APRIL SHOCKS ECONOMISTS WITH 235,000 JOBS ADDED

Following three months of slower job growth, April’s Job Report stunned economic
experts as the labor market grew by 235,000 jobs – 50,000 more jobs than what
was predicted (185,000). Many other markets have reacted well to this news of a
robust economy as the DOW futures rose 200 points and S&P futures increased by
0.7%.

Historically, stock markets in the US have fallen upon news of job growth, due
mostly to imminent rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. But April markets have
responded more favorably, signaling that we may have avoided a recession or, at
the very least, will only experience a mild economic downturn.

Jerome Powell, chair of the Federal Reserve, shared similar sentiments, saying:
“There are some signs that supply and demand in the labor market are coming back
into balance.” He also revealed that he thinks it is more likely that the US
will evade a recession but that it’s still possible “that we will have what I
hope would be a mild recession.”

UNEMPLOYMENT LOWEST RECORDED IN HISTORY

In another sign that we may be in the clear of a recession, the unemployment
rate dropped to 3.4% in April (vs. 3.6% expected). This ties the record set in
May 1969 for the lowest unemployment rate in US history. The unemployment rates
for all working groups regardless of age, gender, and race remained stable in
April.

The labor force participation rate for April came in at 62.6% with over 171,000
more workers than recorded in April 2022. This uptick in participation is
largely among prime-age workers (age 25-54), further indicating future stability
for the US economy.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES SAW BIG GAINS

For the past six months, the professional services industry averaged a monthly
gain of 25,000 jobs. April saw this number almost double as 45,300 positions
were added in professional, technical, and scientific services. Other big
winners include health care and social services with a combined 64,200 jobs
added and the leisure and hospitality industry with 31,000 jobs added.

Despite reports of layoffs in the construction industry, the sector saw little
change in April, as did manufacturing, wholesale trade, retail trade, and
warehousing/transportation sectors.

WHAT’S NEXT?

April’s Job Report comes just two days after the Federal Reserve announced its
10th interest rate hike in a year. However, news of a robust economy and stable
markets will signify a change in strategy for America’s central banking system.

Powell, for the first time in months, has not signified any future rate
increases following a BLS Jobs Report release, instead stating: “We will be
driven by incoming data, meeting by meeting.” Watch this space to see how the
Fed reacts month-by-month and how interest rates are impacted.
