now able to penalize
misconduct with an extended yellow card the NFHS rules are more aligned than
ever with Rules of Hockey. Some important differences still remain.

I’m At The College BUT Where’s The Field?
It’s your first appointment to officiate at the University of XYZ. You go to
the university website, put the address into Google maps, calculate drive time,
printout the directions and head off with time to spare. The problem is, when
you get to the campus you learn you're not even close to where field hockey
competitions are played. Good news, now there’s an app with the answer to,
"Where's the field?"

Stories from the Field
Survey Results To Thought Provoking Video (and new survey)
At the end of the traditional fall field hockey season in the USA, a video was
posted by a field hockey fan on YouTube showing that play was restarted
following a goal while the team that scored the goal was in an NFL-like huddle
and not ready to defend. UmpireHockey.com decided to link to the video and allow
readers to comment on the event. The decision to ask whether the umpire made the
right or wrong decision to blow his/her whistle was subsequently applauded and
criticized by members of the field hockey community. Share your opinion on that
and whether time should be stopped after goals in field hockey.
