INTRO

This is not exactly a new generation but a version that brings what we have been
wishing for for years. I’ve always felt that JBL’s large portable speakers are
held back by the Bluetooth connection, which doesn’t allow them to display all
the qualities. The new Boombox 3 Wi-Fi has changed all that because, as the
label says, it comes equipped with wireless network connectivity.

JBL’s wireless speakers provide excellent value for money, but the new version
of the Boombox takes it to an even higher level.

CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN

Externally, the Boombox 3 Wi-Fi differs from the original version only in some
very discreet details, while everything else is the same. Over the years, the
basic shape of the slightly rounded roller has proven to be very practical and
at the same time attractive. The case is mostly covered with durable fabric with
a pronounced texture, while there are plastic reinforcements on the sides, and a
massive metal carrying handle is integrated into the upper part.

The central part of the front is decorated with a large, yet discreet company
logo. Above it, there are controls in the form of function symbols, and here we
come across the buttons for switching on and wireless connection, volume
control, and playback control. There is also a new heart-shaped button, which
plays the playlist you previously saved in the accompanying application. Next to
the LED in the upper part, which shows the status of the device, at the bottom
of the front, there is an LED strip for signaling the battery charge. The
surface of the back is quite empty and there we only find a massive rubberized
cover that protects the USB-A port and the power port from water and dust.

The great similarity with the basic model continues inside the case because a
three-system topology is provided for music reproduction. Two drivers with a
diameter of 20 millimeters are responsible for the high tones, a pair of
80-millimeter units are intended for the mid-range, while the lowest range is
reproduced through one racetrack membrane measuring 189 x 114 millimeters.

Impressive amplification involves separate modules for all speaker units, which
have a total power of 180 watts when the speaker is connected to the mains,
while when the battery is powered, the power is reduced to 140 watts to increase
autonomy.

The internal battery has a capacity of 9,600 milliampere-hours and allows up to
24 hours of operation, charging an empty battery in four and a half hours, and a
power bank function for charging other devices via the USB port.

SOUND TEST

Since I was already familiar with the tonal qualities of this speaker via
Bluetooth, during the testing I was mostly concerned with the direct comparison
of the sound via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connection. As expected, the differences
are not small and can be heard from the first tones, although I admit that this
also depends on the quality of the recording, and also on the genre of music.
However, even with undemanding tracks, cleaner tones, and an overall clearer
presentation are noticeable, with a quieter and darker background.

The reproduction is quite precise in the entire scope, so the Boombox 3 Wi-Fi
consequently achieves a better stereo effect, although it needs a slightly
greater distance from the auditorium. In the interior of the not-too-wide stage,
the situation is also improved, so the instruments are presented more
expressively and with better separation while distinguishing individual
instruments within a larger group is also easier than with Bluetooth.

CHECK PRICE

The overall tonal balance is quite neutral, which is not exactly a
characteristic of JBL’s portable speakers, but it actually shows how much more
and better this speaker can do with audio files of appropriate quality. During
playback of the “Tour de France Soundtracks” album, the Boombox 3 Wi-Fi afforded
us a very good mix of precise and dry synthetic tones with a somewhat spicier
and richer rhythm section. The echo is presented quite clearly, yet
time-accurate and without compromising the basic tone, which is a feature worthy
of all praise. I’m already used to the fact that JBL can’t fail in the lower
part of the spectrum, but the Wi-Fi connection brought a new dimension to this –
in addition to the large mass and powerful impact. basses now have precisely
defined lines and vivid presentation as a result of greater detail and layering.

FINAL VERDICT

If the sound of the Boombox is not quite to your liking, it can be corrected
using a simple three-band equalizer in the JBL One application, which also
offers access to various music services, such as Tidal, Spotify, Tuneln, etc.
The device supports Chromecast, Alexa Multi-Room Music, and AirPlay, and the
advanced dual-band Wi-Fi accepts a wireless connection at 2.4 and 5 GHz.
Although it is dust and water-resistant according to the IP67 certificate, the
Boombox 3 Wi-Fi uses recycled plastic and fabric in its construction, and JBL
has offered all this at a price that is only about fifty dollars higher than the
basic model – really great!

JBL BOOMBOX 3 WI-FI PRO & CONS

PROS

 * Precise and clear sound
 * Convincing and powerful presentation
 * Good set of options
 * Rugged housing

CONS

 * A physical audio input would complete the practicality

In conclusion, the JBL Boombox 3 Wi-Fi is a standout choice for audiophiles and
party enthusiasts alike, offering a powerful and immersive audio experience in a
rugged and durable package. Its exceptional sound quality especially with Wi-Fi
connection, along with its portability and resistance to the elements, makes it
a reliable and enjoyable companion for various outdoor activities and social
gatherings.
