HEISING WILDERICH

PARTNER & ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - BOSTON CONSULTING GROUP

"THE WORLD IN TURMOIL? MASTERING THE MANUFACTURING AND DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
STRATEGY AND OPTIMIZATION AND ENSURING PRODUCT SUPPLY"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Dr.-Ing. Wilderich Heising is Partner and Associate Director at Boston
Consulting Group. He is a core member of BCG's Innovation Center for. He
focusses on advanced manufacturing and supply chain. He leads the topic of
manufacturing and distribution network strategy and optimization globally for
BCG

Product supply networks have a critical role in helping producers fulfill their
value proposition, such as offering high-quality products at low cost or running
fast and flexible operations. For several decades, the input parameters and
economic assumptions underlying network design and optimization have generally
been stable. Manufacturers have typically scaled and located factories and
warehouses to strike the right balance between cost efficiency, service levels,
and growth. In recent years, however, the resiliency and sustainability of a
company’s product supply network have become more important. This shift has
undermined the assumptions that led many companies to design a global network
with manufacturing hubs in low-cost locations. Indeed, what was once an ideal
network could be a competitive disadvantage today. To optimize their network for
the new reality, manufacturers need to rethink it—scaling and locating
facilities in a way that builds resilience and promotes sustainability without
unduly sacrificing cost efficiency, service levels, and growth. Advanced
analytics tools can help producers determine the best network design.
Implementing a new network design requires several years, so manufacturers face
an urgent need to get started

JEFFREY WHITFORD

VICE PRESIDENT OF SUSTAINABILITY & SOCIAL BUSINESS INNOVATION - MERCK LIFE
SCIENCE

"CREATING DIFFERENTIATION THROUGH SUSTAINABILITY INNOVATION"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Jeffrey Whitford is the Vice President of Sustainability & Social Business
Innovation for the Life Science business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, a
leading global science and technology company committed to enhancing the human
experience through curiosity and sustainability. In this role, Jeffrey is a
strategic partner to the Life Science business to accelerate, embed and amplify
sustainability principles and impact across its business operations to drive new
business models, margin expansion, revenue generation and cost savings. This is
all with one goal in mind: reducing the business’ impact on the environment
and enabling customers to make more sustainable choices. While under Jeffrey’s
leadership, to date, the company has achieved a 33% reduction in Scope 1+2
emissions, aiming for 100% by 2040 and a 30% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by
2030.

This talk will examine how the Life Science business of Merck embeds
sustainability innovations across the product lifecycle, and how the company
implemented a design thinking approach to sustainable product design—both of
which are having a “sustainability multiplier effect—by helping enable a
greener supplier chain. Through SHAPE, its Design for Sustainability (DfS)
framework, the company follows a comprehensive approach to increasing the
sustainability of its products. DfS is an industry-first framework that keeps
sustainability at the forefront of each stage of product life cycles to minimize
environmental and health impact and improve product performance. Since its
launch, DfS has incorporated additional sustainability criteria and established
a scorecard system to consistently plan, track, and report sustainability
improvements to customers. In 2022, DfS was fully embedded into the company’s
product development processes (PDP)—ensuring that each newly developed product
considers sustainability criteria, driving sustainability holistically into the
product portfolio. Products with significant sustainability improvements are
identified as its Greener Alternative Product portfolio. The company has brought
2,500-plus greener products and solutions to market, including the award-winning
CyreneTM, a revolutionary alternative to two fossil-fuel-derived solvents
typically used in plastics, fibers and adhesives. The DfS standards guide R&D
processes by introducing sustainability deliverables at each step of the PDP. As
a result, this sustainability framework enables Merck customers to make more
sustainable decisions for their business and reach their sustainability goals by
reducing their carbon footprint. It’s a sustainability multiplier effect that
maximizes impact by helping enable a greener supply chain. This design thinking
approach followed by Merck is scalable and applicable to companies of different
sizes and in different industry verticals. Jeffrey will share useful tips and
strategies—including internal buy-in— to implement this approach.

