 * Workers as consumers and the talent crisis, staffing executives weigh in –
   Executive Forum

From seeing the worker as a consumer to the talent crisis, remote work and
more, leaders at four of the largest US staffing firms discussed issues
impacting the industry during a keynote panel Tuesday at Staffing Industry
Analysts’ Executive Forum North America in Austin, Texas. But panelist Peter
Quigley, president and CEO of Kelly, said he probably wouldn’t use the term,
“talent crisis.”“I think we certainly have challenges,” Quigley said. “I look
around this room and think about the quality of the companies and people and
the innovation and creativity. I think the challenge we have is something we
can certainly overcome.”Still, those challenges are real.In the short term,
people are staying on the sidelines for health reasons and school closures
—but that’s a temporary situation, he said …

 * US private sector adds 475,000 jobs in February, beats expectations but still
   smallest gain since August

US nonfarm private employment rose by 475,000 jobs in February with gains in
all sectors, according to the ADP National Employment Report released today.
The leisure and hospitality sector posted the largest boost in February with
a gain of 170,000 jobs.Large businesses added 552,000 jobs and midsize
businesses — those with 50-499 employees — added 18,000 jobs. However, small
businesses struggled to compete for workers and lost 96,000 jobs in
February.“Hiring remains robust but [was] capped by reduced labor supply
post-pandemic. Last month, large companies showed they are well-poised to
compete with higher wages and benefit offerings, and posted the strongest
reading since the early days of the pandemic recovery,” said Nela Richardson,
chief economist at ADP. “Small companies los …

 * Recruiters’ and students’ perceptions of career readiness don’t align: NACE

Employers and college students agree on the most important competencies
students need to develop to successfully enter the workforce, but they are
divided on the proficiency of new college graduates in these key areas,
according to research conducted by the National Association of Colleges and
Employers.“The employer perception doesn’t align with how college students
perceive their own proficiency in the eight career readiness competencies,”
said Shawn VanDerziel, NACE executive director. “In nearly all of the
competencies, college students believe they are more proficient — in some
cases, by a significant margin — than do their potential employers.”Employers
responding to a recent NACE survey deemed critical thinking, communication

 * UK – Randstad-run National Tutoring Programme removes target of reaching
two-thirds of poorer pupils (Schools Week)

Tutoring providers in the UK will no longer have to ensure their programme
reaches at least two-thirds of poorer pupils after the target was ditched,
reports Schools Week. Last year, the National Tutoring Programme was awarded
to Randstad for 2021/2022. The staffing firm reportedly put in a cheaper
bid than its only rival in the tendering process, raising concerns that the
government has prioritised cost over quality and that the firm had little
experience in tutoring. Randstad said ditching the target would “remove
complexities”. Randstad has now told the NTP’s 56 tutor organisations they
are “no longer required to ensure that 65% of their tuition support is
provided” to children receiving the pupil premium. This followed feedback from
school leaders and tutor organisations on ho …

three employers in a standard month, reports Business News Wales citing
research from Indeed Flex. Indeed Flex’s survey of nearly 4,000 temporary
workers found that having the flexibility to schedule work around their
personal commitments was a critical factor that temps take into account when
choosing where to work, alongside both the pay rate and job’s location. The
number of temporary workers using the Flex platform has risen by 104%
compared with this time last year, in part due to the re-opening of the
economy. Many have also been drawn by the freedom to choose both their
working hours and the days they work, that temping offers. Indeed also found
that 34% of temporary workers work for two employers in a standa …

Malaysia’s federal government is set to table a landmark amendment bill at
the lower house of Parliament, that could permanently compel gig-based tech
companies to provide their workers the rights and privileges enjoyed by
formal employees, reports Malay Mail. The amendment bill, among others,
proposes six standards that would help define an employee and their relation
to the employer under the ‘Employment Act 1955’, a key provision that may
force many of today’s online-based companies to compensate workers with
benefits that come with formal employment, like health insurance and pension
