President Biden took credit for avoiding a rail strike before the election, and
he even needled us on Twitter for doubting him. Well, now workers are rejecting
the new contract he pushed, and Congress may have to step in to head off a
destructive strike.

The odds of a strike rose Monday after the two largest rail-worker unions
announced votes on the pending labor agreement. The decision was split: The
engineers union backed the deal 54% to 46%, while conductors and brakemen
rejected it 50.9% to 49.1%. A few hundred votes made the difference in the
latter, 28,000-member group, but close doesn’t count. “It’s now back to the
bargaining table,” the head of the conductors union said Monday.
