YOUTH JUSTICE FELLOWSHIP

STATUS: Part time (12–20 hours per week)
LOCATION: Oakland, California; open to remote locations across the state
PAY: $20–23 per hour, depending on your location in California
DURATION: 10-month fellowship, expected start March 2024 through December 2024

Do you want to help make a difference in social service systems? Are you
passionate about helping to make our systems more effective, equitable, and
just?

Evident Change is a national nonprofit that uses data and research to build more
just and equitable social systems. We believe that systems should help people
reach their greatest potential, not create barriers to their success. To do
this, power must be shifted back to the communities that these systems say they
serve. Evident Change envisions both research partnerships that center
communities as experts on their own experiences and systems that are built
around the knowledge and expertise of those who are directly affected by the
systems.

Our work focuses on improving social systems related to child welfare,
education, justice, and protection services so these complex social systems can
work better for the children, teens, families, and communities they are intended
to serve. Working for Evident Change opens career opportunities where
individuals can support long-lasting systems change.

WHAT IS THE YOUTH JUSTICE FELLOWSHIP?

Evident Change’s Youth Justice Fellowship is a career opportunity for young
adults who have firsthand experiences with the juvenile justice and/or child
protection systems to exercise and further develop their leadership skills by
partnering with Evident Change and community leaders to reimagine social systems
for the future. The Youth Justice Fellows provide consultation and decision
making to ensure system improvement efforts center the knowledge and expertise
of those with lived experience.

In this position, fellows will design and complete a Participatory Action
Research (PAR) project that proposes a community-driven solution to issues
affecting young adults who are impacted by the foster care or juvenile justice
system in California. Fellows will review and analyze system policies, gather
community feedback on identified issues and experiences, and build a set of
recommendations or community actions to create more just and equitable systems.
Fellows also will have the opportunity to work with jurisdictions across the
country on system improvement projects to improve their practice and outcomes in
key areas.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

We invite young adults in California, ages 18 to 26, who have personal
experience with the juvenile justice system and/or foster care and who have a
passion for social justice issues and system change. Candidates with experience
or interest in working in community organizing or advocacy, public policy, and
system improvement efforts are strongly encouraged to apply. Come join our work
to build more equitable social systems that support the communities they are
meant to serve.

The pay range for this position is $20 to $23 per hour, depending on your
location in California. We offer paid sick leave, mileage reimbursement, and a
monthly stipend (up to $50) to support internet and phone costs for our “work
from anywhere” culture.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORKWEEK LOOK LIKE?

Get ready to:
 * Complete training and skill development in the areas of policy review,
   community research, and advocacy.
 * Meet with your project team weekly (via Zoom or another video platform) to
support shared project work and coordination.
 * Lead or co-facilitate activities to gather community feedback on a specific
issue and select community research methods to use, including focus groups,
   surveys, or listening sessions.
 * Design and implement a community research project focused on a local issue
that impacts youth and families involved in the California foster care or
   juvenile justice system.
 * Build a set of recommendations or community actions for local system change.
 * Provide support and consultation on system improvement projects with
jurisdictions across the United States through activities such as conducting
policy reviews, building and delivering trainings, facilitating focus groups,
   and other system change activities.
 * Participate in additional team meetings, training, and individual supervision
   as needed.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM OUR RECRUITMENT PROCESS?

We work directly with local community partners to share this opportunity with
those who have demonstrated leadership in related fields. Interested candidates
complete an application through an online portal. If you have a resume, you may
upload it as you apply; however, not providing a resume will not disqualify you
from consideration.

Selected candidates will be invited to move to the next stage, which involves a
brief one-way video-style interview. This step provides an opportunity to learn
more about the program, allowing both you and Evident Change to determine
whether the position is right for you.

At the next stage, selected candidates are invited to participate in a panel
interview, with questions provided in advance. We will request that you are
prepared to share a copy of your resume at this stage.  We are looking forward
to meeting you!

Once Evident Change extends an offer to the selected candidates, the offer will
be contingent upon a background and reference check.  We conduct a background
check because much of our contracted work with various jurisdictions requires
that employees working on projects have a criminal history check.  Evident
Change believes that criminal history does not and should not automatically
disqualify an individual from employment.

JOIN US!

If you are ready to work for change, and if our mission and values resonate with
you, we invite you to apply. For consideration, please apply by January 22,
2024. Applications will be reviewed and selected for the one-way video-style
interview on a rolling basis no later than January 26, 2024. If you need
assistance with an accommodation due to a disability, please email
HR@evidentchange.org or call (800) 306-6223.

We welcome all qualified applicants regardless of race, national ancestry, age,
religion, sex, ability, skin color, medical condition, marital status, sexual
orientation, gender identity, or any other protected category. We strive to be
welcoming to all applicants. Diversity is more than a legal requirement for us;
it is one of our core values that we center in our work and our culture.
