WELCOME TO YOUCHECK! PROJECT

The goal of the YouCheck! project is to raise awareness of the public at large
and the education and media literacy community about disinformation and “fake
news” as a threat to democracy.

YouCheck! aims more specifically to empower European citizens with the latest
advances in image and video verification so that they can be actors of their own
resilience strategies when confronted to information disorders.

YouCheck! will answer such goals by enhancing the InVID plug-in and providing
pedagogical scenarios and self-paced tutorials for wider adoption. Fostering
citizens’ agency with such technologies and adopting a solution-oriented
approach to tackle disinformation appears a most efficient way to change both
their understanding of the so-called “fake news” phenomenon and their daily
behaviour with regard to information. For such purposes, image and video
checking technologies, nowadays reserved to professionals, need to be easily
accessible and usable by teachers, students and the public at large through a
user-friendly environment as created by YouCheck!.

The project will capitalize on two existing independent EU-funded projects, the
free verification plug-in designed by Agence France-Presse within the Horizon
2020 project InVID (2016-2018) and free online training resources developed
within the project ECO-LEARNING by partner Savoir*Devenir (France) and UNED
(Spain).

The effectiveness of this approach to increase students and citizens media
literacy and modify behaviours will be evaluated by the Department of education
at Uppsala University (Sweden) in collaboration with National University for
Political Studies and Public Administration (SNSPA) in Romania. Finally the hope
is to develop the Youcheck! community of users across Europe and beyond,
promoting a human-rights based view of Media Literacy to fight disinformation
and promote democracy.
