INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY -- 12 AUGUST 2024

Statement of the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity,
Astrid Schomaker, on the occasion of the International Day of the World's
Indigenous Peoples: This year we acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of
young people to shaping a sustainable future through the use of digital
technology.  As “digital natives”, digital technology to them is like a blank
canvas. The potential of innovation knows no boundaries.  We need their energy
and innovation to respond to the crisis afflicting our planet—a crisis in which
biodiversity loss interacts with climate change and pollution, putting the
future of humanity in harm’s way. We must make space for them to help us find
the solutions we need. But believing in their potential is not enough.
Disparities in access to technology persist, particularly in low-income
countries and among young women. The SDGs, which address those disparities,
among other challenges, constitute the umbrella blueprint...

WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT-- 17 JUNE 2024

This year’s World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought spotlights land
stewardship.  The theme – “United for land. Our Legacy. Our Future.” – is a
recognition that sustainable land management is critical to providing a healthy
and sustainable future for all.  This is a responsibility that transcends
generations.  Our ancestors cared for the land because they recognized its
value.  Today, it is our duty to safeguard land for the next generations.  Young
people must be at the centre of our thinking, and they must be at the centre of
action.  We must also recognize the pivotal role of indigenous peoples and local
communities in land stewardship. Their land rights and meaningful participation
in decision-making must be front and centre.  All parts of society must be able
to contribute to sustainable land stewardship. These are powerful notions that
can be found at the core of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity
Framework,...

WORLD OCEANS DAY-- 8 JUNE 2024

The ocean sustains life on our planet and is central to the healthy functioning
of nearly all of Earth’s processes. It is the world’s largest ecosystem, home to
nearly one million known species, and contains tremendous untapped potential for
scientific discovery. Unexplored ocean ecosystems hold undiscovered species and
important new medicines, vaccines, food, energy, and more.  But ocean ecosystems
are under threat from climate change, pollution and overexploitation among other
drivers of biodiversity loss. If we don’t act now, we won’t have any healthy
ocean ecosystems left to explore. Work under the Convention on Biological
Diversity to describe ecologically or biologically significant marine areas has
enhanced our understanding for parts of the ocean that are most crucial to
healthy, functioning ecosystems.  But science and knowledge will only take us
part of the way. We need to act on this knowledge. We have seen that
well-structured approaches to conservation a...

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE WORLD'S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES-- 9 AUGUST 2024

Statement of the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity,
Astrid Schomaker, on the occasion of the International Day of the World's
Indigenous Peoples: On behalf of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological
Diversity, I am pleased to join this year’s commemoration of the International
Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples to recognize the contribution of
Indigenous Peoples to the protection of nature and the well-being of humanity.
Indigenous Peoples in voluntary isolation and initial contact are custodians of
biodiversity and rich cultural and linguistic diversity that nurtures human
heritage.  Their close relationship with their natural environment, rooted in
their traditional knowledge, provides important lessons the world must heed in
promoting the conservation of biodiversity and in the mitigation of the impacts
of climate change. But they must reckon with relentless encroachment on their
territories and rising pressures that pose high ris...

THREE FACTS ABOUT THE SUSTAINABLE OCEAN INITIATIVE GLOBAL DIALOGUE AND THE KMGBF

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations
Environment Programme (UNEP) coordinate the SOI Global Dialogue, which was
established in 2016 to enhance cooperation on the conservation and sustainable
management of the marine and coastal environment around the globe.  This fourth
meeting of the SOI Global Dialogue will focus on accelerating and expanding
efforts for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity
Framework (KMGBF), known as The Biodiversity Plan. Dedicated sessions will also
examine how global and regional bodies can support the implementation of the
recently adopted Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the
Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of
Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ). Here are three ways in which the SOI
Global Dialogue is pushing for progress in the impleme...

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY-- 5 JUNE 2024

Land ecosystems provide invaluable services that are essential for life, such as
oxygen, food and water.  Land is also critical to our efforts to address climate
change and to protect us from its worst impacts.  And land is home to much of
the world’s biodiversity: The forests, the plains and the meadows host
an extraordinary wealth of life forms.  Soils teem with invertebrates and
microorganisms working day and night to support life and our very existence on
this planet.  But land degradation through deforestation, desertification,
pollution and waste, and climate change, are stifling land ecosystems, putting
millions of people in harm’s way.  We need to restore land and its ecosystem
functions and services.  The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework—also
known as The Biodiversity Plan—is about halting and reversing biodiversity loss
by 2030 for the benefit of people and planet. This is humanity’s roadma...

UN HLPF 2024 – "SDG SUMMIT TO THE SUMMIT OF THE FUTURE” -- 17 JULY 2024

Statement by Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary, Convention on Biological
Diversity   "Madame President, Distinguished Delegates, Biodiversity is
essential to sustainable development, providing services that we all depend on.
It helps regulate our climate, reduces impacts of natural hazards, and provides
us with nutritious and diversified food. It is the foundation of human health
and well-being. The loss of biodiversity threatens food and water security,
sustainable economic growth, and undermines our efforts to eradicate poverty.
Investing in biodiversity is, therefore, not merely an environmental concern but
an economic and social necessity.  The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity
Framework adopted at the CBD COP 15, makes a strong contribution to the
achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Its full
implementation is urgent to enable us to protect and restore nature, to prosper
with nature, to share its benefits fairly, and to i...

life on earth – to survive and thrive. The diversity within species, between
species and of ecosystems, supports nature’s contributions to people including
food, clean wate...
How the freshly selected regional centres will bolster the implementation of the
Biodiversity Plan
At the fourth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI 4) of the
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Parties selected 18 regional
organizations spanning the globe in a multilateral push to bolster the
implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known
as the Biodiversity Plan, through science, technology and innovation: Africa:
The Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), the Ecological Monitoring
Center (CSE), the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development
(RCMRD), the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS), and the South African National
Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). Americas: The Alexander von Humboldt Biological
Resources Research Institute, the Secretariat of the Caribbean Community
(CARICOM), and the Central American Commission on Environment and Development
(CCAD). Asia: ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB); IUCN Asia Regional Office;
IUCN Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA); Nanjing Institute of Env...

Astrid Schomaker | Executive Secretary, CBD Secretariat
The United Nations Secretary-General has designated Astrid Schomaker of Germany
as Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological
Diversity (CBD). Ms. Schomaker officially took up her appointment as of 1 July
2024. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Schomaker has work on a variety of issues
ranging from bilateral and multilateral relations to chemicals, oceans, and the
water industry. Most recently, as Director for Green Diplomacy and
Multilateralism with the European Commission in Brussels, she promoted a global
transition to resource efficient, low emission, nature-positive circular
economies.

PROGRAMMES

THEMATIC

The Conference of the Parties (COP) has established seven thematic programmes of
work (listed below) which correspond to some of the major biomes on the planet.
Each programme establishes a vision for, and basic principles to guide future
work. They also set out key issues for consideration, identify potential
outputs, and suggest a timetable and means for achieving these. Implementation
of the work programmes depends on contributions from Parties, the Secretariat,
relevant intergovernmental and other organizations. Periodically, the COP and
the SBSTTA review the state of implementation of the work programmes.

CROSS-CUTTING

The COP has also initiated work on key matters of relevance to all thematic
areas. These cross-cutting issues correspond to the issues addressed in the
Convention's substantive provisions in Articles 6-20, and provide bridges and
links between the thematic programmes. Some cross cutting initiatives directly
support work under thematic programmes, for example, the work on indicators
provides information on the status and trends of biodiversity for all biomes.
Others develop discrete products quite separate from the thematic programmes.
