Sign in A program to bring free groceries to middle school students in the Huffman area has been allocated nearly $300,000. On Tuesday, the Birmingham Board of Education approved plans to allocate $277,500 toward a two-year pilot program to place a grocery store in Huffman Middle School, Bhamnow.com reports. Produce and packaged goods will be available for free to students in need through the program. Birmingham City Council Member Clinton Woods proposed the idea based on a similar initiative he saw in Atlanta. Goodr opened a location in April in Forestdale, the BBJ previously reported. Goodr is a startup that promotes a free and low-cost shopping experience. Its Forestdale address is 1500 Daniel Payne Drive. Goodr provides technology and logistics to track an organization’s surplus food from pick up to donation, and partners with organizations across the country to get groceries and meals to communities in need, according to its website, among other services. Goodr Inc. was named one of Atlanta’s fastest-growing private companies early in 2024 by the Atlanta Business Chronicle. To qualify for the list, companies had to be based in metro Atlanta with 2023 revenue between $1 million and $300 million and two-year growth in sales of more than 50%. The Link Entrepreneur Center opened in 2023 next to Huffman Middle School. It provides trainings, networking and seminars, and features private office spaces and open space rental, a conference room, workspace, a podcast recording studio, a headshot studio, a livestream studio and a merchandise branding store for local entrepreneurs.
