Yokohama, Japan, 13 February 2023: ITTO deeply mourns former staff member Mr
John Leigh, who died in his home city of Lima, Peru, on Sunday 12 February 2023,
aged 69. Mr Leigh, who joined the ITTO Secretariat in 1992, served as
Conservation Officer from 1995 until his retirement in 2016.

WORLD WETLANDS DAY CALLS FOR RESTORATION EFFORT—ITTO COMMITTED TO ONGOING
CONTRIBUTION

Yokohama, Japan, 2 February 2023: Wetlands, often called the “kidneys of the
Earth”, are crucial in the fight against climate change, yet they are being
degraded and lost at alarming rates. On World Wetlands Day, we highlight ITTO’s
work to restore and upscale the sustainable use of tropical wetlands such as
mangroves, swamps and marshes.

SUSTAINABLE TROPICAL FORESTRY: A PATHWAY TO A HEALTHY PLANET

Yokohama, 30 December 2022: The latest Tropical Forest Update reports on the
58th session of the International Tropical Timber Council, held in November. It
also features an opinion piece on the European Union’s proposed new regulation
for imported deforestation, as well as evaluations of ITTO’s work to promote
sustainable tropical forestry as a pathway towards a healthier planet.

COP15 SIDE-EVENT PRESENTS GLOBAL LESSONS ON BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION IN
TROPICAL FOREST LANDSCAPES

Yokohama, Japan, 20 December 2022: A side-event convened by ITTO, the Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Institute for Global Environmental
Strategies (IGES) at the 15th CBD Conference of the Parties (COP) has shared
best practices on forest landscape restoration and sustainable forest management
(SFM) in the Amazon, Mekong and Congo to improve livelihoods and biodiversity
outcomes.

ITTO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SPEAKS AT CBD HIGH-LEVEL SEGMENT, URGES MORE INVESTMENT
IN TROPICAL FORESTS

Montreal, Canada, 19 December 2022: ITTO Executive Director Sheam Satkuru has
urged delegates at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD) to invest in tropical forests to “ensure the
sustained longevity of the sustainable use of biodiversity, water resources, and
carbon sinks”.

INFORMATION-SHARING

Yokohama, Japan, 9 December 2022: Timber production and operations shrunk in
November in Brazil, the Congo, Gabon, Malaysia and Mexico, according to the
first Global Timber Index (GTI) monthly report, released yesterday. According to
the report, factors in the sector’s below-average performance include a global
economic contraction, declining international demand, and the rainy season in
Africa.
