DIY PLATE RACK ACCENT WALL

Have you seen these wall plate racks? I just love them, but I didn’t want one
constructed permanently onto the wall. So, I decided to build a removeable one
and now it can be moved somewhere else or sold if I’m ever done with it. This
wall treatment is a wonderful way to display items and add some interest to your
wall. The wall plate rack was popular and common back in the 1950s and 60s, but
it’s been making a comeback for a while now.

This wall treatment works with so many styles because you can design the rack to
look cohesive with your style. You can make it rustic, farmhouse, cottagecore,
traditional, contemporary, vintage, and even modern. I’m excited to decorate
this space for the holidays and even use it to show off Quinn’s artwork. There
are so many ways to decorate a wall plate rack, but before you can do the fun
part of decorating, you first have to build the thing.

Once you measure the wall to create a plate rack for, sketch your design and
create a cut list. I used clamps to cut multiple boards at a time, the exact
same size. This saves time and guarantees accuracy.

Lay out the plate rack and mark where to drill pocket holes. I made sure the
pocket holes were on top of the shelves for the shelves above my eyes, and below
the shelves for the ones chest high and lower. Using pocket hole construction
allows me to build the rack and then attach it to the wall. It still has a
built-in look, but only needs four screws to attach it.

You can drill pocket holes with a $20 Kreg jig, or you can use this beast. It's
very ergonomical and easy to use. I hook up the shop vac to the back and it
drills from the underside. The clamps hold the guide in place and the board too.
Once each board is done, be sure to place them back into the shape of your plate
rack.

Connect the outside boards first. I use a Kreg clamp because one end goes into a
pocket hole and the other end is flat. The clamp holds the pieces together
perfectly. Add a little wood glue and then screw the boards together.

The next step is attaching the inside shelves. I cut a scrap board the exact
length of the shelf height to make it easy to attach each end of the shelf
without it shifting. After drilling one side, just flip it over and attach the
other side of the shelves. Finally attach the installation supports. You can see
these boards just a few steps down when I'm installing the plate rack. The
pocket holes are drilled behind so they're hidden.

I gave the assembled plate rack a light sanding and then brushed on prestain
wood conditioner. Once the conditioner is set, I used a staining sponge to apply
one coat of Varathane Early Americana. Once dry, I brushed on Behr white wash
pickling stain, and then wiped it off after several minutes. I recommend testing
out this combination on your wood before applying it to your finished project.

Check for studs, if none, use drywall anchors. Either way, predrill pilot holes
and then use appropriate screws. I attached four screws to hang this plate rack
and it's completely sturdy. If you don't want the screw heads showing, you can
countersink when you drill pilot holes, but I didn't mind the hardware showing.

The final step is adding the cut and stained plate rails. I add these last so
that the entire rack is easy to handle during the install. I found this simple
yet decorative trim for just $0.76 a foot at The Home Depot. You could use
gallery rails, double rails, thicker boards, decorative trim... the
possibilities are endless.

Thank you for checking out this post! There are some additional tips on the
YouTube video, make sure to have the audio on to hear it. If you love DIY,
decorating, and party ideas, be sure to subscribe to my blog: 804 Sycamore.

This shot shows just how low profile this wall feature is. It adds beauty and
functionality on a transition wall.

Have you thought about maybe framing the light switches with cute frames to
make them look like part of the art?

Love this idea. I wish I had an area free to do this.

I have never been huge fan of plate racks until I saw your take on this. It’s
perfect. Stands in its own from decorative point but does not dominate the
room. Thanks for sharing your creativity and giving inspiration