DAMIAN COSTELLO

HEAD OF LIFE SCIENCES & TECHNOLOGY - EXPLEO GROUP

"“CAVEAT EMPTOR – BUYER BEWARE: 5 THINGS DIGITAL VENDORS DON’T WANT
MANUFACTURING BUYERS TO KNOW.”"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

This event sees the launch of Expleo’s flagship offering to the Irish MedTech
and BioPharma Industries -Site Transformation Assurance. It is the brainchild of
the new Head of Life Sciences & Technology at Expleo Group, Damian Costello.
Damian has been a consultant for more than 30 years graduating in Industrial
Design in 1993. He spent his first ten years designing electronic products and
setting up Asian supply chains for them. This let to ten years in Innovation
Consulting primarily in Pharma and MedTech, which led to ten in Strategy and
Management Consulting for local and global executive teams in the FDI
Manufacturing Sector.
For years Damian has been warning that the Irish MedTech sector was missing out
on the digital revolution in healthcare. He warned that ‘Galway could easily
become the Detroit of Medical Devices’, but the sector was among the slowest of
all to react. Covid, however, changed all that. Unable to deny reality,
questions changed from ‘why should we care?’ to ‘where do we start?’ and ‘who
can we trust’.
Damian didn’t have the answer until he found Expleo. Formed after the 2018
merger of a French Engineering firm and a German software company, Expleo, like
Damian, has one foot in the physical world, and the other in the digital world.
With 19,000 experts worldwide across all technologies, it is big enough to
provide global support, but small enough to take local sites seriously. Growing
to 800 experts in Ireland since the 1980s, Expleo seemed a great answer to
questions that just won’t go away.

1. Digitalisation is a bit of a scam; subscription models mean you end up paying
to use your own data 2. Digital Buyers don’t trust Digital Suppliers and have
tools to keep them honest 3. Cloud data storage brings transparency that may
allow corporate types to micromanage your site 4. Internal competitors will get
unfettered access to all your productivity secrets 5. The good news is it is not
all about digital technology - without the real work, they have nothing. You run
a plant, digital technology can help you run it better, only you can decide what
better is. It is only when you are clear about where you want to get to, that
you can engage with digital vendors without fear of being ripped off. The
problem with digital transformation is that the transformation is not digital.
It’s your plant, and your people that are going to be transformed. Operations
people have allowed digital people to control the narrative until now. Who are
they to tell you what your plant needs to transform into? Who are they to tell
you what your staff need to become. You wouldn’t allow a machine vendor to
dictate what equipment you put on your shop floor, so don’t let those with a
vested interest in what you spend tell you what to buy. If you are going to
allow digital people onto your site, make it clear that they work for you, you
don’t work for them. Remember who is paying for all of this and remember the
first rule of business ‘Caveat Emptor’ - buyer beware.

Contamination in the form of non-viable particles and viable particles can find
its way into production process environments via natural routes that may go
undetected. In general the source of these contaminates are multifold in the
life science industry, here are just some of those sources: ? Transfer of
materials & equipment in and out of critical production areas ? Personnel
behaviours ? Poor pant design ? Inadequate training of personnel ? Insufficient
cleaning & gowning procedures As few things are more important than high levels
of cleanliness in the life science industry, this presentation seeks to provide
a transformative roadmap -using the relevant sections of Annex 1 as a platform-
to reduce/ eliminate potential sources of contamination through collaborative
risk assessments and mitigation plans.

Injection moulding tools can achieve greater efficiency and quality by
incorporating embedded sensors. While traditional fabrication methods struggled
with complex internal geometries, the advent of 3D printing revolutionised this
limitation. In this study, a wireless surface acoustic wave (SAW) temperature
sensor was successfully integrated into a stainless steel 3D-printed mould. This
advancement allows for real-time monitoring of critical process parameters, such
as temperature, enhancing control over the injection moulding process.
Additionally, novel venting designs were introduced using the same 3D printing
technique, effectively preventing defects in the final products. These
developments signify a significant leap forward in injection moulding
technology, promising faster production rates and improved product quality.

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Prem is a seasoned management and technology consulting leader with 22 years of
extensive experience in advising client executive management on complex business
process and technology transformation solutions across US, EMEA and APAC
markets. He possesses diverse experience across audit, consulting and technology
covering product development, product management, go-to-market strategy,
business development, pre-sales, delivery and solutioning having worked across
Manufacturing, Retail, Banking, Insurance and Life Sciences industries.

ESG: It's all about the data. Some think ESG is necessary to manage 21st century
risks, while others say it merely obstructs business. However, the companies we
surveyed saw effective use of ESG data to accelerate profitability and growth.
Top-performing companies don’t make trade-offs between sustainability, social
responsibility, good governance, and shareholder value; they achieve all these
outcomes at once. When ESG data is viewed as a vehicle for driving business
value, it generates insights that create opportunities and boost performance.
But only a few companies have reached this level. Rather than strategically
harnessing ESG data—using it as a tool for identifying opportunities to
innovate and improve—many organizations are narrowly focused on meeting
immediate compliance demands. To deliver better business results, business
leaders need to see ESG transparency through a new lens.

