EUROBANK, NBG REMAIN PROFITABLE, NPL SHRINKS

Eurobank and National Bank, Greece’s largest lenders by market capitalization,
made gains in the first half as they removed more bad loans from their balance
sheets.

Eurobank reported a net profit of €941 million, up from €190 million in the
first half of 2021.

Earnings were boosted by the sale of a majority stake in the merchant
acquisition business to Card-Link.



CEO Phokion Karabias said the bank’s string of strong performances has prompted
management to revise its goals for this year higher.

The non-performing loan ratio fell to 5.9%. Peer National (NBG) reported a
decline in net profit compared to the first half of last year on the back of
lower trading income.

NBG, 40% owned by the country’s HFSF bank bailout fund, reported a net profit of
€490 million from €645 million in the first half of 2021.




The group’s NPE ratio improved to 6.3% from 6.7% at the end of March, CEO Pavlos
Mylonas said the quality of its balance sheet was approaching the level of its
European peers, and high inflation was creating new bad debts. showed no signs
of recovery.



NBG announced on Friday that it has agreed to sell 95% of the mezzanine and
junior notes of its €1 billion securitized bad debt portfolio to a fund managed
by Bracebridge Capital. [Reuters]