MICHAEL GUILFOYLE

SERVICES & SUPPORT MANAGER - PILZ IRELAND

"THE NEW MACHINERY REGULATION - SELF EVOLVING MACHINERY AND INDUSTRIAL SECURITY"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Michael Guilfoyle has worked in the field of safety technology and its
associated regulations for 20 years at national, European and International
levels. He is a supervisor on the Marie Curie H2020 project Collaborative
Intelligence of Safety Critical Systems researching data analytics and AI to
create novel human-in-the-loop automation paradigms to support decision making
and/or anticipate critical safety scenarios. He is also a Certified Machinery
Safety Expert (TUV Nord) and a Certified Expert in CE Marking (TUV Nord).

The new EU Machinery Regulation which was put in to force in 2023 and becomes
mandatory in January 2027 takes up the new subject of “security” where
Article 20 refers to the EU Regulation (EU) 2019/881. Also, the Regulation
addresses a new term “self-evolving machinery”. In future manufacturers must
designate parts of their software that are relevant to conformity and provide
protection against accidental as well as deliberate modification. What’s more,
in future, each machine must collect evidence of a legitimate or illegitimate
intervention in the software, actually record it in other words. The term
“self-evolving machinery” is nothing other than another way of saying the
term “artificial intelligence”. Firstly, this subject influences the
question as to whether a notified body needs to be engaged. Secondly, the
subject belongs in a risk assessment in any case, because modified software
could entail new or even higher risks! In an extreme case, consideration must be
given as to whether self-learning software can potentially result in a new
machine. An extremely interesting subject, not just for the manufacturer, but
also for the notified bodies. Bases for assessment must first be established.
Manufacturers and operators of manufacturing facilities have until January 2027
to familiarise themselves with the new EU Machinery Regulation. This talk will
explain the changes in the new Machinery Regulation, as compared with the
Machinery Directive.

Modern Plant to provide end users with problem-solving safety solutions in
Ireland. He is an industry expert regarding safety shower regulatory compliance.

We will discuss the relevant standard for safety shower and eyewash stations,
EN15154, which covers availability, installation, operation, performance,
maintenance, and testing and ANSI Z358, as many MNC operations, must have
compliance with the US ANSI Z358 standard is a corporate and regulatory
requirement. These standards define the ‘minimum acceptable’ to meet
regulation. At the same time, this may still have significant deficiencies in
the context of best practice or duty of care. Much of the required investment in
H&S is predicated on the ‘just in case’ and ‘hopefully never needed’
principle. However, if and when needed, it must perform as required. Failure to
perform when required may not only be the more costly consequence of
underinvestment in this equipment but could also prove fatal. We will discuss
the optimum solutions to mitigate the risk of harm.

BARRY TWOMEY

CENTRE DIRECTOR - ADVANCE CENTRE, UCD

"THE SKILLS TO SUPPORT DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION"

Speaker Bio Synopsis

Dr. Barry Twomey has been the Centre Director for the Advance Centre since May
2021. Through the HCI Pillar 3 funded Advance Centre for Professional Learning
and the modular, accredited, learning approach, he hopes to enable the digital
transformation for individuals and organisations across multiple industries.

Digital transformation has become a critical part of so many industries now and,
with change happening so fast, many professionals working both in and outside
the tech sector will need to upskill. This starts with understanding what
digital transformation means for a company or sector. The next question is: what
skills are required to address Digital Transformation and are they already
in-house? Outside of this, where do we go to get these skills and how do we
develop of staff to re-skill or up-skill in these key areas. New technologies
may replace certain jobs, but what is more important, is to see what new jobs
and roles these technologies can enable.

"The content will emphasise the following: • The need for a human-centred
approach to innovation in manufacturing to transition to Industry 5.0 • The
importance of designing end-to-end solutions (or experiences) rather than
isolated and fragmented components • The importance of non-tangible value such
as personalisation and customisation • The role of integrating digital
services in the manufacturing value chain • Discuss some challenges faced by
industry and critical success factors to overcome these challenges It will
synthesise some of the lessons learned from 25 years of applied research in
manufacturing systems. I will NOT focus on the details of academic research.
Instead, I will share some salient and hopefully interesting aspects our
research team has learned from working closely with manufacturing organisations
such as Fidelity Investments, Rent the Runway, Expleo, Teleflex, Medtronic,
Stryker, Boston Scientific. It will be engaging, visionary, inspiring and
peppered with real-world examples. I will show lots of pictures and very few
numbers. There will be no graphs – I promise! "
